Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11B

The form 990 was prepared by the outside accounting firm and reviewed by senior management officials. A copy was sent to each board member before filing with the irs.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Pursuant to the written conflict of interest policy, employees are expected to use good judgement to adhere to high ethical standards and to avoid situations that create an actual or potential conflict of interest between the employee's personal interests and the interests of equal access. Employees unsure as to whether a certain transaction, activity, or relationship constitutes a conflict of interest discuss it with their supervisor or the ceo for clarification. Any exceptions to this guideline, including failure to disclose any conflicts or to seek an exception, will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. The board is required to annually disclose any conflicts of interest. If a conflict of interest were to occur, the member would recuse himself/herself from discussing and voting on the matter.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The process for determining the president/ceo's salary included a review and approval by the independent board members who used comparable salary data. The board member's decision was documented in the minutes and personnel files. The last review was conducted in march 2017. The president/ceo, along with a board member, determined the salaries for the other officers using comparable salary data and contemporaneously documented their decisions in the personnel files.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization makes its governing documents, conflict of interest policy, and financial statements available to the public upon request.

FORM 990, PART VII, SECTION A:

Ronni goldfarb, founder of eai, served as president & ceo through january 25, 2018. As of january 26, 2018, she became a senior advisor consultant to eai. She remained a board director. Part vii, section a reports her total 2018 compensation, both as an employee of and a contractor to eai. Part vii, section b reports her 2018 compensation as a contractor only.

IRS990/Desc0SAHEL: VOICES FOR PEACE WORKS IN 5 FRENCH SPEAKING COUNTRIES ACROSS THE SAHEL TO EMPOWER VULNERABLE POPULATIONS TO ENGAGE WITH THEIR GOVERNMENTS AT THE LOCAL, REGIONAL, AND NATIONAL LEVEL. THROUGH RADIO PROGRAMMING AND OTHER MEANS, CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS - INCLUDING YOUTH, WOMEN, AND SOCIAL MEDIA ENTREPRENEURS - CRAFT ALTERNATIVE MESSAGES DESIGNED TO CHALLENGE THE RHETORIC FROM EXTREMIST GROUPS ACTIVE IN THE AREA. THESE ALTERNATIVE MESSAGES TAP INTO AND EMPOWER LOCALS' DESIRE TO TRANSFORM SOCIETY, WHICH IS AT THE ROOT OF MUCH OF THE CIVIL UNREST IN THE SAHEL. NOTABLE OUTCOMES FROM THIS YEAR INCLUDE SPREADING AWARENESS AND GAINING PUBLIC BUY-IN ON BURKINA FASO'S EMERGENCY DEVELOPMENT PLAN FOR THE SAHEL; ORGANIZING A NATIONAL PLATFORM FOR THE MARGINALIZED AND DISPLACED KANURI ETHNIC GROUP IN CAMEROON; AND FOSTERING A BUDDING CULTURE OF CIVIC ENGAGEMENT IN CHAD THROUGH RADIO ROUNDTABLES AND PUBLIC DEBATES.THE PARTICIPATORY RESPONSIVE GOVERNANCE (PRG) - PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY (PA) IS IMPLEMENTED BY COUNTERPART INTERNATIONAL, INC. (CPI). UNDER THIS ACTIVITY, CPI HAS AWARDED EAI A THREE-YEAR (2016-2019) GRANT TO CARRY OUT CIVIC EDUCATION ACTIVITIES AND FACILITATE PUBLIC DIALOGUES THAT ARE RESPONSIVE TO PUBLIC PRIORITIES IN NIGER. IN 2018, EAI ORGANIZED NUMEROUS LIVE BROADCAST ROUNDTABLES AND FOLLOW-UP LISTENING AND DISCUSSION GROUP (LDG) SESSIONS THAT SERVED AS CATALYSTS FOR COMMUNITY ACTION. FOR EXAMPLE, IN ZINDER, AFTER THE PRG-PA PROGRAM BROADCAST A ROUNDTABLE ON HEALTH AWARENESS, THE LOCAL EAI LED LDG HELD A HEALTH SENSITIZATION TRAINING AND SUBSEQUENTLY MOBILIZED ITS COMMUNITY TO CONDUCT A BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN AT THE NATIONAL HOSPITAL.
