The Alliance for Peacebuilding's mission is threefold: Innovate - We cultivate innovation in the field of peacebuilding by accelerating and integrating new concepts and approaches through inventive and collaborative programming that pushes the boundaries of traditional peacebuilding and effectiveness. Impact - We prove the impact of peacebuilding by encouraging a culture of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) across the field - developing more rigorous M&E methods and fostering a culture of openness and accountability. Influence - We influence the broader peacebuilding field by fostering an understanding of systemic approaches to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, and ensuring they are integrated into the programs and policies of governments and donors, international agencies, and non-government organizations; and by shifting public awareness and promoting social action through the use of media to effectively convey peacebuilding and conflict resolution messages.
The Alliance for Peacebuilding is a leader in developing and disseminating innovative approaches to peacebuilding, catalyzing collaboration between related fields including development, relief, human rights, democracy, security sector reform, media, neuroscience, and others. AfP connects its members and civil society actors from around the world with US policymakers and broad international policy initiatives. AfP is a global membership association of 100 peacebuilding organizations, 1,000 professionals, and a network of more than 15,000 people developing processes for change in the most complex, chaotic conflict environments in the US and around the world. AfP amplifies the strengths of its members and works collaboratively on issues that are too large for any one organization to tackle by itself. “AfP's membership is a coalition of organizations and professionals around the world working together to enhance the impact and effectiveness of the peacebuilding community”
“AfP organization members have the power to elect or appoint one or more members of the governing body. The AfP Membership Manual states: The Designated Representative (DR) is the duly authorized agent of an organization for the purpose of participating in AfP decision-making structures and governance (e.g. the Annual Conference, committee membership, Board elections, etc.). Member organizations should be represented in AfP's governance by principals of the organizations (e.g. CEOs or directors of programs or divisions charged with carrying out the organization's international peacebuilding work). It is important that all AfP DRs have stature and authority within their own organizations to make commitments to AfP on behalf of those organizations. Participation in governance should be by that individual, not by proxy. In certain situations, another staff person may be substituted, with approval by AfP's CEO and/or Senior Manager for Outreach & Organizational Development. One of the most important functions of the Designated Representative is voting on new AfP Board Members, and new BY-LAWS amendments. Section 3.07 of our BY-LAWS states that "a quorum for the transaction of any business shall consist of at least one third (1/3) of the entire organizational membership present." Electronic voting is allowed under the by-laws. Section 3.08 of AfP's BY-LAWS describes the voting procedure: Each member shall have one (1) vote. Whenever any corporate action is to be taken by vote of the members, it shall, except as otherwise required by law, be authorized by consensus, or where consensus cannot be reached, by a majority of the votes cast at a meeting of members by the members entitled to vote thereon. Voting on all matters may be conducted by mail, telephone call, telegram, cablegram, electronic mail, or any other means of electronic or telephonic transmission provided that the member shall state, or submit information from which it can be determined, that the te method of voting chosen was authorized by the member.”
“See note for Form 990 Part VI, Section A, Line 7a.”
“The Form 990 is reviewed in detail by the organization's President/CEO, Chairperson and Treasurer of the Board of Directors prior to finalization. The final document is forwarded to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors via email prior to filing with the IRS. The entire document is distributed to the entire Board of Directors after it is filed with the IRS.”
“During a regular Board meeting each year, the President/CEO discusses with the Board members any potential conflicts of interest and Board members are asked to notify the President/CEO and or Chair of the Board of any conflicts.”
“The Board of Directors discusses and approves the compensation of the President/CEO. During 2015 the President/CEO did not receive a salary increase, or a bonus. The last time the President/CEO's compensation was reviewed was in 2011 when the individual was hired.”
“Governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public upon written request to the President/CEO.”
“Income Taxes: Alliance is exempt from income taxes, except for unrelated business income , under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service Code, and has not been classified as a private foundation. Consequently, there is no provision for income taxes. Alliance had no unrelated business income for the year ended December 31, 2016. Alliance adopted the provisions of FASB ASC, " Accountingfor Uncertainty in Income Taxes," having no significant impact on its financial statements. The provisions clarify the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in an organization' s financial statements. Management believes it has taken no uncertain tax positions that require disclosure. Tax return filings are subject to examination by the IRS, generally for three years after they are filed. Alliance's tax returns for tax years before 2012 are no longer subject to examination.”

| IRS990/Desc | 0 | Learning and Evaluation: While the peacebuilding field has made meaningful strides developing innovative strategies to measure and learn from its current practices and programs, the field still struggles to monitor and conduct evaluations that measure field wide impact. We are working to change the culture at the organizational level to demand more learning and accountability, demonstrate evidence-based results that show the field's impact and guide future policy change to improve peacebuilding practice. Since 2011, AfP has brought together leaders in the field through the Peacebuilding Evaluation Consortium (PEC) to develop and strengthen methodological rigor in monitoring, evaluation and learning practices; create a culture of evaluation and shared learning; and promote evidence-based policy and practice. With support from the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY), we have continued to develop and foster field-wide change through the following initiatives: * The publication of multiple key resources focused on improving the range of methods, tools, and processes, including the Online Field Guide - an open source compilation of foundational material and resources relevant to peacebuilding contexts on the design and conduct of evaluation; * The first peacebuilding evaluation mentorship program, connecting experienced practitioners and evaluators with less experienced mentees; * Continued sharing and learning through Thursday Talks on DM&E for Peace - 1,447 people participated in 23 Thursday Talks in 2016 that addressed a variety of issues in peacebuilding evaluation from creating community-driven indicators to exploring the role of funders in learning and evaluation in conflict; and * Publication of 2 policy briefs focused on violence reduction and actionable DM&E recommendations for policymakers and practitioners. The next focus of the project will support organizations to apply and utilize these tools and learnings in practice in order to create more consistent and evidence-based standards of peacebuilding practice. Since 2015, AfP has worked on the Effective Inter-religious Action in Peacebuilding Program (EIAP) in collaboration with GHR Foundation and other thought leaders in the field. The EIAP program aims to understand how we can better measure the effectiveness of inter-religious action. Understanding the impact of this work is necessary, given that inter-religious action can play an important role in developing social cohesion - a key factor is building resilient, peaceful societies. The program has formed a Global Advisory Council which advises the entire project and provides intellectual continuity for specific activities. The program has developed a Community of Practice on DME for Peace. It is one of the first online communities focused exclusively on how to monitor and evaluate inter-religious peacebuilding action. The EIAP program conducted a comprehensive meta evaluation and literature review to understand the current state of inter-religious peacebuilding by identifying key trends, challenges, and opportunities. Informed by these findings, the program developed an initial draft guide titled: Faith Matters: A Guide for the Design, Monitoring & Evaluation of Inter-Religious Action for Peacebuilding. This Guide incorporates a range of both quantitative and qualitative tools, processes and methods for application in different circumstances, depending on the context, nature of the implementing organization, evaluability of the program and stage/phase of the effort. The first draft of the Guide is being tested by a diverse group of organizations from Israel and the Palestinian Territories, Pakistan and Uganda that implement inter-religious action within peacebuilding programs. This process will help provide feedback to finalize the Guide. Throughout the project there has been engagement with Policymakers on Key Findings. AfP will share best practices for evaluating inter-religious action programs, and will recomme |

| IRS990/MissionDesc | 0 | The Alliance for Peacebuilding's mission is threefold: Innovate - We cultivate innovation in the field of peacebuilding by accelerating and integrating new concepts and approaches through inventive and collaborative programming that pushes the boundaries of traditional peacebuilding and effectiveness. |
