| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | BENIN:IN 2018, PFD TRAINED OVER 3,800 PINEAPPLE FARMERS ON BEST FARMING PRACTICES AS WELL AS BUSINESS AND MARKETING SKILLS. THIS RESULTED IN THE PRODUCTION OF 234,000 MT OF HIGH-QUALITY PINEAPPLE, REPRESENTING AN 89% INCREASE. THE PINEAPPLE WAS SOLD TO REGIONAL FRESH FRUIT MARKETS (82 MT), JUICE AND DRIED FRUIT PROCESSING COMPANIES (105 MT), AND EXPORTERS (24MT) WHO SHIPPED THE FRESH FRUIT TO EUROPE.TO INCREASE SALES OF FRESH AND PROCESSED PINEAPPLE IN INTERNATIONAL MARKETS, PFD TRAINED 60 PINEAPPLE PROCESSING COMPANIES AND 13 EXPORTERS ON BEST PRACTICES, MODERN BRANDING AND MARKETING, AND PROVIDED GUIDANCE ON HOW TO GAIN INTERNATIONAL FOOD SAFETY CERTIFICATIONS. PFD ALSO CONNECTED 12 PROCESSOR COMPANIES TO NEW MARKETS THROUGH ORGANIZING EXPORT MARKET TOURS WITHIN WEST AFRICA, INCLUDING TOGO, GHANA, BURKINA FASO, NIGER, AND SENEGAL. ADDITIONALLY, PFD FACILITATED PARTICIPATION IN FRUIT LOGISTICA, ONE OF EUROPE'S LARGEST FRESH FRUIT TRADE FAIRS WHICH IS HELD EACH FEBRUARY IN BERLIN. THE RESULTING NEW MONTHLY EXPORT SALES OF PINEAPPLE PRODUCTS INCLUDE 872 MT OF SUGARLOAF PINEAPPLE JUICE AND 1,920 KG OF DRIED PINEAPPLE TO REGIONAL AND EUROPEAN MARKETS. MONTHLY SALES OF 470 MT OF FRESH SUGARLOAF AND SMOOT CAYENNE PINEAPPLE ARE BEING EXPORTED TO FRANCE AND BELGIUM.PFD'S SUSTAINABLE MODEL OF MARKET ORIENTED AGRICULTURAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT IS BUILDING THE CAPACITIES OF PRIVATE SECTOR COMPANIES, INSTITUTIONS, AND GOVERNMENT TO MEET AFRICAN AND EUROPEAN MARKET DEMAND FOR FRESH PINEAPPLE AND PROCESSED FRUIT PRODUCTS. TO ENSURE THAT BEST PRACTICES TRAINING CONTINUED, DURING 2018 PFD TRAINED THE TECHNICAL STAFF OF THE LARGEST PINEAPPLE PRODUCERS ASSOCIATION, PPNB. TO CONDUCT THE TRAINING, PFD PARTNERED WITH 20 MASTER FARMERS WHO ARE THE MOST EXPERIENCED PINEAPPLE PRODUCERS. THEY WERE WILLING TO SHARE THEIR EXPERTISE TO TRAIN OTHER PRODUCERS AT THE 14 DEMONSTRATION PLOTS KNOWN AS FARMER FIELD SCHOOLS. PFD IS ALSO TRAINING THE MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE TECHNICAL AGENTS WHO OVERSEE PINEAPPLE PRODUCTION. ALTHOUGH PFD PROVIDES MANAGEMENT AND FINANCIAL TRAINING, THE CREDIT TO ENABLE PRODUCERS TO PROCURE INPUTS SUCH AS FERTILIZER AND SEEDLINGS IS MADE DIRECTLY BETWEEN THE MICROFINANCE INSTITUTIONS AND THE FARMER, ESTABLISHING A LONG-TERM REVOLVING CREDIT SYSTEM. TO ENSURE SUSTAINABILITY OF FRESH PINEAPPLE AND PROCESSED PRODUCTS, PFD HELPS EXPORTERS AND PROCESSORS TO DRAFT CONTRACTS WITH RETAIL AND WHOLESALE BUYERS IN REGIONAL AND EUROPEAN MARKETS. |
