Mission

Hartley house has served those who live and work in new york city's hell's kitchen since 1897. Its mission is to respond energetically and creatively to the ever-evolving needs of its neighbors regardless of their age, income, race, gender or sexual orientation. Our programs include educational, creative, recreational, civic and social services. Hartley house not only reaches out to neighbors of all backgrounds and ages, but also fosters ongoing connections with them as they pass from one phase of life into another. The wellbeing of each growing, changing person enriches our entire community. Every neighborhood is a complex web of connections among families, friends, neighbors, businesses and organizations. Strengthening these connections is our mission.

Major Activities

Activity 2
SOCIAL WORK SERVICESHOPE (Home Outreach Program for Elders) has been serving the Hells Kitchen community for 13 years, providing comprehensive case management and financial assistance for older adults. Traditionally serving clients 60 years and older, we have made a few exceptions for those in their late 50s due to extraordinary need. HOPE now offers three dedicated social workers who work with individuals to help identify their needs and meet their full potential in order to help stabilize them in the community. HOPE supervised two undergraduate students and one graduate student in 2012.Hartley House is accredited by the Social Security Administration (SSA) as an Organizational Representative Payee for HOPE clients, the basis of its Formal Money Management (FMM) component. HOPE has enrolled a total of 12 clients, with an additional two pending, as full representative payees since the inception of FMM. In 2012, HOPE managed nine clients as full representative payees. These clients have now significantly reduced their incidence of elder financial abuse, reduced their debt, prevented their monthly bills from ending up in arrears, and prevented possible evictiondelaying early institutionalization. In addition, 26 clients received informal money management services from assistance with bill payment to budgeting. These skills, along with the other services provided by our social workers, enable the seniors to remain in their homes longer as viable members of the community. By collaborating with other agencies, 15 of these clients received stipendiary assistance to help meet basic monthly needs. In general, 65%-75% of our clients receive money management services as representative payees, informally from HOPE or in collaboration with other agencies. HOPE served a total of 73 clients throughout 2012 with an average of 67 active clients at any given time. It obtained emergency grants for 28 clientsused for utilities, rental arrears, heavy duty cleaning, emergency home care, etc. Our Social Workers helped our clients work through difficult issues this year from the mandatory enrollment into a Managed Long Term Care (MLTC) plan to eviction lawsuits brought by landlords.
Activity 3
COMMUNITY EDUCATIONAdult Education - Through a combination of collaborative partnerships, the Adult Education services at Hartley House include three programs: the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) preparation program, El Centro de Educacin de Trabajadores, and ESL classes. These programs help adults realize their goals of improving their education, learning English or Spanish, developing computer skills, help new immigrants understand their rights or becoming a US citizen. The Adult General Equivalency Diploma (GED) preparation classes are led by two volunteers and they meet twice a week. As many as 15 students receive free instruction in subjects such as Math, Social Studies, English, and Science to help them earn their equivalency diplomas.El Centro de Educacin de Trabajadores (El Centro) is an independent organization partnering with and conducting its operations at Hartley House. El Centro provides assistance to recent immigrants to New York City. Evening classes are offered in English, Basic Computer skills, and preparation for the INS citizenship exam. With the addition of Spanish and Mandarin language classes, El Centro fosters a friendly community environment that promotes cross-cultural understanding and support. Workshops are offered on topics such as housing rights, access to health care, tax and immigration issues, and low-cost banking options. 2012 Enrollment was approximately 375 participants over three semesters (spring, summer and fall).Hartley House offers free space to the NYC Department of Education to host four daily English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for 75-100 adults between 9:00am 4:15pm. These programs support Hartley Houses educational mission to address inequities and foster self-sufficiency by helping individuals thrive and become empowered members of the community.Creative Arts A versatile and attentive Creative Arts Program is an essential part of Hartley Houses various programs and provides an integral service to the larger community. Its goal is to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages by providing them with access to private individual art therapy sessions and/or group open studio workshops. We believe that art making is beneficial for everyone. In 2012, a total of 270 children, adults and seniors participated in our various offerings.Offering private art therapy sessions to our After School children and HOPE seniors, Creative Arts focused on the creative process of art making rather than learning art techniques. The process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and self-awareness, and achieve insight. With the help of their mentors, 7 seniors and 19 youth strengthened their identities as artists and developed their visual communication/storytelling skills while dealing with their personal experiences and giving form to the many thoughts and feelings that they may not have had the words to express. Additionally 192 youth attended Learning Community art workshops during After School and/or Summer Camp, expanding their visual and kinesthetic learning skills through traditional art, crafts, digital art, costume design, prop design, and ceramics group classes. For the larger community, open studio workshops were made available. They provided a safe and supportive environment, allowing group members to experiment without the fear of failure. 19 adults and 34 seniors learned or refined their skills with ceramics and oil painting. 18 families came together to make art as parent and child groups working collaboratively on join projects. In collaboration with Covenant House, our Young Mothers Group for homeless teen moms utilized informal conversation and open-ended art directives to enhance their appreciation of the culture of Hartley House and one another through the shared art making process; 38 young mothers we

