ODC Theater exists to empower and develop innovative artists through commissioning, presenting, mentorship, and space access; it develops informed, engaged and committed audiences; and advocates for the performing arts as an essential component to the economic and cultural development of our community. Dedicated to the lifecycle of the artistic process, ODC Theater aims to inspire audiences, cultivate artists, engage community, and foster diversity and inclusion through dance.

Founded in 1976, ODC Theater exists to empower and develop innovative artists by participating in the creation of new works through presenting, mentorship and access.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The tax return is prepared by an outside accounting firm. After completion of said returns, the organization is sent a draft of the tax returns to be reviewed and examined. The organization makes copies of the returns and distributes to those individuals charged with governance. Those individuals at that time can review and if applicable discuss any line items in the return with the accountant who has prepared the return. If all items are found to be acceptable, an authorization is signed and provided to authorize the outside accounting firm to process, sign and provide copies of the returns to be filed (paper or electronically) with the designated governmental agencies. The tax returns are then signed by the organization, stamped and mailed with certified return receipt or the signed form 8879 is provided to the outside accounting firm allowing electronic filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

Hiring or contracting is done using established HR policies. To ensure that ODC monitors areas for potential conflict of interest, committees are used to hire staff and/or contract with outside service providers. No one person in the organization can contract or hire any individual without the consent of the ED, AD and the Finance Manager. Any conflicts of interest found are brought to the attention of the Board for further action.

IRS990/Desc0ODC Theater, led by Theater Director Julie Potter, delivers its mission by commissioning, presenting, mentorship and providing space access. ODC Theater has earned a national reputation as an incubator for emerging and mid-career artists. Numerous professionals who are now recognized as luminaries in the field received their debut presentations from ODC Theater. This roster includes: Eiko & Koma, Bill T. Jones, Sarah Michelson, John Heginbotham, Andrea Miller (Gallim Dance), Emily Johnson and Bodytraffic. ODC Theaters Artists in Residence program fosters the artistic and administrative growth of Bay Area artists over a three-year residency. The 2016 cohort was: Sheldon Smith and Lisa Wymore (dance theater), Nicole Klaymoon (contemporary hip hop dance theater), Gerald Casel (ethnographic and postmodern dance), and Maurya Kerr (contemporary ballet). The cohort reflects ODC Theaters commitment to aesthetic and ethnic diversity. The three-year residency includes artistic commissions, creative space, participation in a choreographic response team, administrative mentorship, the opportunity to host an Administrative Fellow, compensated participation in an annual retreat, technical residencies and preview performances. These opportunities constitute support at every level of the creative process. In addition to the cohort of individual artists, ODC Theater also hosts Resident Companies. 2016 Companies are: Garrett Moulton Dance, Amy Seiwerts Imagery, Hope Mohr Dance, and RAWdance. These companies receive discounted rates on classes, discounted space rental, and priority booking before studios are made available to the public. ODC Theater leverages grant and other contributed support to award Bay Area artists with artistic and merit-based space and labor subsidies to self-present at ODC Theater. ODC Theater is the site of more than 150 performances each year, involving nearly 1000 local, regional, national and international artists. Three out of four of each of ODC Theaters rental participants receive up to 50% subsidy on performance space, and studio rental is discounted for all non-profit organizations and artists.
