“The form 990 was prepared by the outside accounting firm and reviewed by senior management officials. A copy was sent to each board member before filing with the irs.”
“Pursuant to the written conflict of interest policy, employees are expected to use good judgement to adhere to high ethical standards and to avoid situations that create an actual or potential conflict of interest between the employee's personal interests and the interests of equal access. Employees unsure as to whether a certain transaction, activity, or relationship constitutes a conflict of interest discuss it with their supervisor or the ceo for clarification. Any exceptions to this guideline, including failure to disclose any conflicts or to seek an exception, will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. The board is required to annually disclose any conflicts of interest. If a conflict of interest were to occur, the member would recuse himself/herself from discussing and voting on the matter.”
“The process for determining the president/ceo's salary included a review and approval by the independent board members who used comparable salary data. The board member's decision was documented in the minutes and personnel files. The last review was conducted in december 2019. The president/ceo, along with a board member, determined the salaries for the other officers using comparable salary data and contemporaneously documented their decisions in the personnel files.”
“The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.”
“Ronni goldfarb, founder of eai, served as president & ceo through january 25, 2018. As of january 26, 2018, she became a senior advisor consultant to eai, while remaining a board director. Part vii, section a reports her total 2019 compensation, both as an employee of and a contractor to eai.”
“In 2019, eai continued technical assistance to the cs: map intermediary service organizations (isos), and oversaw iso support for cars and dcs in generating evidence for the cso-led local advocacy efforts. In addition, eai continued mentoring support to 55 journalists selected from the participants of advocacy, monitoring and oversight (amo) and investigative journalism (ij) trainings. As a result of continual eai efforts, the meroreport platform is increasingly used by cs: map stakeholders for sharing and learning about civil society and media oversight of public resource use and public service delivery. Finally, two hundred and eighty-six sajha boli episodes (26 central and 260 local production) were produced, as well as twelve episodes of saathi sanga maanka kura (ssmk) radio programs. The cve messaging hub project in the philippines (june 2018 - march 2020) furthers the global engagement center's (gec) objectives by supporting and enhancing the capabilities of local partners, individuals, and institutions with the goal that indigenous capacities to counter isis and other veos' ideologies and recruitment efforts are significantly enhanced. Highlights from 2018 have been primarily operational as the project was in its startup phase. During this period, this project held three tech camps with over 60 youth and launched peace promotion fellowships for 11 youth leaders in mindanao. Eai also produced radio episodes, social media campaigns, and released its formative research on p/cve in mindanao. Pakistan - funded by the bureau of democracy, human rights, and labor (drl) and launched in later 2018, the "faith-based women's rights initiative in pakistan" continued to implement successfully through 2019. This included weekly radio programming and the establishment of 20 listening, diacussion and action groups which engaged 365 minority women in monthly sessions on their rights to religious freedom and equality, focused on promoting freedom of religion, specifically for minority women. Kenya - somali voices (september 2018 - february 2020) contributes to the global engagement center's (gec) objectives by increasing the resilience of somali-speaking communities in kenya to violent extremism, with an emphasis on increasing local capacity to counter al-shabaab's ideologies and recruitment efforts, and shifting attitudes related to ideologically-motivated violence. During the latter end of 2018, key impacts were accomplished including: (1) the initiation and execution of formative research in wajir, garissa and nairobi; (2) mapping of prevention and counter violent extremism (p/cve) and media actors in kenya and a database generated; and (3) meeting with other p/cve and media actors in kenya. During this period, the somali voices project in kenya continued to engage with at-risk youth through its youth mentorship and fellowship components, including building the capacity of 20 peace fellows and 7 community reporters to build collaborative online and offline engagement with key resilience actors and stakeholders and assert their voices against their peers joining veos. 17 episodes of the talodoon radio program were also produced, with weekly engagement over 200 thousand young people via the accompanying talodoon facebook page.”

“During 2019, eai adopted asu 2018-08, not-for-profit entities (topic 958), clarifying the scope and accounting guidance for contributions received and contributions made. Eai adopted the asu on a retrospective basis. Accordingly, eai determined that previously recognized receivables and the related net assets with donor restrictions required adjustment (as they are all deemed to be conditional awards) and, accordingly, the previously stated receivables balance and the net assets with donor restrictions balance were retroactively restated as of 12/31/2018. -3,643,141.”
