“The draft return is reviewed by the president, and the outside accountant. Comments are discussed with the outside cpa and 990 preparer and any necessary changes are made to the draft return. A final copy is provided to the board members prior to filing.”
“During the year, all board members signed a written statement that they have read the conflict of interest policy and have disclosed all possible conflicts.”
“Outside compatibility data was obtained as a base to determine the reasonableness of the executive director and the president's salary that was approved by the board. Form 990, part vi, line b, line 15b: this was answered no as there were no officers or key employees defined in form 990 instructions that were compensated”
“The organization's governing documents and conflict of interest policy are available upon request.”
“In 2024, habits of waste launched our imperfect environmentalist movement in conjunction with the release of our founder sheila morovati's first book, imperfect environmentalist: how to reduce waste and create change for a better planet. Imperfect environmentalism is a movement rooted in social science and human behavior research that seeks to fight climate change and rising climate anxiety through influencing micro and macro actions and values. This movement responds to the rising concern that individuals are incapable of making a difference against climate change, despite more people than ever feeling its effects. Imperfect environmentalists are people who may not identify as full-fledged environmentalists, but are willing to help by living more sustainably "most" of the time. This helps individuals shift their mindset from "i'm only one person" to "i can start the ripple effect for change." our existing campaigns continued to create impactful change on a global level in 2024. Some highlights of our work include collaborations with major studios and films through our lights, camera, plastic? Campaign, updates to our 8 meals app, and amazon changing their shipping practices to align with our ship greener tenets. We are also continuing to increase our impact by the numbers, reaching over 1.5 billion pieces of single use plastic cutlery diverted from the waste stream in 2024, 53 new municipalities that have passed cut out cutlery legislation, and 23 million crayons (since inception) collected for students across the globe. Habits of waste also underwent a rebrand this year, a necessary investment in the organization to honor the past success we've achieved and position ourselves to create even greater success for the future. Our organization also gained key endorsements for our future work in the form of joining the united nations civil society conference and collaborating with behavioral research powerhouse rare and the world economic forum (wef). We are proud to be an organization vetted and recommended by the united nations for the impactful work we do for the planet, and to be part of rare and the wef's network of venerated organizations.”
“In 2024, habits of waste launched a new program service through our ship greener campaign. This initiative secured amazon's commitment to remove plastic pillows from packaging and formed a partnership with ups to help small businesses reduce shipping waste. This program targets shipping industry waste at scale, expanding our impact beyond food service into e-commerce and logistics.”
“On the prior year return the net assets without donor restriction and with donor restriction balances were reported as $635,912 and $164,547 respectively. During the year ended december 31, 2024 it was determined that these balances were incorrect, and the balances in the beginning of year column have been restated to reflect the correct balances.”
“Beginning of year amounts for lines 1(a) and 2(a) have been reclassified to conform with the current year's presentation.”
“The organization is a nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of california and, as such, is exempt from federal and state income taxes under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3) and corresponding state provisions. Generally accepted accounting principles provide accounting and disclosure guidance about positions taken by an organization in its tax returns that might be uncertain. Management has considered its tax positions and believes that all of the positions taken by the organization in its federal and state exempt organization tax returns are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination. The organization's returns are subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities, generally for three and four years, respectively, after they are filed.”

AND BEYOND PROGRAM: OUR LIGHTS, CAMERA, PLASTIC AND BEYOND CAMPAIGN CONTINUED TO FLOURISH IN 2024 THROUGH LANDMARK COLLABORATIONS AND AWARDS. THE CAMPAIGN WAS FEATURED AT THE HOLLYWOOD CLIMATE SUMMIT AND WAS ALSO HONORED WITH AN ANTHEM AWARD FOR INNOVATION IN NONPROFIT SOCIAL CHANGE CAMPAIGNS. WE HAVE NOW BROUGHT OUR PROGRAMMING TO ALL MAJOR FILM AND TELEVISION STUDIOS, AND WERE THRILLED TO GO DEEPER WITH CASE STUDIES CREATED FOR FILM PROJECTS SUCH AS "ABIGAIL" VIA UNIVERSAL PICTURES' GREENER LIGHTS PROGRAM AS WELL AS A CASE STUDY FOR "SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES" VIA PARAMOUNT STUDIOS. WE ALSO HAVE THE SUPPORT OF HBO AND WARNER BROTHERS FOR OUR EFFORTS TO REPLACE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS WITH REUSABLE ALTERNATIVES. (CONT. SCH. O)THE CAMPAIGN ALSO HAS A COMPOUNDING EFFECT WITH EACH TV SHOW AND FILM WE TAKE PART IN. THE CHAMELEON EFFECT, THROUGH WHICH WE AS A SOCIETY SUBTLY MIMIC THE BEHAVIOR OF THOSE AROUND US, CAN NOW TAKE PLACE FOR GOOD IN FILM AND TELEVISION WHEN WE CREATE SLEEK AND ENVIABLE GREEN FUTURES ON SCREEN. TAKING ACTION IS AS SIMPLE AS MAKING SURE THERE IS NO UNNECESSARY SINGLE USE PLASTIC THAT APPEARS ON SCREEN.ADDITIONALLY, WE ARE PROUD TO GUIDE GUILDS SUCH AS IATSE, THE DIRECTORS GUILD, THE WRITERS GUILD AND THE PRODUCERS GUILD TO HELP MEMBERS BRING LIGHTS, CAMERA, PLASTIC? TO THEIR PRODUCTIONS WITH A GOAL TO GO ENTIRELY PLASTIC FREE ON SCREEN. |

| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 0 | IN 2024, HABITS OF WASTE LAUNCHED OUR IMPERFECT ENVIRONMENTALIST MOVEMENT IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE RELEASE OF OUR FOUNDER SHEILA MOROVATI'S FIRST BOOK, IMPERFECT ENVIRONMENTALIST: HOW TO REDUCE WASTE AND CREATE CHANGE FOR A BETTER PLANET. WE ARE PROUD TO BE AN ORGANIZATION VETTED AND RECOMMENDED BY THE UNITED NATIONS FOR THE IMPACTFUL WORK WE DO FOR THE PLANET, AND TO BE PART OF RARE AND THE WEF'S NETWORK OF VENERATED ORGANIZATIONS. |
| IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt | 1 | IN 2024, HABITS OF WASTE LAUNCHED A NEW PROGRAM SERVICE THROUGH OUR SHIP GREENER CAMPAIGN. THIS PROGRAM TARGETS SHIPPING INDUSTRY WASTE AT SCALE, EXPANDING OUR IMPACT BEYOND FOOD SERVICE INTO E-COMMERCE AND LOGISTICS. |
