FORM 990 - ORGANIZATION'S MISSION

Capacitar international provides holistic health and wellness education for people suffering from stress or trauma as a result of civil, domestic and political violence, natural disasters, illness, such as cancer and hiv/aids, and poverty both within the u.s. And internationally. It produces and, where applicable, produces and translates training manuals, dvds and other learning materials.

International program: in 2019 capacitar international teams facilitated over 100 workshops in 23 countries and in 4 states in the us with over 3,000 participants: in the united states,(california, texas, ohio and arizona), canada, uganda, tanzania, dr congo, south sudan, haiti, japan, indonesia, israel, palestine, scotland, england, wales, ireland, germany, mexico, guatemala, nicaragua, el salvador, panama, rwanda, the philippines. Participants are either grassroots leaders or professionals who work with communities and organizations who are committed to healing and transforming people who are impacted by stress, political and domestic violence, natural disasters, trauma and illness (cancer, hiv/aids, and disabilities). Manuals, dvds, and training materials have been produced, published and translated. New trainings were offered in zwochau, eastern germany, sponsored by missio for those doing outreach with refugees. A training was also offered in the british virgin islands for survivors of the recent hurricane who had lost homes and businesses. Capacitar celebrated its 10th anniversary of work in wales; and its 15th anniversary of work in argentina. Publication and translation of materials: capacitar' manual, refugee accompaniment, for use with refugees and those who walk with them, focuses on trauma healing and self-care methods, along with the application of practices in different settings. The refugee manual has been translated into french, arabic, spanish, and now in german for international work to respond to the growing need of refugees. Other advanced training materials have been translated into german, french, arabic, hebrew, dari, japanese, korean, haitian creole, indonesian and spanish. There are now over 60 short videos of capacitar practices on youtube. A video, the story of capacitar, was completed and distributed to national and international teams.

General program: in 2019 capacitar programs nationally and internationally served over 3,000 people from 23 countries and 4 us states. Because of the popular education methodology and multiplier impact, many thousands more received the benefit of learning the capacitar practices in all of the countries served. In may, the capacitar founder/director ws a key presenter at a trauma conference sponsered by aachen university in germany, featuring holistic approaches to trauma healing. The conference involved over 100 participants, professors and students from the school of social work, sociology and psychology. Disaster response and gender violence healing: trauma trainings continued in japan with mentoring of locals to continue outreach. Work in japan continued in areas impacted by the tsunami and fukushima, with workshops for women, families and children dealing with the trauma. In african countries-dr congo, rwanda, tanzania, south sudan and uganda-trauma healing trainings were offered to women and youth who are dealing with trauma and gender violence. Trainings with the barbara ford peace center in quiche', guatemala, focused on formation of 60 mayan health promoters working in their communities to heal gender violence. Trainings in refugee accompaniment continued to be offered in the us-in cleveland, oh; in tucson, az and at the texas, mexico border in el paso and ciudad juarez. Gender violence healing: in african countries-dr congo, rwanda, tanzania, south sudan-trauma healing trainings were offered to women and youth who deal with trauma and gender violence. Trainings at the barbara ford peace center in quiche', guatemala, continued focusing on formation of 60 mayan health promoters working in their communitiers to heal gender violence. In juarez and chihuahua, mexico, trainings continued with community leaders working with people impacted by human rights abuse, gender violence and with families of the disappeared.

National program: califonia: in 2019 capacitar offered the following programs in california. Trainings at holy spirit retreat center, encino, ca, with participants coming from local organizations, work with the elderly and disabled, schools, teachers, mental health programs, women's groups, youth at risk, work with refugees and indigenous people, and outreach to refugees, immigrants and the needy in southern california. Workshopes were also offered at presentation center in watts, wellness works (serving veterans) in glendale, and at oakwood in atherton. Trainings continued at the us/mexico border (el paso/juarez) coordinated by capacitar en la frontera for persons working to heal the violence and trauma of the region, work in detention centers and with refugees. Trainings were offered in tucson az, sponsored by catalina rotary focused on self-care for nurses and professionals working with children and youth at risk. Study groups continue to meet and do outreach in tucson. Refugee accompaniment: in el paso and ciudad juarez, teams continue to be trained to respond to the growing needs of churches, community groups and centers dealing with refugee relief and support. Ongoing regular workshops are offered to men and women detainees at the el paso processing and detention center. Trainings have also been held in tucson, az for those working with refugee outreach and in detention centers. New trainings were offered in cleveland, ohio, for the catholic diocesan office of refugee response doing outreach to refugees and immigrants. The refugee accompaniment manual, based on the experience of team members from capacitar en la frontera, is now in german, french, spanish, english and arabic, for use many countries.

Significant anniversaries and awards: capacitar founder/director received the prestigious wooden ethical leadership award from the ukleja center for ethical leadership at long beach state university. Over the past year and a half, capacitar has celebrated significant anniversaries in different countries: the 30th anniversary of capacitar international; the 10th anniversary in scotland; the 10th anniversary in wales; the 15th anniversary in argentina; and preparing for the 10th anniversary in panama. Education and training materials: advanced training materials continue to be developed and translated for work in many countries. Capacitar methods continue to be incorporated in human rights self-care manuals, and materials for caregivers.

CAPACITAR CELEBRATED ITS 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF WORK IN WALES; AND ITS 15TH ANNIVERSARY OF WORK IN ARGENTINA. PUBLICATION AND TRANSLATION OF MATERIALS: CAPACITAR' MANUAL, REFUGEE ACCOMPANIMENT, FOR USE WITH REFUGEES AND THOSE WHO WALK WITH THEM, FOCUSES ON TRAUMA HEALING AND SELF-CARE METHODS, ALONG WITH THE APPLICATION OF PRACTICES IN DIFFERENT SETTINGS.
