GeneralExplanationAttachment/GeneralExplanation/Explanation11 - The Academy of Puppetry and Allied Arts 09-353 / ACA009 Address: 1345 West 1st Street, Los Angeles, CA 90026 FYE Date: December 31 Private Nonoperating Foundation Non-qualifying Distribution Grant Date: April 16, 2009 Total Grant Amount: $50,000 Dates and Amounts of Payments: 5/8/2009 - $50,000 Purpose of Grant: Grant funds will be used to support educational programs at The Academy of Puppetry and Allied Arts, which will enable students from Title 1 schools in the Los Angeles, California area to attend performances at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, a component of the organization. The Foundation understands that The Academy will subsidize the ticket price for each school, provide transportation assistance to the schools when possible, and schedule additional performances to accommodate increased interest and participation by area teachers. The Academy's programs will reach children who would not otherwise have access to arts education, enabling them to learn about the integration of puppetry arts with language arts, music, visual arts, sculpture, and crafts. Financial Summary Revenue: Grant Payment - $50,000 Expenditures: Ticket Subsidy Program, May 2009 - $24,668.50 Ticket Subsidy Program, June 2009 - $25,331.50 Total Expenditures: $50,000 Balance: $0 Dates of Reports Received by Grantee: 3/2/2010 FY09 Update: During 2009, the organization expanded its outreach program to students in the Los Angeles area, which enabled 13,107 students and teachers to attend a performance at the Bob Baker Marionette Theater that integrates puppetry arts with language, music, art, sculpture and crafts. The $20 ticket price was offset by a $7.50 fee collected from the schools for each student, and the remaining $12.50 was covered by the Ticket Subsidy Program. Thus Annenberg Foundation funds enabled 3,565 students to attend the performance. With other funding sources, the organization prepared two sets of instructional materials for teachers, both of which met the California Department of Education Standards for Visual and Performing Arts. 2 - Aegis Trust 08-625 / AEG002 Address: The Holocaust Centre Laxton Newark, Nottinghamshire United Kingdom NG22 9ZG FYE Date: December 31 Foreign Organization Grant Date: June 27, 2008 Total Grant Amount: $500,000 Dates and Amounts of Payments: 7/31/2008 - $283,769 5/22/2009 - $216,231 Purpose of Grant: Grant funds will be used to support the general operations of the Kigali Memorial Centre (KMC) and Memorial Gardens, as well as education, documentation, and social programming of the Centre, which is the site of burial for around 250,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, and now serves as the focal point for memorialization in Rwanda. Operated by the Aegis Trust, the KMC works to rebuild democratization, unity, and reconciliation within Rwandan society through programs that acknowledge survivors; educate the younger generations about the causes of genocide; act as a reminder for the international community, and provide a facility for documentation. The Aegis Trust will support the operations of the KMC and Memorial Gardens that include a main historical exhibition, a children's memorial exhibition and an exhibition on comparative genocide, called Wasted Lives. KMC also has over four acres of memorial gardens containing ten mass graves, as well as the National Genocide Documentation Centre. Moreover, the Aegis Trust will expand KMC's education programming through the development of a mobile exhibition to include students in rural areas, and by providing teacher training to prepare educators for their visit to the exhibition, and enable them to provide emotional support to their students as they gain knowledge of the genocide by working with psychologists and counselors to monitor each student's emotional response to the subject matter. The organization will also continue its Documentation Program, which collects testimonies from survivors and perpetrators, and will create a database of the genocide

The medals convey a story with historical context, comparing the longstanding and well-known association of medals with glory and achievement, with the darker tradition of the medal as an indicator of dishonour. Twelve internationally renowned contemporary artists will be chosen to create a drawing under the broad rubric of "Medal of Dishonour." The drawings will serve as the templates for the twelve medals and will focus on important global issues such as global warming, deforestation, third world debt, over-population, consumerism, nuclear arms proliferation, war, and AIDS. The drawings and medals will be displayed in the "Medals of Dishonour" exhibit. Following the exhibition, the drawings will be donated to the British Museum for its permanent collection. The Trust expects to hold the exhibition sometime in 2008. The InnerChange Charitable Society, working with the Addiction Research Team at the University of British Columbia and the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, will develop five substitution studies that target drug-addicted individuals for whom traditional treatment has not resulted in long-term abstinence from drug use. The Project will employ a harm reduction model that includes regular interaction with health professionals to facilitate interventions that will help users develop methods to end their drug dependence. The five trials currently under development include: integration of HIV treatment and addiction treatment; Optimized Opioid Substitution; Heroin Assisted Treatment compared with Hydromorphone and intravenous versus oral administration; treatment of stimulate dependence, and treatment of crack users. A critical component of the organization's work on the Chronic Abuse Substance Treatment program was to educate the community, stakeholders, and policy makers about the effectiveness of substitution therapy for chronically addicted users. In August 2009, the New England Journal of Medicine published the results of one of the program trials, whose results indicated that through substitution treatment, crime rates were reduced, health outcomes improved, illicit heroin use dropped 70% among study participants, and the program cost was $20 per day per addict ($7,500 per year), compared with $55,000 per year per untreated addict (costs to health care and criminal justice system). The organization faced a setback when the Quebec Government canceled their funding at the Montreal site. This accelerated outreach and awareness building in Vancouver to educate the community on the benefits of substitution treatment. 34 - InnerChange Charitable Society 10-093 / INN006 Address: Ste 400-601 W.
