Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory supports unconventional works in the performing and visual arts that cannot be fully realized in a traditional proscenium theater, concert hall, or white wall gallery. With its soaring, 55,000 square foot Drill Hall and its period rooms by Gilded Age designers, the Armory enables artists to create, students to explore, and wide audiences to experience epic, adventurous work that cannot be done elsewhere in New York. The Armory has been lauded as "a playground for artists of outsize imaginations" (Wall Street Journal) with The New York Times declaring "few cultural institutions have been as adept at pushing the cultural FOMO button, triggering that 'fear of missing out' that New Yorkers hate"Park Avenue Armory.has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City." As with non-traditional programming, arts education has found a special niche at the Armory, using its unique assets - a magical ruine

TO RESTORE, RENOVATE AND REVITALIZE THE HISTORIC PARK AVENUE ARmory A CONTEMPORARY ARTS INStitution.

2017 ARTISTIC SEASON In 2017, new commissions and visionary re-stagings invited an international network of artists to explore their most complex visions. Highlights of the Wade Thompson Drill Hall season included: - The Hairy Ape (March - April 2017): Seven-time Olivier award-winner Richard Jones CBE adapted his celebrated Old Vic production of Eugene O'Neill's Hairy Ape for the Drill Hall. In the Drill Hall, the audience was seated in a Sulphur yellow bank surrounded by a huge turntable that moved the set pieces like the conveyer belt of an industrial assembly-line, a metaphor for the struggle between the working man and the industrial complex at the heart of the play. The brutish central character Yank was brilliantly played by Bobby Cannavale, whose performance earned an Obie Award and Drama Desk Nomination for Best Actor. The production was praised as "mesmerizing"ravishing" by Ben Brantley (New York Times), earning a total of eight Drama Desk Nominations - more than any other play in 2017. - FLEXN Evolution (May 18 - 21, 2017): Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray, Peter Sellars, and dance innovators from East New York responded to social justice issues through a deeply personal, evolving dance form. Through dance and pre-show conversations with local leaders, FLEXN EVOLUTION revisited the elements of the 2015 production but was "more intimate, but just as virtuosic, featuring a series of choreographed and improvisational pieces inspired in part by the need for social change" (New York Times). - Hansel & Gretel (June 7 - August 6, 2017): Pritzker Prize- winning architects, Herzog & De Meuron and artist/activist Ai Weiwei created a new commission for the Wade Thompson Drill Hall that explored the meaning of public space in our surveillance-laden world, inspired the story of Hansel and Gretel in which children lose their way in a space they know and trust. The work built on the artists' shared practice as designers (the Beijing Olympic Stadium, and "quite simply the best summer Serpentine Pavilion ever" according to Time-out London) and their deep interest in the public realm. The installation welcomed over 30,000 visitors to the Armory. - Blank Out (September 21 - 27, 2017): The Armory presented the North American premiere of a new chamber opera and 3D film created by composer and innovator Michel van der Aa. BLANK OUT is inspired by South African poet Ingrid Jonker and was performed by Soprano Miah Persson, alongside the recorded voice of Baritone Roderick Williams. The production earned high praise for the seamlessly integrated technical elements, with the New York Times claiming: "Mr. van der Aa is also a master - a full-out virtuoso - of mixed media. in wondrous technological strokes." - Rpons (October 6-7, 2017): The Wade Thompson Drill Hall has established a reputation for staging masterpieces of spatial music in the way they were meant to be heard. In October 2017, the Armory paid homage to Pierre Boulez with performances of Rpons that continue this tradition of spatial masterpieces in a setting that fulfills the original vision for the work. Performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain and conducted by Matthias Pintscher, this 45-minute complex and multi-layered work used space and digital techniques to alter the sonic experience in the room. Six soloists were stationed around the audience, who in turn surrounded the ensemble at the center. At the Armory, audience members listened to the piece in one location and then moved to another in the four sided seating arrangement to experience the music in another way. - A Room in India (December 5 - 20, 2017): Thtre du Soleil and its founder, theater icon Ariane Mnouchkine brought the North American premiere of their new work A Room in India (Une chambre en Inde) to the Thompson Arts Center at Park Avenue Armory. The work follows the adventures of a touring French theater company stranded in India without a director while the world around them falls into disarray. Created by 65 traveli

ARTS EDUCATION AT THE ARMORY Utilizing our magnificent historic building and the unique visual and performing arts programming that takes place within it, Park Avenue Armory's arts education program gives underserved New York City public school students from all five boroughs the opportunity to be immersed in the creative process of exceptional artists. The program has three major components: Production-Based Programming, Partnership Schools, and the Youth Corps internship program. In 2017, Production-based Programming reached nearly 5,000 students from underserved NYC public schools. Through production-based programming, students had an opportunity to see world-class performances like The Hairy Ape and A Room in India, with enthusiastic feedback from students, teachers, and artists. Blank Out composer and creator Michel van der Aa, wrote that one of the most memorable parts of his time at the Armory was the student matinee: "They came prepared, were completely absorbed by the work, focused, and gave us some great feedback! This is so important to do, these are our future audiences, our future makers." The Partner School Program offers curriculum enrichment at no cost to schools, focusing on underserved schools that lack access to art programs. It pairs teachers and administrators with Armory staff and Teaching Artists to create in-depth residencies, with up to 17 in-school workshops, detailed teaching materials, professional development for the teachers, and multiple visits to see artistic productions at the Armory. The residencies are tailored to each specific school's curriculum and needs. In 2017, Partner Schools includes: Williamsburg High School for Architecture and Design Brooklyn (WHSAD) and Fresh Creek Elementary School in East New York, MS 244: The New School for Leadership and the Arts (Bronx), PS 106: The Parkchester School (Bronx), Bronx Envision Academy, and Vanguard High School (Manhattan). The school year culminated in an annual "Evening of the Arts" event, when the school community comes to the Armory for a celebration and exhibition of coursework organized by the students. The Armory Youth Corps is a rigorous, closely-mentored, paid program that introduces underserved public school students to the creative process of artists of the highest caliber, encouraging them to explore the wonder of creative thinking. Youth Corps are fully integrated into the organization's operation and exposed to the full range and complexity of the Armory's unconventional artistic programming. Over the past year, the Youth Corps program has continued to offer five key initiatives for students to engage with artists and the creative process: 1) the Capstone Project, a term project that introduces students to the creative process as inspired by Armory productions and provides a foundation for their Youth Corps experience; 2) experience working directly with Armory artists, 3) assisting the Amory's master teaching artists to develop workshops and educational experiences for students and families 4) paid work as greeters and ushers during performances and exhibitions and participation in countless special projects and tasks with every department of the Armory; and 5) Youth Corps Ensemble, a performance-based residency program. In 2017 alone, Youth Corps met Bobby Cannavale, Richard Jones, Jacques Herzog, Pierre de Meuron, Ai Weiwei, and many others. The Armory has also begun to pilot new programs for Youth Corps after high school, including a year-round Student Advisory Board, a Teaching Apprentice Program, and a college persistence program. In 2017, 95 Youth Corps worked over 12,000 hours at the Armory and, of that group, 31 were students in this post-secondary phase. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION In 2017, the Armory completed its major infrastructure project, the construction of the new north core serving six levels of the head house from basement to fifth floor. This core provides two new elevators, a fire egress stair, catering spaces and
