Financial Statement Notes

Part IV, Line 2B: Explanation of escrow account liability

Hartley House is accredited by the Social Security Administration (SSA) as an Organizational Representative Payee for HOPE clients, the basis of its Formal Money Management (FMM) component. In 2013, HOPE managed 11 clients as full representative payees. These clients have now significantly reduced their incidence of elder financial abuse, reduced their debt, prevented their monthly bills from ending up in arrears, and prevented possible eviction delaying early institutionalization.

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

The policy is to accumulate interest, dividends, and other market gains for future appropriation, in order to meet near term programmatic needs as well as longer term strategic goals. Annual appropriations to support operations are budgeted. Additional appropriations are approved by the board of directors as deemed prudent and distributed for operating purposes.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

Hartley does not believe its financial statements include any material uncertain tax positions. Tax filings for periods ending December 31, 2010 and later are subject to examination by applicable taxing authorities.

IRS990/Desc0CHILDREN & YOUTH SERVICESAfter School Program - From September through June, after every school day, children ages 5 to 12 are escorted to Hartley House to participate in the After School Program (ASP) until 6 PM. As of 6/27/2013, our School Age Child Care license was expanded and we enrolled 70 children in the 2013-2014 school year. (With increased funding, we could enroll up to 194 children.) The children enjoy a nutritious snack and a healthy balance of play, academics, and creative projects. In addition to receiving daily homework assistance, students engage in a broad range of age-appropriate activities such as Idea Labs, computers, drama, music, ceramics, theatre production and rehearsal, art and gym. The ASP provides the children of working parents with a safe and warm environment where they are encouraged to develop their social-emotional, academic and creative skills through a project-based Learning Community (LC) design. Students participated in three LC groups in 2013: Jan-Mar, Apr-June & Sept-Dec. Each LC group had Idea Lab, gym, one visual art session (ceramics or arts & crafts) and one performing arts session (drama and music) per week. Idea Labs utilize a Multimodal approach, Visual, Aural, Read/write, and Kinesthetic sensory modalities VARK - Fleming and Mills (1992) while also considering Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences. Idea Lab lessons are planned by the counselors for each group with supervision from the Program Director and incorporate readings, writing exercises, literacy games, and creative play to engage the participants in learning about and creating a final project for their topic. LCs are an essential element of our program model because participants choose their topics of study and the interests of the children in each group drive the curriculum and lesson planning. The LC projects in 2013 continued to expand on our participants curiosity and interest in the performing arts, some into full-scale theatrical productions with live sound effects, stage lighting, costumes, make up, and scripts written by our participants, others into videos filmed with and by the children. Our groups chose to learn about many diverse topics including the history of Hartley House, Dr. Seuss, how to create a television show, documentary-style filmmaking, the Pete the Cat books, and how glow sticks work. Their performances were inspiring and challenged them to not only learn more about the groups topic, but also the art of stagecraft and filmmaking. The ASP enrolled 56 students from January-June 2013 (our license max was 60), but because of vacation days, we served an additional 31 children, or 87 total for the first half of the year. From September-December 2013 the ASP enrolled 70 children; accounting for returning participants and vacation day only children. In total, we served 147 children during 2013 in the ASP. 17 children also benefited from individual art mentoring sessions with an art therapist. One participant received a full scholarship and eleven participants received partial scholarships for their After School tuition. In 2013 we also had many volunteers assist in various capacities with our ASP. Impact 4 Good, an organization that matches corporate donors with charitable organizations, brought members of the Dentsply team to Hartley House to build bikes and then donate them to ten of our participants! BNP Paribas brought members of its team to help paint our gym locker rooms. Employees from Ogilvy helped create backdrops for our program and signs for our carnivals, then came again in the fall to play Bingo with the kids, decorate sugar cookies and make crafts. Moody's also helped our program this year by building stage pieces that we were able to use during several theatrical performances, and members of the Rubicon team helped us decorate and serve food at our Spread the Love Dinner. In addition, Explainer Music conducted a workshop on stop-motion animation and filmed a music video with our

IRS990/MissionDesc0Hartley House has served those who live and work in New York City's Hell's Kitchen since 1897. Its mission is to respond energetically and creatively to the ever-evolving needs of its neighbors regardless of their age, income, race, gender or sexual orientation. Our programs include educational, creative, recreational, civic and social services. Our size enables us to be both flexible and personalized, and we are always alert to ways in which our programs and services can support or complement one another. Hartley House not only reaches out to neighbors of all backgrounds and ages, but also fosters ongoing connections with them as they pass from one phase of life into another. The well being of each growing, changing person enriches our entire community. Every neighborhood is a complex web of connections among families, friends, neighbors, businesses and organizations. Strengthening these connections is our mission.
