Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Alliance for Peacebuilding's mission is threefold: Innovate - We cultivate innovation in the field of peacebuilding by accelerating and integrating new concepts and approaches through inventive and collaborative programming that pushes the boundaries of traditional peacebuilding and effectiveness. Impact - We prove the impact of peacebuilding by encouraging a culture of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) across the field - developing more rigorous M&E methods and fostering a culture of openness and accountability. Influence - We influence the broader peacebuilding field by fostering an understanding of systemic approaches to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, and ensuring they are integrated into the programs and policies of governments and donors, international agencies, and non-government organizations; and by shifting public awareness and promoting social action through the use of media to effectively convey peacebuilding and conflict resolution messages.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The Global Peace Index ranks the peacefulness of 158 nations using 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators which gauge ongoing domestic and international conflict, safety and security in society and militarization. Members hope the ranking will encourage lower ranked countries to become more peaceful.
Activity 3
In early 2011, the Alliance for Peacebuilding launched the Peacebuilding Systems Project (PSP). PSP applies systems thinking to peacebuilding with the ultimate goal of strengthening the field's ability to learn effectively and efficiently how to best engage with the complex environments in which they work. Peacebuilders' work includes multidimensional, highly adaptive, "wicked" problems that involve complex interrelationships among and between different social and environmental phenomena, like violence, poverty, disasters, economic performance, public health, crime, inter-group relations, ecological damage, gender dynamics, political crises, and more. This complexity makes it very difficult to see how specific programs are affecting the larger system. Lasting, sustainable peace is not possible if we continue to try to create it through a series of uncoordinated micro-level interventions. The complex, multi-faceted nature of conflict requires correspondingly diverse and flexible responses. Seeing a conversion of all of our work, AfP partnered with multi-disciplinary teams from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, George Mason University the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, the Center for Global Health and Peacebuilding, Group W, and several leading academics and practitioners in the field of complexity, systems and conflict management on developing a Learning-Enabled Architecture for Peacebuilding (LEAP). LEAP will integrate field experience in using complexity tools with extensive knowledge in data analysis and apply these tools to complex peacebuilding challenges.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0Other peacebuilding programs: Peacebuilding Mapping Project: While the peacebuilding field has become far more cohesive, it has also rapidly expanded since its founding. We continue to work to define which activities do or do not fall within the framework of peacebuilding and there has never been an inventory of the size, scope, economics and dynamics of the organizations and professionals actively engaged in peacebuilding. This project is designed to fill that void in order to establish a consensus on professional peacebuilding activities in the United States. Peacebuilding Evaluation Project: Peacebuilders today operate in increasingly complex situations, where poverty, weak governance structures, state failure and conflict are so intimately linked that building peace inherently overlaps with traditional development activities, youth programs, health initiatives, human rights support and governance processes. To address the field-wide need to improve evaluation and learning practices in a collective manner, the Peacebuilding Evaluation Project: A Forum for Donors and Implementers (PEP) was created. As the first forum of its kind, PEP provided a neutral space for 24 donors and implementers to honestly discuss issues around evaluation through an online discussion platform and a series of four meetings over the span of one year. This has resulted in a wealth of recommendations on how to improve evaluation as a community and collective momentum to do this.
