“Clefworks is a music outreach program designed to promote the education and enjoyment of chamber music through a series of performances in the montgomery area. During clefworks 2017-18 season, we brought musicians to over 3,900 people in montgomery. Throughout the academic year we visited 6 schools and 4 other non-profits, including the cancer center, alzheimer's ministry, and boys and girls club. The students served at these various events ranged in ages from kindergarten to college, with a focus on children under 13. For these school events, we hired 12 alabama musicians, one visiting fellow with the montgomery symphony, and 3 musicians from boston. During our annual cleffest in march, there was one ticketed performance and a free children's concert, in addition to our visits to 8 schools. The westerlies, an award winning ensemble from new york, was brought to montgomery through arts grants. This ensemble spent the week engaging the community, visiting schools and sharing their talents with a broad audience. Their final concert was held in a historic movie theatre to a sold0out crowd of newly-minted chamber music fans, many of whom had not attended a chamber music concert before. A visual arts exhibit was featured during the public performance, showcasing work from two groups of students. High school art students used the theme of music as their inspiration, while elementary aged artists listened to a westerlies' original composition while they painted. 2017-18 cleffest included 9 educational components, shared with students and teachers alike. The festival featured 9 paid guest musicians, 35 volunteers, and clefworks part-time executive director.”
