“In 2023, the ocean exploration trust completed 13 multi-disciplinary expeditions that explored poorly known underwater environments over the course of 229 days, including one shore-based mission at wakulla springs, and 12 expeditions aboard e/v nautilus in the pacific. The e/v nautilus began its season with a shakedown expedition in the main hawaiian islands, and then conducted a series of expeditions focused on seafloor mapping, rov explorations, and integrating emerging exploration technologies, work that was conducted around british columbia, kingman reef, palmyra atoll, johnston atoll, jarvis island, and the northwestern hawaiian islands. Collectively, 2023 expeditions mapped over 183,000 square kilometers of seafloor, and completed 85 successful rov dives and 68 other vehicle deployments that surveyed a wide diversity of habitats and geological features, including seamounts, ridges, hydrothermal vents, caves, and world war ii wrecks, among others. Expeditions in 2023 were funded by noaa ocean exploration via the ocean exploration cooperative institute, ocean networks canada, office of naval research, bureau of ocean energy management, and defense pow/mia accounting agency. Throughout the planning and execution of expeditions, the ocean exploration trust worked closely with government agencies and the scientific community to ensure that expedition activities address science and management priorities. Expeditions took advantage of e/v nautilus telepresence capabilities and included extensive education and outreach activities to reach audiences of all ages.”
