FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Founded in 1999, new ecology, inc. (nei) is an innovative, mission-driven non-profit. We are nationally-known for our community-focused work advancing sustainable practices, reducing fossil fuel use, creating clean energy, eliminating pollution and waste, promoting resiliency and ensuring healthy environments in which to live and work. Our success is tied to the approach we have developed over the years.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

Greening the construction of affordable housing nei engages and supports community development corporations (cdc), community-based organizations and other developers of affordable housing in environmentally sound green development. Under this program nei is setting the standard for healthy, durable, resilient, energy and water efficient affordable housing, providing direct services and education and training to owners, developers, architects, contractors and financers of this housing to implement features and construction practices that directly benefit the low income residents of this housing, reduce operating costs, improve health outcomes and mitigate risk in operations. Nei trains residents to understand and take advantage of the benefits of green housing, and disseminates the lessons learned to others in the field. Greening existing affordable housing and community buildings nei works to assist owners and operators in understanding how their affordable housing and community buildings are performing and making changes to reduce energy and water use, improve health outcomes for residents, and make buildings more durable and less costly to operate. Nei organizes and trains owners and operators in best and emerging practices, provides direct services in energy auditing, efficient design, and project management, helps to arrange financing for projects and financing programs that benefit many projects, and measure and verifies the results of its efforts. Nei trains owners and operating staff to manage their operations in more environmentally and socially sound ways. Nei analyzes the results of its efforts and disseminate these findings across the country. In 2013 nei received a grant from jpb foundation, to set up exploratory meetings with other companies similar to nei for future collaboration. In 2013, nei and one of those companies, elevate energy, were awarded a two- year 6m grant from jpb to set up a national delivery network of energy efficiency implementers that provide energy efficiency services to the affordable multifamily market. In the fall of 2015, another two-year 6m grant was awarded to new ecology and elevate to continue the work that was started in previous years and to further assist in the development of the national network. In the fall of 2017, a three-year 2.1m grant was awarded directly to nei and elevate energy was awarded a second grant under which they have sub-granted nei 3,450,000 over three years. Both of these grants were awarded to be used to support national approach to scaling efficiency in affordable housing. Additionally, in november 2019 the jpb foundation granted a one-time additional grant of 250,000 to be used for general operating expenses. In the fall of 2020 a three-year 2.7m grant was awarded directly to nei, and elevate energy was awarded a second grant under which they have subgranted nei 4,650,000 over three years. Both of these grants were awarded to be used to support national approach to scaling efficiency in affordable housing. Monitoring & optimization: in august 2016 nei received a 600,000 grant from the massachusetts clean energy technology center to deploy non-proprietary hvac remote monitoring and optimization technology in 100 representative, low-income multifamily buildings to identify and correct operational inefficiencies and reduce energy costs. In august 2018 nei received an extension for an additional 200,000 for repair, replacement, and further optimization of the original 100 sites and machine learning. In the spring of 2019, nei was awarded a grant from the department of energy (doe), building for america, that is to be used to develop tools to automate the optimization analyses and fault detection process of nei's remote monitoring system via machine learning. During the negotiation period it was requested that ma cec allow the balance of their 2018 grant be used as a cost share for the department of energy grant and macec agreed.