IRS990/Description0CHILDREN & YOUTH SERVICESAfter School Program - From September through June, after every school day, 60 children ages 5 to 12 are escorted to Hartley House to participate in the After School Program (ASP) until 6 PM. The children enjoy a nutritious snack and a healthy balance of play, academics, and creative projects. In addition to receiving daily homework assistance, students engage in a broad range of age-appropriate activities such as Idea Labs, computers, drama, music, ceramics, theatre production and rehearsal, art, and gym. The ASP provides the children of working parents with a safe and warm environment where they are encouraged to develop their social-emotional, academic and creative skills through a project-based Learning Community (LC) design. Students participated in three LC groups in 2012: Jan-Mar, Apr-June & Sept-Dec. Each LC group had Idea Lab, gym, one visual art session (ceramics or arts & crafts) and one performing arts session (drama and music) per week. Idea Labs utilize a Multimodal approach, Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic sensory modalities VARK - Fleming and Mills (1992) while also considering Howard Gardners theory of Multiple Intelligences. Idea Lab lessons are planned by the counselors for each group with supervision from the Program Director and incorporate readings, writing exercises, literacy games, and creative play to engage the participants in learning about and creating a final project for their topic. LCs are an essential element of our program model because participants choose their topics of study and the interests of the children in each group drive the curriculum and lesson planning. In 2012, our curriculum evolved from lesson plans for only one activity created by the same person for all groups, to a collaborative curriculum designed by all facilitating staff members, guided by the choices of our participants. The LC projects in 2012 also evolved, some into full-scale theatrical productions with live music, stage lighting, costumes, make up, and scripts written by our participants, others into videos filmed with and by the children. Our groups chose to learn about many diverse topics including savannas, ocean life, India, the 50 states, cultural identity, the ASPCA, farmers markets, and even a musical revue about spring. The ASP averaged 52 students at a time in 2012 (our license max is 60), but with the addition of children who only participated for a portion of the year, we served 94 children throughout 2012. Children also benefited from individual art therapy sessions with an art therapist and we averaged 12 children in the program at any given time. For the 2012-2013 school year, two participants received full scholarships and nine participants received partial scholarships toward their After School tuition. Pied Piper Summer Day Camp - The Pied Piper Summer Day Camp provides recreational, social, and educational enrichment for children ages 4 to 12. Our program also engages campers who have aged out of the program, and are at least 13, as volunteer GRADS (Growing Responsibly And Delivering Services), and many of our staff members in 2012 were returning campers/staff. The camp runs for eight weeks in July and August and serves up to 125 children at any one time, as per our license. Total served over the course of the summer is 175. It utilizes a balance of educational and recreational activities that consistently challenge children's minds and bodies. This unique method of learn and play successfully fills the gap between the end and start of the school year. In 2012, we saw record setting registration (175 children) and an average weekly attendance of 90 campers, mostly due to loyal parents and word-of-mouth. We received scholarship donations from an anonymous donor, Greg Rasin and Elise Bloom, Federation of Protestant Welfare Agencies, and the DJ Dream Fund. With these generous donations we awarded three full scholarships to campers and nine partial (50%) scholarships.

IRS990/MissionDescription0Hartley House has served those who live and work in New York City's Hell's Kitchen since 1897. Its mission is to respond energetically and creatively to the ever-evolving needs of its neighbors regardless of their age, income, race, gender or sexual orientation. Our programs include educational, creative, recreational, civic and social services. Our size enables us to be both flexible and personalized, and we are always alert to ways in which our programs and services can support or complement one another. Hartley House not only reaches out to neighbors of all backgrounds and ages, but also fosters ongoing connections with them as they pass from one phase of life into another. The well being of each growing, changing person enriches our entire community. Every neighborhood is a complex web of connections among families, friends, neighbors, businesses and organizations. Strengthening these connections is our mission.
