Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Not In Our Town (NIOT), the core program of The Working Group, works to guide, support and inspire individuals and communities to work together to stop hate and build safe, inclusive cities and schools. Storytelling that foregrounds solutions and encourages local action is central to Not In Our Town's strategy. Practical action guidelines, coaching, convening, and engagement tools for communities, schools and law enforcement are combined with documentary PBS films and online media that support local efforts to prevent hate, bullying and intolerance, and encourage all residents to participate in public life.

Not In Our Town (NIOT) is a movement to stop hate, address bullying, and build safe, inclusive communities for all. NIOT's approach is based on bolstering locally driven actions where change can be felt most acutely by those who are targets of hate and bigotry. NIOT combines documentary storytelling with training, social media, and organizing tools to help local leaders build vibrant, diverse cities and towns, where all are safe, included, and respected. NIOT offers local communities guidance through online coaching and tools that were developed through 25 years of collective intelligence from diverse leaders that make up our communities, including people of color; LGBTQx; indigenous and immigrant people; civic, school, and faith leaders; and law enforcement leaders.

IRS990/Desc0FILM AND MEDIA - NIOT films provide a road map for communities who are seeking ways to respond to and prevent hate and bullying. NIOT is currently in post-production on Stories from the Tree of Life, a public television documentary and community engagement project that chronicles the courageous response of the Pittsburgh community in the aftermath of the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in U.S. history at the Tree of Life synagogue in 2018. The film follows the families of the victims, Pittsburgh residents, and civic leaders as they examine their vulnerabilities and the impact of anti-Semitism, racism, hate speech, and gun violence.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Not In Our Town (NIOT), the core program of The Working Group, works to guide, support and inspire individuals and communities to work together to stop hate and build safe, inclusive cities and schools. Through ongoing relationships, NIOT provides hate and violence response/prevention strategies to more than 400 communities and schools. As a small organization with a large scale mission and reach, and in this unprecedented year, we were called upon to support a growing number of cities, leaders, and activists facing emerging threats and crises from the upsurge of hate.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0NOT IN OUR TOWN - Throughout 2020, NIOT engaged with local and national partners to serve a significantly larger number of communities, and continued to provide hate and violence response/prevention strategies to more than 400 communities and schools. As a small organization with a large scale mission and reach, and in this unprecedented year, we were called upon to support a growing number of cities, leaders, and activists facing emerging threats and crises from the upsurge of hate. In the course of this watershed year, 152 communities requested guidance, support, and resources from NIOT. In 2020, our online channels surged with a 153% increase in traffic to NIOT.org and an over 1000% increase in viewers to our YOUTUBE videos. Throughout 2020, NIOT worked to maximize our impact by launching our Virtual Conversations series to convene community conversations. Key leaders who are civic and community representatives, educators, and diverse local activists from 44 states have been engaging in these opportunities. In Novato, CA, NIOT has been working with the community group to develop a Hate & Bias Response Team that will be a model for other communities across the nation. NIOT is a cornerstone partner with the Los Angeles County Human Relations Committee and sixteen civil rights organizations for the LAvsHate campaign, a new initiative seeking to improve hate crime reporting and prevention for the 10 million people of Los Angeles County. Funded by the County of Los Angeles, this campaign provides models for actions by counties and municipalities to improve hate crime reporting and response. As core consultants of this campaign, NIOT worked with the 211 LA Center to provide videos and support material for hate victim responders on staff and with community partners.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0United Against Hate Week - In a partnership with city, civic, school leaders, and elected officials, NIOT helped expand the third annual UAHW, held November 30-December 6. NIOT first developed the campaign in collaboration with city and elected leaders in the Bay Area in 2018. UAHW virtual events featured public forums and discussions focused on addressing and preventing hate crimes. Fifty-four cities and counties across 7 states partnered with residents and schools for a week of anti-hate action. The most significant expansion and adoption of this annual civic action campaign occured as LAvsHate adopted UAHW as part of its ongoing program to bolster hate crime reporting and prevention.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0Gold Star Cities - The Gold Star Cities program provides guidelines for cities that take specific actions and implement policies to build an inclusive community. As NIOT continues to advance prevention of hate crimes, we developed the framework for Gold Star Cities (GSC), a model for building cohesion and sustainable action led by diverse community stakeholders. We began a collaboration with our pilot Gold Star City in Novato, California, a Bay Area community committed to creating an inclusive climate and the first in the area to implement online hate incident reporting and the first, in collaboration with NIOT, to develop a Hate and Bias Incident Response Team.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1Not In Our School - Not in Our School (NIOS) offers free films and online resources for teachers, students and administrators on how to address bullying and intolerance and create inclusive and identity-safe school environments for all children. Not In Our School presents workshops and guidance for teachers, students, and school leaders on how to respond to hate incidents. A Not In Our Town anti-bullying online film festival presented 30 short films and classroom discussion guides for teachers and students.
