Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The Alliance for Peacebuilding's mission is threefold: Innovate - We cultivate innovation in the field of peacebuilding by accelerating and integrating new concepts and approaches through inventive and collaborative programming that pushes the boundaries of traditional peacebuilding and effectiveness. Impact - We prove the impact of peacebuilding by encouraging a culture of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) across the field - developing more rigorous M&E methods and fostering a culture of openness and accountability. Influence - We influence the broader peacebuilding field by fostering an understanding of systemic approaches to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, and ensuring they are integrated into the programs and policies of governments and donors, international agencies, and non-government organizations; and by shifting public awareness and promoting social action through the use of media to effectively convey peacebuilding and conflict resolution messages.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP), in collaboration with NAFSA: Association of International Educators and The Peace Alliance, has developed a four-year Strategic Communications Campaign to reclaim the narrative of peace and shift the peace and security conversation in America, prompting the country and policymakers to think about policies and practices that will make the world more secure as we emerge from a decade of perpetual war. The goal of the campaign is to influence how policymakers, including those in Congress, the executive branch, foreign policy agencies, and the military view peace as a key driver of stability. We seek to remind policymakers that peace is achievable and that peacebuilding offers powerful human security models that enhance the nation's security. This effort is not about making a choice between security and peace; it is about peace as a superior strategy and as a legitimate contributor to and objective of US national security.
Activity 3
The Peacebuilding Systems Project (PSP) applies systems thinking to peacebuilding with the ultimate goal of strengthening the field's ability to learn effectively and efficiently how to best engage with the complex environments in which they work. Peacebuilders' work includs multidimensional, highly adaptive, "wicked" problems that involve complex interrelationships among and between different social and environmental phenomena, like violence, provety, disasters, economic performance, public health, crime, inter-group relations, ecological damage, gender dynamics, political crises, and more. This complexity makes it very difficult to see how specific programs are affecting the larger system. Lasting, sustainable peace is not possible if we continue to try to create it through a series of uncoordinated micro-lecel interventions. the complex, multi-faceted nature of conflict requires correspondingly diverse and flexible responses. Seeing a conversion of all of our work, AfP partnered with multi-disciplinary teams from the University of wisconsin-Milwaukee, George Mason University, the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, the Center for Global Health and Peacebuilding, Group W, and several leading academics and practitioners in the field of complexity, systems and conflict management on developing a Learning-Enabled Architecture for Peacebuilding (LEAP). Leap will integrate field experience in using complexity tools with extensive knowledge in data analaysis and apply these tools to complex peacebuilding challenges.

IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0The 3P Human Security Program works to achieve a people-centered security strategy, which is a more successful, cost-effective, and sustainable national security strategy than traditional approaches. The program opens channels of communication between the Pentagon and local civil society organizations (CSOs) working to build human security from the ground up through conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Among its activities: 1. 3P offers training at US military academies and to senior officers on local capacity, NGOs, CSOs, and civil-military guidelines and humanitarian space. 2. 3P facilitates dialogue between civil society and the military to foster greater understanding and recognition of the contributions of civil society, its need for independence and civil-military joint interests in broadly defined human security and civilian protection. 3P is currently developing a curriculum for security forces on how they interact with civil society and relevant peacebuilding skills and processes. 3. 3P publishes articles, chapters, and guidance documents to bring military perspectives on stabilization into dialogue with civil society approaches to development, peacebuilding and conflict transformation. Like peacebuilding practitioners, women and men in the military see the complexities of conflict up close, and they often quickly recognize the value of peacebuilding approaches to addressing difficult policy problems overseas. As a result of years of outreach facilitating communication with civil society, military officials have shown strong interest in learning from the peacebuilding field. 3P program staff have been invited to give training courses, lectures, and workshops at the US Army War College, National Defense University, the Pentagon, and even in locations such as Afghanistan. In 2012, the 3P Human Security Program (formerly the 3D Security Initiative) moved from Eastern Mennonite University to become a program of AfP. Now former 3P Director Lisa Schirch works full time on AfP's program on human security.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1Other peacebuilding programs: Peacebuilding Mapping Project - The peacebuilding field has grown exponentially in both impact and influence over the past twenty years. Yet, in order for the field to meet the challenges of 21st century violence, it must evolve from what we refer to as Peacebuilding 1.0, a dynamic, yet disconnected series of activities across a broad range of sectors, to Peacebuilding 2.0, a unified field that harnesses the collective power of all peacebuilding interventions and leads to more stable, resilient societies. The PMP report, Peacebuilding 2.0: Mapping the Boundaries of an Expanding Field was launched in October 2012, the West Coast Launch is scheduled for March 2013. Peacebuilding Evaluation Project - Peacebuilders operate in complex environments, where poverty, weak governance structures, state failure, and conflict are so intimately linked that building peace inherently overlaps with traditional international development and stabilization. These complex dynamics have given rise to ever more multifaceted peacebuilding programs, which require the use of methodologies that can capture long-term and multipart change processes, impact, and/or effectiveness of those programs. USIP and AfP held a peacebuilding evaluation evidence summit. Made possible by a grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the summit was built on the premise of best efforts to date and success in peacebuilding evaluation. AfP and USIP are currently leading a process to develop a set of evaluation principles that aim to support and foster better evaluation practices in the field. These standards were produced in collaboration with peacebuilding stakeholders through six global feedback session groups in Geneva, London, New York, Nairobi, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. AfP Membership - Alliance for Peacebuilding (AfP) members are a rich and diverse community of over seventy peacebuilding organizations, several hundred professional members, and a network of over 15,000 people. AfP members are active in 153 countries and employ more than 5,400 people. AfP enhances the prospects for global change by amplifying the voices of its members and seeks to develop processes for change in the most complex, chaotic conflict environments around the world. AfP recognizes the importance of working across professional and political boundaries through collaboration and sharing resources. Policymaker Engagement - Conflict prevention is a school of thought and a field of practice aimed at stopping armed violence and changing the structural factors that cause groups to fight. Peacebuilding is a broader term that encompasses activities across many fields and at all levels in society that help build more peaceful and just relationships between groups in conflict. Neither of these concepts are universally understood in the US government. Part of AfP's mission in Washington is to help policymakers understand what the world looks like through a peacebuilding lens and apply those approaches to foreign policy.
