Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory supports unconventional works in the performing and visual arts that cannot be fully realized in a traditional proscenium theater, concert hall, or white wall gallery. With its soaring, 55,000 square foot Drill Hall and its period rooms by Gilded Age designers, the Armory enables artists to create, students to explore, and wide audiences to experience epic, adventurous work that cannot be done elsewhere in New York. The Armory has been lauded as "a playground for artists of outsize imaginations" (Wall Street Journal) with The New York Times declaring "few cultural institutions have been as adept at pushing the cultural FOMO button, triggering that 'fear of missing out' that New Yorkers hate"Park Avenue Armory.has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City." As with non-traditional programming, arts education has found a special niche at the Armory, using its unique assets - a magical ruine
To restore, renovate and revitalize the historic park avenue armory a contemporary arts institution.

“In 2023, park avenue armory presented a wide range of exceptional, unconventional works, including new commissions and acclaimed existing productions retrofitted to the wade thompson drill hall, as well as new york debuts from singular artistic voices. In conjunction with each production, free arts education programs immersed thousands of elementary, middle, and high school students from historically under-resourced new york city public schools with visionary artists and their creative processes. Drill hall productions: love (february 28 - march 25, 2023): written and directed by alexander zeldin, love depicted three families placed in temporary accommodation in the period leading up to christmas: a middle-aged man and his elderly mother, a young family expecting a new baby, and a woman who is a refugee from sudan. Reimagined for the vast wade thompson drill hall for its north american premiere after a critically acclaimed tour in europe and the uk, the armory's presentation of love was named a critic's pick by the new york times and immersed audiences in a story about family and the resilience of the human spirit for our times. The doctor (june 3 - august 19, 2023): celebrated director robert icke returned to the armory, after receiving two new york times critic's picks for hamlet and oresteia in 2022, with the north american premiere of the doctor starring his longtime collaborator, juliet stevenson. The doctor was a free adaptation of arthur schnitzler's professor bernhardi, and explored the clash between science and religion, as well as the rights of individuals and how identities collide. Doppelganger (september 22 - 28, 2023): in a rare solo performance, jonas kaufmann, known as "the world's greatest tenor" (telegraph uk), appeared in the wade thompson drill hall in a new armory commission that was also named a critic's pick by the new york times. A theatrical staging of franz schubert's deeply emotional song cycle schwanengesang ("swan song"), doppelganger was led by one of opera's most adventurous directors, claus guth, with sets by award-winning designer michael levine, and lighting design by urs schnebaum. Mutant; destrudo (october 11 - 15, 2023): venezuelan musician and multimedia artist arca made her debut in the wade thompson drill hall with a new armory commission, mutant; destrudo. A grammy and latin grammy award nominee as well as recent uk music video award winner, she has worked with fka twigs, bjrk, and lady gaga, and composed a constantly transforming soundtrack for the museum of modern art's lobby using artificial intelligence. The rite of spring / common ground[s] (november 29 - december 14, 2023): closing the 2023 season were two works of contemporary dance: the rite of spring and common ground[s]. In iconic german choreographer pina bausch's monumental the rite of spring - set to igor stravinsky's score - a "chosen one" is sacrificed, changing the season from winter to spring. For this thrilling staging of bausch's trailblazing work - named a critic's pick by the new york times - senegalese choreographer and dancer germaine acogny, founder of dance company cole des sables and widely considered to be, "the mother of african contemporary dance," specially assembled a collective of 34 dancers from 14 african countries. Common ground[s] was a new work choreographed and performed by acogny and choreographer and dancer malou airaudo, who performed leading roles in many of bausch's early works as a member of tanztheater wuppertal pina bausch. A poetic and tender antidote to rite, the duet explored age, ancestry, and our common human thread.”
