Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of mcip and its public school affiliate, chec, is to strive to become a model professional learning community that respects and responds to the diverse needs of our underserved students by preparing them for the academic rigors of college and as leaders in the quest for social justice. A professional learning community is a collaborative academic environment in which the administrative staff and teachers in a school continuously seek and share learning and then act on what they learn. The goal is to enhance their effectiveness as professionals to benefit student education. The results of this research-based approach is that students experience decreased dropout rate and fewer classes "skipped", lower rates of absenteeism, increased learning that is distributed more equitably in a smaller sized school, greater academic gains than in traditional schools, and smaller achievement gaps between students from different backgrounds.

Entire student body. It teaches students that teen pregnancy is a complex issue, and addresses it with sexuality education, self-esteem building and leadership skills. Teachers promote diversionary activities and emphasize great academic achievement. Students learn through classroom instruction, peer education, mentoring, career development, community service learning, after-school activities, parental involvement and mental health support. Students learn skills for life, not just for school. Prevention, diversion and intervention - mcip's year-round program prevents negative behavior by providing at-risk students with before, during and after-school leadership and team-building strategies, outreach support, academic and career mentoring, street law education, male responsibility instruction, conflict resolution education and substance abuse prevention. There's no admonishment - just advancement. Scholarship gala - mcip strongly supports students' quests for higher education. An early intervention-tracking program helps students earn scholarship funds from 9th grade through their senior year. However, mcip generates the largest funds for scholarships for the senior class through the gala - the fundraising event of the year. Mcip board of directors work with the schools' leadership team to create a memorable event that lays the ground work for many bright futures.

IRS990/MissionDesc0THE MISSION OF MCIP AND ITS PUBLIC SCHOOL AFFILIATE, CHEC, IS TO STRIVE TO BECOME A MODEL PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY THAT RESPECTS AND RESPONDS TO THE DIVERSE NEEDS OF OUR UNDERSERVED STUDENTS BY PREPARING THEM FOR THE ACADEMIC RIGORS OF COLLEGE AND AS LEADERS IN THE QUEST FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0EDUCATION PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS - PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE - MCIP IS KEENLY AWARE THAT TEACHER QUALITY AND EFFECTIVE TEACHING HAS THE GREATEST POTENTIAL TO IMPACT STUDENT LEARNING AND THAT ACHIEVEMENT IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO TEACHER COMPETENCE. THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE PROVIDES TEACHERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS AND CONTENT KNOWLEDGE BY BRINGING IN SUBJECT EXPERTS TO EXPOSE FACULTY TO CUTTING EDGE INDUSTRY BEST PRACTICES, TO FACILITATE COLLECTIVE AND DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF NEW STANDARDS LIKE THE COMMON CORE AND TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF TEACHERS CERTIFIED IN THEIR CONTENT AREAS. TEEN PREGNANCY PREVENTION - THIS PROGRAM IS OFFERED YEAR-ROUND TO THE ENTIRE STUDENT BODY.
