The Alliance for Peacebuilding's mission is threefold: Innovate - We cultivate innovation in the field of peacebuilding by accelerating and integrating new concepts and approaches through inventive and collaborative programming that pushes the boundaries of traditional peacebuilding and effectiveness. Impact - We prove the impact of peacebuilding by encouraging a culture of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) across the field - developing more rigorous M&E methods and fostering a culture of openness and accountability. Influence - We influence the broader peacebuilding field by fostering an understanding of systemic approaches to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, and ensuring they are integrated into the programs and policies of governments and donors, international agencies, and non-government organizations; and by shifting public awareness and promoting social action through the use of media to effectively convey peacebuilding and conflict resolution messages.
The alliance for peacebuilding is a leader in developing and disseminating innovative approaches to peacebuilding, catalyzing collaboration between related fields including development, relief, human rights, democracy, security sector reform, media, neuroscience, and others. Afp connects its members and civil society actors from around the world with us policymakers and broad international policy initiatives. Afp is a global membership association of over 120 peacebuilding organizations, and a network of nearly 30,000 professionals developing processes for change in the most complex, chaotic conflict environments in the us and around the world. Afp amplifies the strengths of its members and works collaboratively on issues that are too large for any one organization to tackle by itself. “Afp's membership is a coalition of organizations and professionals around the world working together to enhance the impact and effectivenss of the peacebuilding community”
“Afp organization members have the power to elect or appoint one or more members of the governing body. The afp membership manual states: the designated representative (dr) is the duly authorized agent of an organization for the purpose of participating in afp decision-making structures and governance (e,.g. The annual conference, committee membership, board elections, etc). Member organizations should be represented in afp's governance by principals of the organizations(e.g. Ceos or directors of programs or divisions charged with carrying out the organization's international peacebuilding work). It is important that all afp drs have stature and authority within their own organizations to make commitments to afp on behalf of those organizations. Participation in governance should be by that individual, not by proxy. In certain situations, another staff person may be substituted, with approval by afp's ceo. One of the most important functions of the designated representative is voting on new afp board members, and new by-laws amendments. Section 3.07 of our by-laws states that "a quorum for the transaction of any business shall consist of at least one third (1/3) of the entire organizational membership present". Electronic voting is allowed under the bylaws. Section 3.08 of afp's by-laws describes the voting procedure: each member shall have one (1) vote. Whenever any corporate action is to be taken by vote of the members, it shall, except as otherwise required by law, be authorized by consensus, or where consensus cannot be reached, by a majority of the votes cast at a meeting of members by the members entitled to vote thereon. Voting on all matters may be conducted by mail, telephone call, telegram, cablegram, electronic mail, or any other means of electronic or telephonic transmission provided that the member shall state, or submit information from which it can be determined, that the method of voting chosen was authorized by the member.”
“See note for form 990 part vi, section a, line 7a”
“The form 990 is reviewed in detail by the organization's president/ceo, chairperson and treasurer of the board of directors prior to finalization. The final document is forwarded via email to the entire board of directors before it is filed with the irs”
“During a regular board meeting each year, the president/ceo discusses with the board members any potential conflicts of interest and board members are asked to notify the president/ceo and/or the board chairperson of any conflicts of interest.”
“The board of directors discusses and approves the compensation of the president/ceo.”
“Governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public upon written request to the president/ceo”
“Governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public upon written request to the president/ceo”
“No changes to oversite commitee”
“Alliance is exempt from income taxes, except for unrelated business income, under section 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue service code, and has not been classified as a private foundation. Consequently, there is no provision for income taxes. Alliance had no unrelated business income for the year ended december 31, 2019. Alliance adopted the provisions of fasb asc, "accounting for uncertainty in income taxes", having no significant impavt on its financial statements. The provisions clarify the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an organization's financial statements. Management believe it has taken no uncertain tax positions that require disclosure. Tax return filings are subject to examination by the irs, generally for three years after they are filed. Alliance's tax returns for years before 2017 are no longer subject to examination.”

| IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc | 0 | POLICY & ADVOCACYAFP ADVOCATES AND EDUCATES ON BEHALF OF THE PEACEBUILDING FIELD TO ENSURE CONFLICT PREVENTION, VIOLENCE REDUCTION, AND PEACEBUILDING LEARNINGS AND FINDINGS CORRELATE TO BETTER POLICY, PROGRAMMING, AND LEGAL FRAMEWORKS. WE WORK TO INFORM THE U.S. CONGRESS ON PEACEBUILDING POLICY PRIORITIES IN LEGISLATION AND FUNDING; ADVISE THE U.S. EXECUTIVE BRANCH ON PEACEBUILDING AND VIOLENCE REDUCTION POLICIES; AND BUILD GLOBAL COALITIONS OF TECHNICAL EXPERTS THROUGH OUR NETWORKS TO FILL RESEARCH GAPS AND SHOWCASE INNOVATION NETWORKS. AFP'S CONGRESSIONAL ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION WORK MADE REMARKABLE PROGRESS IN OUTREACH IN 2019, WHICH WAS CRITICAL TO ADOPTION OF A NEW U.S STRATEGY FOR FRAGILE AND CONFLICT-AFFECTED STATES, DEFENDING AGAINST SWEEPING, PROPOSED U.S. FOREIGN ASSISTANCE CUTS, AND ADVOCATING ON SPECIFIC PEACEBUILDING ISSUES, FROM YOUTH PEACEBUILDING TO YEMEN. AFP CO-LEADS A COALITION OF OVER 65 ORGANIZATIONS WITH MERCY CORPS IN SUPPORT OF THE GLOBAL FRAGILITY ACT, WHICH WAS ADOPTED BY CONGRESS, WITH STRONG BIPARTISAN SUPPORT, IN DECEMBER 2020. AFP EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS ON THE GFA ELEVATED ISSUES OF VIOLENCE REDUCTION AND CONFLICT PREVENTION IN NATIONAL MEDIA, THINK TANK ANALYSES, AND OTHER POLICY FRAMEWORKS. THE NEW POLICY REQUIRES THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE U.S. AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, AND OTHER FEDERAL AGENCIES, TO DEVELOP A NEW STRATEGY TO REDUCE AND PREVENT VIOLENT CONFLICT. THE GFA GIVES THE U.S. GOVERNMENT THE TOOLS NEEDED FOR A LONG-TERM, COORDINATED APPROACH TO IDENTIFY AND MITIGATE THE DRIVERS OF VIOLENCE. 2019 WAS ALSO AN ACTIVE YEAR FOR PEACEBUILDING-RELEVANT INITIATIVES IN THE U.S. EXECUTIVE BRANCH, NOTABLY THE DEPARTMENTS OF STATE AND USAID. AFP CONSULTED CLOSELY ON THE STATE DEPARTMENT STRATEGIC PREVENTION INITIATIVE, WHICH WAS RELEASED IN JULY, AND CONVENED OUR MEMBERS AT AFP TO GIVE FEEDBACK TO INFORM ITS DEVELOPMENT. THE USAID TRANSFORMATION WAS ANOTHER MAJOR AREA OF CONSULTATIONS, PARTICULARLY THE PROPOSED NEW BUREAU FOR CONFLICT PREVENTION AND STABILIZATION, WHICH OFFERS NEW OPPORTUNITIES TO IMPROVE U.S. EFFORTS TO MONITOR AND MEASURE CONFLICT PREVENTION. AFP WORKS SIGNIFICANTLY "BEHIND THE SCENES" TO ENSURE OUR FIELD'S BEST LEARNINGS AND FINDINGS ARE INCORPORATED INTO DONOR AND GOVERNMENTAL POLICIES AND PRACTICE. WE HAVE BEEN CHAMPIONS OF GREATER FOCUS ON PREVENTION, VIOLENCE, AND MONITORING AND EVALUATION AND WILL CONTINUE TO WORK ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THESE NEW POLICIES AND APPROACHES. AFP CONTINUED TO BUILD COALITIONS OF TECHNICAL EXPERTS THROUGH OUR SEVEN ACTIVE WORKING GROUPS IN 2019 (COUNTERING VIOLENT EXTREMISM; NONVIOLENT ACTION; FRAGILITY, CONFLICT, & VIOLENCE; ELECTORAL VIOLENCE; MALI; WOMEN AND PEACEBUILDING; AND TECHNOLOGY AND SOCIAL MEDIA). THE GOAL OF THE WORKING GROUPS IS TO SHARE BEST PRACTICES AND ENSURE THAT LEARNINGS AND FINDINGS CORRELATE TO BETTER POLICY AND PROGRAMMING. THE GROUPS ALSO IDENTIFY GAPS IN PROGRAMS AND RESEARCH WHICH HELP DEVELOP PUBLICATIONS THAT ADVANCE THOUGHT-LEADERSHIP |

OUR MEMBERS REPRESENT NOT ONLY TRADITIONALLY PEACEBUILDING AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION ORGANIZATIONS BUT BRANCH OUT TO OTHER CRITICAL FIELDS, SUCH AS THE ENVIRONMENT, FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, ACADEMIA, DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE, AND MUCH MORE, TACKLING ISSUES TOO LARGE FOR ANY ONE ORGANIZATION TO ADDRESS ALONE. PEACECON 2019, HOSTED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE UNITED STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE (USIP), WAS OUR LARGEST ANNUAL CONFERENCE EVER AND PROVIDED A DYNAMIC PLATFORM FOR AFP MEMBERS TO NETWORK WITH PRIVATE FOUNDATIONS, POLICYMAKERS