That committee decides the form and amount of compensation for the president and chief executive officer and senior managers using the methods listed in schedule j, part i line 3. The committee is composed of persons without a conflict with respect to its compensation decisions, except the president and chief executive officer, an ex officio member of the committee, who is recused from all decisions related to his or her compensation. The committee relies on appropriate data as to the reasonableness of compensation and documents the basis for each decision at the time the decision is made. This review is done every year.”

“FY 2024 began in July 2023 with a determination by WCS marine researchers that harbor porpoises have been documented year-round in the New York-New Jersey harbor. Later that month, a diverse group of tiger conservation organizations that includes WCS announced a coalition to support tiger range countries in realizing their long-term tiger conservation ambitions. August saw the protection of two important landscapes in Asia. In Papua New Guinea, WCS worked with Indigenous landowners of the Inaugl tribe and neighbors in the Bismarck Forest Corridor to put 46.3 square miles of forest under a conservation deed. In Cambodia, WCS worked with the government to designate the Bakan grassland as a national protected area. New evidence of rare underwater coral refuges provided more hope for reefs according to a WCS-partnered Conservation Biology study published in September. That same month, WCS joined a coalition of 27 global conservation organizations to become a founding member of the Nature-Positive Initiativethe WCS-managed Nouabale-Ndoki became the first certified Gorilla-Friendly National Park. In October, WCS researchers joined partners at the University of Queensland and CoralVita to develop a new app to map ocean water pollution in real time. In another advance in conservation technology, WCS joined Earth Ranger and other partners to launched a first-of-its-kind universal adaptor called Gundi enabling compatibility between diverse conservation technologies. In November, the Executive Secretariat of the Central African Forest Commission and WCS signed a Memorandum of Understanding on protection of 30% of land and sea by the year 2030. WCS likewise worked with government and Indigenous partners in Papua New Guinea to create two new marine protected areas, tripling the amount of ocean under protection in PNG's territorial waters. December saw the launch of a new effort to rescue the Moskitia Forest by the government of Honduras. Coming at COP28 of the Convention on Biological Diversity in Dubai, WCS hailed the action in support of its Five Great Forests initiative. That same month WCS Bolivia signed a milestone agreement to facilitate fund led by Indigenous groups to support their territorial management efforts. In January, WCS celebrated the 30th anniversary of the creation of Nouabale-Ndoki National Park, an extraordinary stronghold for biodiversity that also became the first Key Biodiversity Area created using ecological integrity criteria. WCS likewise announced its work to analyze highly productive marine areas for the protection at least 30 percent of the planet by 2030. In February, representatives of WCS global conservation and U.S. Policy leadership met with the Government of Mozambique to advance the Miombo Forest Initiative. That same month, WCS announced that on-the-ground data gathering, NASA satellite imagery, and Google Earth Engine computing power are helping scientists develop real-time monitoring of tiger habitat globally. In March, the US Foundation for International Conservation Act, or USFICA, was advanced to the floor of the House of Representatives on its way to passage by both Houses later in December. This critically important bipartisan bill, signed into law, creates a public-private partnership to secure protected areas globally. In April, WCS announced that tropical forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council in Gabon and the Congo Republic harbor a higher abundance of larger mammals and Critically Endangered species than non-FSC forests. In New York, WCS joined Indigenous Rights groups to support youth voices at the 23rd Session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. May saw a big push by the WCS Health and International Policy Programs to help guide the World Health Organization (WHO) in its debate over a global pandemic agreement. WCS urged the WHO to include language on zoonotic spillover prevention, coordinated multisectoral surveillance, and addressing drivers of pandemics at the”
“The year of 2024 marked the 125th anniversary of the Bronx Zoo. The iconic New York institution first opened its doors in 1899 on Nov. 8. Over more than a century, the Bronx Zoo has become a cultural and education leader, a conservation giant, and a gateway to nature, for millions of visitors. On the conservation front, the Bronx Zoo led the launch in October 2023 an effort with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and its member facilities to advance the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which includes protecting at least 30 percent of the planet by 2030 (30x30). The Bronx Zoo joined AZA to unite the entire zoo and aquarium community behind making 30x30 a reality, along with the other agreed-upon targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. There was also a focus on Prospect Park Zoo in 2024 as it reopened on May 25 after being closed for 239 days due to flooding from Tropical Storm Ophelia in 2023. During the storm and temporary closure, none of the more than 400 animals were affected. While the zoo was closed to the public, staff continued to take care of the animals and facility. WCS staff from the Bronx Zoo, Queens Zoo, Central Park Zoo and New York Aquarium assisted the Prospect Park Zoo team throughout the recovery. Bronx Zoo Celebrates 125 Years The Bronx Zoo has welcomed millions of visitors since opening in 1899. On an annual basis, it welcomes over half a million children and employs more than 750 youth. As the largest employer of youth in the Bronx, thousands of Bronxites have launched their lifelong careers at the zoo. The Bronx Zoo celebrated its 125th year throughout 2024, including hosting city, state and Bronx Borough officials at an event on April 18. The celebration included Animal Chronicles; a temporary exhibit with a walking trail of more than a quarter mile featuring life-size and gigantic, immersive eco-sculptures that showcased key achievements in the Bronx Zoo's history of saving animal species and connecting New Yorkers to wildlife. WCS hosted its annual gala on June 12 celebrating the Bronx Zoo's 125th anniversary and paying tribute to its director, Jim Breheny. Breheny, began serving as Director of the Bronx Zoo in 2005; and has served in that position and as Executive Vice President of WCS's Zoos and Aquarium since 2011. A Bronx native, he started working at the Bronx Zoo as a summer intern. During 2024, the Bronx Zoo also celebrated the 25th anniversary of its award-winning Congo Gorilla Forest. Since its opening in June 1999, more than 15 million people have visited the exhibit, learning about the urgency of conservation and leaving inspired to save wildlife and the places where they live. Zoos & Aquarium Animal Programs Two snow leopard cubs debuted at the Bronx Zoo in November 2023. The Bronx Zoo has had more snow leopard births-at 80-than any other zoo in North America and was the first zoo in the United States to exhibit the big cats in 1903. The Bronx Zoo announced the hatching of Mangshan pit viper in November, 2023. Among the world's rarest snake species, the venomous, vividly colored Mangshan pit viper was only discovered in 1990 and is believed to exist in the wild solely within a 115-square-mile (300-square-kilometer) area of densely forested mountains in southeast China, specifically in the Hunan and Guangdong provinces. The Bronx Zoo announced in January 2024 three newly acquired Sunda gharial in the World of Reptiles. The three male siblings, about five years old, that were hatched at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, are being raised at the Bronx Zoo to support the propagation efforts of the AZA Sunda Gharial Species Survival Plan (SSP). The New York Aquarium sponsored a beach clean-up in June 2024 for World Oceans Day. Three 5-month-old Andean bear cubs debuted in June at the Queens Zoo, marking a rare occurrence as Andean bears typically only have one or two cubs at a time. The cubs were born in January 2024, including two males and o”
