Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Part American palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory supports unconventional works in the performing and visual arts that cannot be fully realized in a traditional proscenium theater, concert hall, or white wall gallery. With its soaring, 55,000 square foot Drill Hall and its period rooms by Gilded Age designers, the Armory enables artists to create, students to explore, and wide audiences to experience epic, adventurous work that cannot be done elsewhere in New York. The Armory has been lauded as "a playground for artists of outsize imaginations" (Wall Street Journal) with The New York Times declaring "few cultural institutions have been as adept at pushing the cultural FOMO button, triggering that 'fear of missing out' that New Yorkers hate"Park Avenue Armory.has arrived as the most important new cultural institution in New York City." As with non-traditional programming, arts education has found a special niche at the Armory, using its unique assets - a magical ruine

To restore, renovate and revitalize the historic park avenue aromory a contemporary arts insitituion.

Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A

2016 ARTISTIC SEASON In 2016, new commissions and visionary restagings invited an international network of artists to explore their most complex visions in the Drill Hall: De Materie (Mar. 23-30): Heiner Goebbels acclaimed production of Louis Andriessens De Materie, a 4-part non-narrative opera, became an extraordinary visual and sonic experience in the Drill Hall with a stunning scenic design, huge cast, the International Contemporary Ensemble performing on a moving platform, 100 sheep, tents, and floating zeppelins. The production was on the "Best of 2016" Lists for the New York Times and the New Yorker and was hailed as an "audaciously imaginative production...The Park Avenue Armory, once again taking advantage of its awesome space, is offering a powerful performance" (New York Times). Hopelessness (May 18-19): In May, Park Avenue Armory and Red Bull Music Academy presented the world premiere of Anohnis Hopelessness, a moving and politically charged audio-visual spectacle by the celebrated singer, composer, and visual artist. Returning to the Armory after her performance in The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic in 2013 (as Antony Hegarty), Anohni has redefined herself and created a powerful work in which image, perception, and identity defy traditional boundaries. An Occupation of Loss (Sept. 13-25): This monumental work by Taryn Simon explored grief and mourning through sculpture, sound, and performance, featuring more than 30 professional mourners representing 15 different cultures from around the globe. Lamentations were performed within 11 concrete monoliths, designed with OMA, weighing a total of 675,000 pounds and each towering 46 feet tall, simultaneously creating an intimate experience and a cacophony of collective sound. According to New York Magazine, "this intense listening in the dark releases sorrow, absolves, soothes...letting us feel the pulse of things bigger than we are, yet things we are composed of." Circle Map (Oct. 13-14): the New York Philharmonic conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen performed works by Kaija Saariaho that fulfilled the composers dream of a production in the Drill Hall. The program was staged by Pierre Audi and included: the New York premiere of Circle Map, inspired by 13th-century Persian poet Rumi; the New York premiere of Dom La Vrai Sens, composed for clarinetist Kari Krikku, moving through the audience as he performed; the U.S. premiere of Lumire et Pesanteur; and Lonh, sung by soprano Jennifer Zetlan with electronic score. Anthony Tommasini wrote in the New York Times that "when Pierre Audi, the new artistic director of the Park Avenue Armory, suggested that the New York Philharmonic play a Saariaho program there, the composer embraced it...This vast space proved ideal for the 90-minute program" In December, the Armory presented Manifesto, a multi-channel cinematic experience by Julian Rosefeldt, with Cate Blanchett assuming 13 different characters with extraordinary precision and grace: "if the art world gave out Oscars, Cate Blanchett should win for her tour de force of starring roles in 'Manifesto' - toweringly ambitious...to sit and watch or to move among such intense, vvaried performances by one actor is thrilling" (New York Times). Recital Series and Artists Studio 2016 marked another major achievement with the restoration of the Veterans Room by Louis C. Tiffany and Associated Artists. The room opened in March with a new Artists Studio series curated by pianist and composer Jason Moran and inspired by the improvisational, collaborative and eclectic forces behind the original design of the room. The New York Times wrote about the opening performances: "...it was a block of music that made you think, as the room does: Take note. Listen deeply. The rest of the world is not like this." In the Board of Officers Room, the Recital Series continued to offer an exquisite, intimate counterpart to the spectacular scale of the Drill Hall season. In 2016, the series added more performances th

The Armory Youth Corps is a rigorous, closely-mentored, paid program that introduces underserved public school students to the creative process of artists of the highest caliber, encouraging them to explore the wonder of creative thinking. Youth Corps are fully integrated into the organizations operation and exposed to the full range and complexity of the Armorys unconventional artistic programming. Over the past year, the Youth Corps program has continued to offer five key initiatives that allowed more than 90 students to engage with artists and the creative process: 1) the Capstone Project, a term project that introduces students to the creative process as inspired by Armory productions and provides a foundation for their Youth Corps experience; 2) experience working directly with Armory artists, 3) assisting the Amorys master teaching artists to develop workshops and educational experiences for students and families 4) paid work as greeters and ushers during performances and exhibitions and participation in countless special projects and tasks with every department of the Armory; and 5) Youth Corps Ensemble, a performance-based residency program. Through workshops, conversations, and presentations with Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed, Academy Award-Nominated Singer and Composer Anohni, MacArthur "Genius" Jason Moran, and visual artist Julian Rosefeldt students engaged directly with the artistic process, including the level of skill and imagination, dedication, and discipline required to complete projects in all art forms. Youth Corps members applied these experiences in the many facets of their work with Armory artists, staff, Teaching Artists, and their peers. DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION In 2016, the Armory re-opened the restored Veterans Room, one of the only surviving interiors by Louis C. Tiffany and Co., Associated Artists, in the world and one of the most beautiful historic rooms in America. The room is now exquisitely restored to the grandeur imbued by its original visionary designers: the multi-hued ceilings will regain their redwood, gold, and pewter color, with oriental style decoration; the re-papered walls will shimmer under the glow of restored historic lighting; the pristine Tiffany glasswork in the windows and on the mantle will sparkle; and the repaired oak woodwork will glow showing the intricate carvings and the original finish. The 1880 room was a masterwork and, finally, after decades of decay, dirt, and damage, we are able to fully appreciate its stunning, Gilded Age artistry. The restoration also enables new opportunities for artistic programming through the rooms new use as an intimate space for multi-disciplinary performance. In 2016, the Armory also completed 80% of the renovation of the new north stair, elevator and vertical distribution core that spans the six floors of the building from basement to the fifth floor. The new core contains two new elevators, a fire stair, catering spaces and handicapped restrooms on the first and second floors, (26) new restroom fixtures on the mezzanine level and various new storage spaces. The project is set to be complete in March 2017.

Financial Statement Notes

Income Tax Uncertainties

The Armory is subject to the provisions of the Financial Accounting Standards Board's (The "FASB") Codification ("ASC") Topic 740, Income Taxes, as it relates to accounting and reporting for uncertainty in income taxes. Because of the Armory's general tax-exempt status, Management believes that ASC Topic 740 has not had, and is not anticipated to have, a material impact on the Armory's financial statements.

Schedule D, Part V, Endowment Funds

The armory's endowment consist of a donor-restricted fund to support the charitable purposes and activities of the armory.