AND DONORS, LEADING NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS, AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR. PEACECON OFFERED UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCHANGING IDEAS, REFLECTING ON DOMESTIC AND INTERNATIONAL CRISES, DISCUSSING THE MOST IMPORTANT ISSUES IN THE PEACEBUILDING FIELD, AND DEVELOPING COLLABORATIVE APPROACHES. PEACECON 2019 FOCUSED ON HIGHLIGHTING SOLUTIONS TO THE WORLD'S MOST DIFFICULT PROBLEMS IN CONFLICT-AFFECTED AND FRAGILE STATES. IT ATTRACTED PROMINENT FIGURES SUCH AS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE LAUREATE AND FORMER PRESIDENT OF LIBERIA ELLEN JOHNSON SIRLEAF, WHO SPOKE ABOUT THE IMPERATIVE FOR WOMEN'S INCLUSION IN GLOBAL PEACEBUILDING AND PEACEMAKING EFFORTS. PEACECON ALSO FEATURED KEYNOTE SPEAKER CARNEGIE ENDOWMENT FOR INTERNATIONAL PEACE AMBASSADOR BILL BURNS, WHO DISCUSSED SHIFTING U.S. DIPLOMATIC APPROACHES TO BUILD PEACE IN AN INCREASINGLY DISRUPTED WORLD. OTHER PLENARY SPEAKERS INCLUDED FORMER U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT SENIOR ADVISOR FOR INTERNATIONAL DISABILITY RIGHTS JUDY HEUMANN, WHO UNDERSCORED THE NEED TO APPLY A DISABILITY LENS TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION (DEI). KEY CONFERENCE PEACEBUILDING THEMES INCLUDED FRAGILITY, DIGITAL PEACEBUILDING, INTERRELIGIOUS PEACEBUILDING, MOVEMENT BUILDING, VIOLENT EXTREMISM, DEI, GENDER, YOUTH, LEARNING AND EVALUATION, AND NONVIOLENT ACTION. PEACECON 2019 WELCOMED OVER 800 REGISTRANTS AND 289 ORGANIZATIONS FROM 51 COUNTRIES. ATTENDEES REPRESENTED GOVERNMENT, GLOBAL AND GRASSROOTS NGOS, ACADEMIA, PHILANTHROPIC INSTITUTIONS, AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR. |

IN 2019, AFP AND A GLOBAL COALITION OF PEACEBUILDING ORGANIZATIONS PARTNERED TO LAUNCH +PEACE, A NEW CAMPAIGN TO MOBILIZE PEOPLE, GOVERNMENTS AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO TACKLE GLOBAL VIOLENCE AND DIVISION AND BUILD PEACE AT SCALE. IN 2019, +PEACE LAUNCHED PEACEBUILDING ACTION WEEK, WHICH FEATURED DOZENS OF GLOBAL EVENTS IN THE RUN-UP TO INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE SEPTEMBER 21. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH PATHFINDERS AND IMPACTPEACE, +PEACE ALSO LAUNCHED IN 2019 THE PEACE IN OUR CITIES CAMPAIGN, WHICH UNITED 15 GLOBAL CITIES IN A PLEDGE TO HALVE LEVELS OF URBAN VIOLENCE BY 2030. AFP ALSO EXPANDED PARTNERSHIPS AND CONVENINGS TO FIND SOLUTIONS FOR NEW AND COMPLEX ISSUES THAT IMPACT THE PEACEBUILDING FIELD, FROM THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINING PEACE AGENDA AND THE WORLD BANK'S PATHWAYS FOR PEACE INITIATIVE TO DEI AND GENDER EQUALITY. THROUGHOUT 2019, AFP COLLABORATED WITH THE STIMSON CENTER, THE UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION OF THE NATIONAL CAPITAL AREA, THE UNITED STATES INSTITUTE OF PEACE, GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY LAW CENTER, BROOKINGS INSTITUTE, THE COUNCIL OF FOREIGN RELATIONS AND THE KEOUGH SCHOOL/NOTRE DAME, TO CONSTRUCT A SERIES OF ROUNDTABLES AND EVENTS ON THESE ISSUES. AFP INTEGRATED THESE INITIATIVES INTO OTHER MAJOR INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCES AND EVENTS, INCLUDING PEACECON 2019, THE REYKJAVIK WOMEN'S FORUM, AND THE STOCKHOLM FORUM ON PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT. AFP ENDED 2019 WITH APPROXIMATELY 28,000 SOCIAL MEDIA FOLLOWERS, CONTINUING A STEADY UPWARD TREND OF SOCIAL MEDIA GROWTH SINCE 2016. THROUGHOUT 2019, AFP RAISED THE PROFILE OF PEACEBUILDING AND OUR MEMBERS' VITAL WORK ON TRADITIONAL AND NEW MEDIA, BUILDING AWARENESS AROUND IMPORTANT GATHERINGS, REPORTS, AND HAPPENINGS. DURING AN ESPECIALLY FAST PACED AND CRISIS-DRIVEN NEWS CYCLE IN 2019, AFP WAS A VOICE OF AUTHORITY ON ISSUES RANGING FROM HOW TO RESPONSIBLY END U.S. MILITARY INVOLVEMENT IN AFGHANISTAN TO INCREASING CONFLICT DYNAMICS IN THE UNITED STATES. |
