Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Not In Our Town (NIOT), the core program of The Working Group, works to guide, support and inspire individuals and communities to work together to stop hate and build safe, inclusive cities and schools. Storytelling that foregrounds solutions and encourages local action is central to Not In Our Town's strategy. Practical action guidelines, coaching, convening, and engagement tools for communities, schools and law enforcement are combined with documentary PBS films and online media that support local efforts to prevent hate, bullying and intolerance, and encourage all residents to participate in public life.

Not In Our Town (NIOT), the core program of The Working Group, has worked for more than 25 years with local communities to fight hate and bias and to create inclusive environments for all. NIOTs fundamental conviction is that working at the local level - where innovative methods can be tested, evaluated, shaped and shared - is critical to developing solutions to hate, bias and bigotry. NIOT focuses on intersectional coalition and community building at the local level. NIOT collaborates with local leaders and activists to connect diverse communities targeted by hate with leaders and key institutions to mount an effective response to hate, but more vitally to build the connections, alliances and systems for action that will lead to hate and bias prevention.

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: For more than a decade, Not In Our School has inspired students of all ages to develop and share innovative ways to resist bullying and promote an atmosphere of acceptance and inclusion. The Not In Our School videos, activities and resources on our website showcase the immense capacity, energy, and creativity of young people who are creating new ways to make their schools safe for everyone. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: The Gold Star Cities program provides guidelines for cities that take specific actions and implement policies to build an inclusive community. As NIOT continues to advance prevention of hate crimes, the organization developed the framework for Hate and Bias Action Teams, a model for helping communities improve hate crime reporting and response led by diverse community stakeholders. We began a collaboration with Novato, California, a Bay Area community committed to creating an inclusive climate and the first in the area to implement online hate incident reporting and the first, in collaboration with NIOT, to develop a Hate and Bias Incident Response Team. NIOT developed this new program and created a concept paper and outline for implementation in five pilot cities across the U.S.

IRS990/Desc0Media Production - Storytelling and media are central to NIOTs mission, not only to build awareness about the dangers of bigotry and bias, but more vitally, to provide communities with inspiring models for action and the possibility for change. Through documentary filmmaking, NIOT captures the stories of real-world community action in response to hate crimes. These films are then used to build awareness and spark positive change, providing living examples of how communities can stand up to hate. Throughout 2021, NIOT was in post-production on Repairing the World: Stories from the Tree of Life, a public television documentary and community engagement project that chronicles the courageous response of the Pittsburgh community in the aftermath of the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history at the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018. The film follows the families of the victims, Pittsburgh residents, and civic leaders as they examine their vulnerabilities and the impact of anti-Semitism, racism, hate speech, and gun violence. The film will be utilized domestically and internationally by community groups, activists, and schools. NIOT.org offers over 100 free films and action guides for anyone seeking advice about how to stop hate and bullying. Specialized resource centers were created for educators and law enforcement groups at Notinourschool.org and NIOT.org/cops.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Not In Our Town (NIOT), the core program of The Working Group, has worked for more than 25 years with local communities to fight hate and bias and to create inclusive environments for all.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0United Against Hate - In partnership with city, civic, school leaders, and elected officials, NIOT helped expand the fourth annual week of action, held in November. NIOT developed the United Against Hate Week campaign in collaboration with city and elected leaders in the Bay Area in 2018. Our partnerships with cities are most prominently exhibited by United Against Hate Week, a devoted week of action connecting local government, schools, and residents; and by LAvsHate, the Los Angeles County-led initiative to improve hate crime reporting. In 2021, NIOT released short films during United Against Hate Week that spotlighted AAPI artists and activists in California. NIOT first developed the campaign in collaboration with city and elected leaders in the Bay Area in 2018. UAHW virtual events featured public forums and discussions focused on addressing and preventing hate crimes. In 2021, more than 100 communities participated in the UAHW across the nation, including 42 California communities. Film screenings at schools and town halls with facilitated conversations and new short films spotlighting community activists were held in Novembers week of action to stop hate.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: For more than a decade, Not In Our School has inspired students of all ages to develop and share innovative ways to resist bullying and promote an atmosphere of acceptance and inclusion.