“For the year ended december 31, 2019, eai has documented its consideration of fasb asc 740-10, income taxes, that provides guidance for reporting uncertainty in income taxes and has determined that no material uncertain tax positions qualify for either recognition or disclosure in the consolidated financial statements.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | SAHEL: 2019 WAS EAI'S THIRD YEAR SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTING VOICES FOR PEACE (V4P), AN AMBITIOUS USAID-FUNDED PROJECT THAT SPANS FIVE COUNTRIES (BURKINA FASO, CAMEROON, CHAD, MALI, AND NIGER) IN THE REGION. WE CONTINUE TO USE LOCAL-LANGUAGE RADIO PROGRAMMING TO INCREASE COMMUNITY COHESION AND PREVENT THE SPREAD OF VIOLENT EXTREMISM. BY PARTNERING WITH RESPECTED LEADERS, INSTITUTIONS, AND NETWORKS, WE ADDRESS THE DRIVERS AND ROOT CAUSES OF VIOLENT EXTREMISM SUCH AS MARGINALIZATION, EXCLUSION, AND POOR GOVERNANCE. TO DATE, WE HAVE PRODUCED AND DISSEMINATED RADIO PROGRAMMING IN 14 LANGUAGES AND BROADCAST OVER 2,000 HOURS OF CVE AND BEHAVIOR CHANGE CONTENT THROUGH A VARIETY OF FORMATS, INCLUDING ROUND TABLES, VARIETY MAGAZINE SHOWS, SOAP OPERAS, AND CALL-IN SHOWS. IN THE YEARS TO COME, WE WILL CONTINUE TO AMPLIFY MODERATE VOICES OF PEACE AND INCREASE SOCIAL COHESION AND SOLIDARITY. IN 2019, THE FIVE COUNTRIES' PROGRAMMING REACHED THE FOLLOWING NUMBER OF LISTENERS IN ITS TARGET ZONES: NIGER: 1.3 MILLION (73% OF LISTENERS); BURKINA FASO: 643,000 (61% OF LISTENERS); CHAD: 516,000 (66% OF LISTENERS). THE PARTICIPATORY RESPONSIVE GOVERNANCE (PRG) - PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY (PA) IS IMPLEMENTED BY COUNTERPART INTERNATIONAL, INC. (CPI). UNDER THIS ACTIVITY, CPI HAS AWARDED EAI A THREE-YEAR (2016-2019) GRANT TO CARRY OUT CIVIC EDUCATION ACTIVITIES AND FACILITATE PUBLIC DIALOGUES THAT ARE RESPONSIVE TO PUBLIC PRIORITIES IN NIGER. IN 2019, EAI HAS WORKED LOCAL BROADCASTERS, PRINT, AND SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS IN FOUR DIFFERENT LANGUAGES (HAUSA, TAMASHEQ, ZARMA, KANURI) IN KEY GEOGRAPHIC AREAS TO CREATE SCALABLE PLATFORMS THAT MOBILIZE CITIZENS TO ENGAGE WITH RELEVANT ISSUES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND ADDRESS THEM BY ORGANIZING LOCAL ACTIVITIES AND POSITIVE SOCIAL ACTIONS. BY FACILITATING PUBLIC DIALOGUES BETWEEN CIVIL SOCIETY, GOVERNMENT, AND COMMUNITY LEADERS, AND DISSEMINATING VITAL INFORMATION TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES, EAI IS CAPACITATING KEY ACTORS, SPARKING DEBATE, AND INSPIRING CITIZENS TO COLLECTIVE ACTION. IN JANUARY 2019, EAI STARTED IMPLEMENTATION OF A THREE-YEAR PROJECT, AMPLIFYING ALTERNATIVE NARRATIVES TO PREVENT VIOLENT EXTREMISM IN CHAD, DESIGNED TO PREVENT THE SPREAD AND INFLUENCE OF VIOLENT EXTREMISM AND AMPLIFY ALTERNATIVE NARRATIVES AND LOCAL VOICES IN CHAD.WHILE WELL ESTABLISHED IN THE LAKE CHAD REGION, EAI HAD NOT PREVIOUSLY WORKED IN SOUTHERN CHAD. THE PROJECT WORKED WITH CURRENT V4P STAFF AND PARTNERS TO IDENTIFY UNIQUE WAYS TO STRENGTHEN AND EXPAND EXISTING ACTIVITIES UNDER THE USAID-FUNDED VOICES FOR PEACE PROJECT THROUGH THIS PROJECT. ON JANUARY 24-30, 2019 EAI LED A MISSION IN SOUTHERN CHAD, PARTICULARLY IN THE MOYEN-CHARI AND LOGONE OCCIDENTAL REGIONS TO CONDUCT FORMATIVE RESEARCH AND IDENTIFY KEY ACTORS AND LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO BE INVOLVED IN THE PROJECT'S FUTURE ACTIVITIES. THE MISSION ALSO IDENTIFIED PRINCIPLE SOURCES OF CONFLICT, INCLUDING FARMER-PASTORALIST CONFLICTS THAT HAVE PROLIFERATED THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH IN RECENT YEARS, AND THE PERCEIVED PARTIALITY OF AUTHORITIES IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION, LOCALIZED ATTEMPTS AT CONFLICT RESOLUTION, AND THE IMPACT OF THE CRISIS IN CENTRAL AFRICAN REPUBLIC. LASTLY, THE MISSION IDENTIFIED PARTNER RADIO STATIONS THAT WILL HELP BROADCAST PROGRAM SCALING FOR SOCIAL COHESION AND ACCOUNTABILITY. AS A RESULT OF THIS AND SUBSEQUENT TRIPS TO SOUTHERN CHAD, EAI PRODUCED A FORMATIVE RESEARCH REPORT, WHICH WAS SHARED WITH THE DONOR IN APRIL 2019. THIS REPORTS LAYS OUT THE EVOLVING CONFLICT DYNAMICS, THE MEDIA LANDSCAPE, AND FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WILL INFORM THE DESIGN OF NEW EAI ACTIVITIES IN SOUTHERN CHAD.IN JUNE 2019 AND IN SUPPORT OF OBJECTIVE 3 (EXPAND ACCESS TO INFORMATION BY LAUNCHING AN FM RADIO STATION AND RELATED PVE AND SOCIAL COHESION ACTIVITIES), EAI (THROUGH JOINT USAID/V4P AND SWISS FUNDING) FINALIZED A CONTRACT TO BUILD A NEW RADIO STATION AND TOWER IN THE TOWN OF BAGA SOLA ON THE SHORES OF LAKE CHAD.