“Historic room programs: recital series: the armory's acclaimed recital series returned to the board of officers room, "one of the most intimate and ideal spaces for vocal recitals" (the new york times). Presenting classical and contemporary works in an unparalleled setting, the series featured: contemporary baritone stphane degout and classical pianist cdric tiberghien (april 3 & 5, 2023); acclaimed tenor allan clayton with pianist james baillieu (april 27 & 29, 2023); celebrated pianist pavel kolesnikov (may 22 & 24, 2023); renowned american soprano julia bullock and pianist john arida (september 11 & 13, 2023), whose performance was named a critic's pick in the new york times; grammy-nominated ensemble sandbox percussion (october 1 & 3, 2023); and one of the most promising voices of her generation, mezzo-soprano kate lindsey with pianist justina lee (october 16 & 17, 2023). Artist studio: in the restored veterans room, the eclectic artists studio series, curated by jason moran, expanded to be a yearlong residency with the association for the advancement of creative musicians, inc. (aacm). For nearly 60 years, this revolutionary collective of artists, musicians, and creators from a range of backgrounds has been blending art forms and pushing boundaries. Among the participating artists were pulitzer prize-winning composer henry threadgill (february 18, 2023); drummer and percussionist, thurman barker with "musical power couple" (the new york times) adegoke steve colson and iqua colson (april 22, 2023); experimental composer and musicologist george lewis (november 18 & december 18, 2023); percussionist and composer reggie nicholson (november 18, 2023); and prodigious pianist, organist, vocalist, composer, and improvisationalist amina claudine myers (december 18, 2023). Making space at the armory: organized by curator of public programming dr. Tavia nyong'o, presents a series of talks, salons, symposia, performances, and other activations that bring artists, activists, cultural leaders, scholars, and audiences into dialogue about culture in a changing america through an artistic lens. In 2023, making space offered six public programs conceived in tandem with the armory's mainstage productions as well as off-shoot explorations of other relevant topics. Programs included: symposium: sound & color - the future of race in design (january 14 & 15, 2023) with partners branden jacobs-jenkins, mimi lien, mikaal sulaiman, and others; salon: juke joint (march 31 & april 1, 2023) with pamela sneed and stew; hapo na zamani (black arts movement past and present) (may 20, 2023), presented in partnership with harlem stage, carl hancock rux, and vernon reid, and featuring carrie mae weems and dianne smith; salon: hidden conversations (june 18, 2023) with national black theatre, sade lythcott, and others; corpus delicti (october 14, 2023) with the nyc trans oral history project, aviva silverman, kate bornstein, and cassils; and seasons of dance: contemporary dance salon (december 3, 2023) with thomas defrantz, jorge puerta armenta, germaine acogny, malou airaudo, and dancers from the company of the rite of spring. Commissioning and artists-in-residence: the armory's commissioning program offers fees and a support structure to artists to create new proposals for the wade thompson drill hall, developing epic work for an unconventional space. Commissioning is critical to ensuring that productions in upcoming seasons represent a diverse range of artists and respond to relevant issues of our time. In 2023, we presented two new armory commissions, doppelganger and mutant;destrudo. Additionally, we continued to provide space and support to our artists-in-residence, including lynn nottage, branden jacobs-jenkins, carmelita tropicana, christine jones, steven hogett, reggie (regg roc) gray and flexn, tina satter and half straddle, du yun, raja feather kelly and feath3r theory, and the association for the advancement of creative musicians, inc. (aacm). Art”
“Partner schools: in 2023, the armory worked closely with the teachers and administrators at our partner schools to identify specific school curriculum goals to support through exposure to a variety of art forms represented in our artistic programming. Armory teaching artists designed and facilitated in-depth residencies that engage students with the armory's unconventional art and commitment to historic preservation, providing tangible, real-world connections to their classroom studies. Residencies continued at seven long-term partner schools: bronx envision academy, claremont international high school, the new school for leadership and the arts/m.s. 244, the parkchester school/p.s. 106, williamsburg high school for architecture and design, international high school at prospect heights, and vanguard high school. Additionally, production-based programming participating school, bronx compass high school, launched its first armory partner school residency in the last school year. Youth corps: the armory youth corps is a rigorous, closely mentored, paid internship program that provides meaningful employment while introducing high school and post-high school students to the creative processes of artists of the highest caliber, encouraging them to explore the wonder of creative thinking. In 2023, approximately 100 youth corps interns continued to be fully integrated into the organization's operations, enabling them to explore various careers in the cultural sector through direct engagement with each of our programs. High school and post-high school youth corps received training as front-of-house staff during the armory's wade thompson drill hall productions, participated in an advisory board and the creation of the annual student summit on the arts and social justice, created commissioned original artworks through armory art together, contributed to a supportive space to navigate the complexities of higher education through cohort, built meaningful work experiences with a variety of armory departments, and more. Concluded with a q&a session that allowed students to learn about de bique's singing techniques, life in trinidad, and her musical history and inspiration.”

“The armory is exempt from federal, state, and local income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the code and, therefore, has made no provision for income taxes in the accompanying financial statements. In addition, the armory has been determined by the internal revenue service (irs) not to be a "private foundation" within the meaning of section 509(a) of the code. The armory does not believe it has taken any material uncertain tax positions and, accordingly, it has not recorded any liability for unrecognized tax benefits. The armory has filed for and received income tax exemptions in the jurisdictions where it is required to do so. Additionally, the armory has filed irs form 990 information returns, as required, and all other applicable returns in jurisdictions where so required.
