| IRS990/Description | 0 | In 2012, ODC Theater began its second full season since reopening after renovation and expansion in 2010 and its first under new Director, Christy Bolingbroke. Six curated artists were presented in a diverse range of media including dance, music, opera, and film. The Theater also inaugurated the Walking Distance Dance Festival-SF, a fringe-style collection of 16 dance performances featuring 12 national and international dance artists (including ODC/Dance) presented over the course of three days in June and July all within the campus three performance spaces. 17,718 people attended one of the 65 performances held at ODC Theater in 2012.ODC Theater announced its new class of resident artists: Hope Mohr Dance, Amy Siewert/Imagery, Sherwood Chen & Amara Tabor-Smith, and Scott Wells & Dancers. These established, mid-career dance artists will benefit from a three-year residency that offers opportunities for interaction with all aspects of ODCs creative campus. This includes not only space for rehearsal and performance, but critical feedback from ODCs artistic leadership; technical support around areas such as finance, marketing, fundraising, and professional development in the areas of dance education, outreach, and audience development. The resident artist program is the largest of many commitments that represent a renewed focus on supporting mid-career artists. Take 5, an audience engagement initiative in which choreographers preview selections from works-in-progress and the audience responds through a moderated discussion and shares their feedback via comment cards and voting, was launched in 2012. Two successful Take 5 sessions were held during the course of the year. ODC Theaters rental subsidy program received a boost in from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation. The newly-christened Rainin Opportunity Fund will allow five high-quality Bay Area dance artists to access ODC Theaters critically-acclaimed performance space. The popularity of this subsidy program encouraged the ODC Theater to secure additional funds from the Fleishhacker Foundation to add another round of rental subsidies to the opportunity fund. 10 dance artists were awarded rental subsidies over the course of the year.Four dance artists participated in the Sandbox Series in 2012. This program affords choreographers the opportunity to investigate ideas by underwriting the materials for their exploration: time, space, and dancers. An informal showing of work developed during this process was a frequent (but not necessary) part of the Sandbox Series experience.Through our restructured resident artist program, Theater rental subsidies, and Sandbox Series we are providing opportunities for established Bay Area dance artists to create, rehearse, and stretch their creative potential. While opportunities exist for emerging dance artists (and we are committed to continuing our own programming in that area) artistic staff noted a lack of similar opportunities for more established dance artists and sought to address it. |
