Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory supports unconventional works in the performing and visual arts that cannot be fully realized in a traditional proscenium theater, concert hall, or white wall gallery. With its soaring, 55,000 square foot Drill Hall and its period rooms by Gilded Age designers, the Armory enables artists to create, students to explore, and wide audiences to experience epic, adventurous work that cannot be done elsewhere in New York. The Armory has been lauded as "a playground for artists of outsize imaginations" (Wall Street Journal) with The New York Times declaring "few cultural institutions have been as adept at pushing the cultural FOMO button, triggering that 'fear of missing out' that New Yorkers hate"Park Avenue Armory.has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City." As with non-traditional programming, arts education has found a special niche at the Armory, using its unique assets - a magical ruine

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

2018 ARTISTIC SEASON 2018 was an exciting year for performing arts at the Armory, drawing nearly 84,000 visitors, including over 5,000 NYC public schools attending for free. All productions sold out and earned rave reviews: - Yerma (3/23-4/21): Directed by Simone Stone and starring Billie Piper, the play updated Lorca's 1934 play to contemporary London and was praised as "One of the most harrowing - and compelling - productions you are ever likely to see" (Ben Brantley, New York Times). Yerma earned a Special Citation from the Obie Awards, two Drama League nominations, four Drama Desk Nominations, and was named one of "The 10 Best Plays and Musicals of 2018" by Time Magazine. - MYRIAD (5/22-5/24): The Armorys second collaboration with the Redbull Music Academy invited diverse audiences to enjoy the Drill Hall as an environment for audio-visual presentations by innovators in pop music. The production featured the world premiere of Oheohtrix Point Nevers MYRIAD, augmented by a layered scenic and video design. - The Let Go (6/6 7/1): Nick Caves The Let Go invited diverse COMMUNITIES OF NEW YORK TO "LET GO" OF FRUSTRATIONS IN A VIBRANT "DANCE HALL/TOWN HALL." THE SPACE WAS ACTIVATED BY OVER 200 FEET OF MYLAR CURTAIN streamers, with events throughout the month that included: a Freedom Ball costume competition, Up Right performances featuring Caves signature soundsuits and music from the Sing Harlem Choir, installation hours with 90+ community groups from around the city, and an Artist Response Evening featuring Reggie (Regg Roc) Gray and the DREAM Ring, Francesca Harper, Nona Hendrix, and Helga Davis. - The Damned (7/17-7/28): Tony Award-winning director Ivo Van Hove restaged his chilling adaptation of Luchino Viscontis The Damned for the Armory, telling the story of the powerful German family the Essenbecks and their violent internal struggle for power and alliance with rising Nazism. The production marked the first New York performance by the renowned Comdie-Franaise in over a decade and was praised AS "ASTONISHING! IT CRACKLES WITH IMMEDIACY. IVO VAN HOVE'S PRODUCTION SCORCHES." (NEW YORK TIMES). - The Six Brandenburg Concertos (10/1 10/6): The Six Brandenburg Concertos was a new production conceived by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. De Keersmaekers staging of Bachs six Brandenburg Concertos, was performed by her dance company Rosas and acclaimed Early Music ensemble B`Rock Orchestra, and fulfilled a decades-long dream to create choreography that embodies Bachs masterpiece. According to the New York TIMES, THE PRODUCTION "SHED LIGHT ON THE 'BRANDENBURGS THIS IS A READING OF THE REVOLUTIONARY CONCERTOS AS JOYOUS YOUTHFUL AND BORDERLINE IMPROVISATORY." - The Head and the Load (12/4 12/15): Led by multi-disciplinary artist William Kentridge with composers Philip Miller and Thuthuka Sibisi, this new co-commission with Tate Modern and 14-18 NOW exposed the story of the African porters and carriers who served the British, French and German military forces during the First World War. ARTS EDUCATION AT THE ARMORY Utilizing our magnificent historic building and the unique visual and performing arts programming that takes place within it, Park Avenue Armorys arts education program gives underserved New York City public school students from all five boroughs the opportunity to be immersed in the creative process of exceptional artists. The Arts Education Program has three main components: (1) Production-based Programming, in which students attend major productions of music, theater, dance and visual art, and participate in pre- and post-visit workshops with the Armorys talented corps of teaching artists; (2) Partner School Program, in which deeper relationships with schools are created through attendance at productions, in-school residencies and end-of-term events at the Armory; and (3) the Armory Youth Corps, a paid and closely mentored internship program focusing on students from underserved NYC public schools. Armory Arts Education programs are offered at no cost to students and schools and are developed in alignment with the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards and the NYC Blueprint for the Arts. In 2018: Over 5,000 NYC public school students attended FREE student matinees and participated in production-based programming; 8 Partner Schools received in-school residencies connecting the school curriculum with Armory productions and other resources; and nearly 100 Youth Corps interns worked over 13,000 paid hours. The Armory has also begun to pilot new programs for Youth Corps after high school, including a year-round Student Advisory Board, a Teaching Apprentice Program, Advanced Internships and Job Training, and a college persistence program. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION In 2018, we launched the first half of the Wade Thompson Drill Hall floor replacement project. The first 11,000 square feet completed are very solidly built and are a dramatic improvement on both the aesthetics of the space and its functionality. Preparation for the August 2019 phase of installation is well underway and the completed floor will include 8,000 SF of wood milled by artist Theaster Gates with his Chicago workforce. Upon completion of the floor in 2019, Gates will help celeBRATE ITS REOPENING WITH "BLACK ARTISTS RETREAT 2019: SONIC IMAGINATION," INCLUDING A PUBLIC CELEBRATION WITH ROLLER SKATING, DJ'S AND PERFORMERS, AND OTHER SPECIAL GUESTS AMIDST AN INSTALLATION OF SOME OF THE ARTIST'S FAMOUS "HOUSEBERGS." ALSO IN 2018, THE ARMORY SECURED ITS FINAL CERTIFICATE OF OCCUPANCY AND COMPLETED DESIGNS FOR TWO UPCOMPING PROJECTS: THE ADDITION OF A BRAND NEW REHEARSAL ROOM ON THE 5TH FLOOR OF THE BUILDING AND THE RENOVATION OF THE EXTERIOR MASONRY OF THE WADE THOMPSON DRILL HALL.
