Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Our mission is to create collective change and impactful policies, with a focus on waste reduction, for a healthier, more sustainable future. Our original organization crayon collection, now a program of habits of waste, also lives out this commitment to sustainability.

Crayon Collection, Inc. focuses on using the collection and reallocation of crayons to create a social shift from a culture of international wastefulness to a mindful culture within communities that is supportive of teachers and students, art education and the environment. Our model is simple but revolutionary: we ask restaurants and hotels that offer free crayons to children when they dine, along with community-based groups, to collect gently used crayons and then we redistribute them to the neediest of classrooms across the U.S. through our partnership with the National Head Start Association (NHSA) and USA.org. Given that teachers spend an average of $750 out of pocket for basic supplies, our repurposed crayons meet a crucial need for both classroom supplies and art resources, and help redirect millions of indecomposable crayons from landfills. We seek to create an "eco-normal" movement, a new consciousness that is mindful of the environment and nearby communities in need.

CRAYON COLLECTION AND REALLOCATION - CRAYON COLLECTION INC. (CRAYON COLLECTION) ACTS AS THE LIAISON BETWEEN IMPOVERISHED SCHOOLS AND IT'S LOCAL COLLECTION PARTNER; WE TRAIN RESTAURANTS, HOTELS, AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS ON HOW TO COLLECT GENTLY USED CRAYONS, CREATE THE CONNECTION WITH A LOCAL SCHOOL IN NEED, AND ENSURE EACH GENTLY USED CRAYON IS REALLOCATED ON A MONTHLY BASIS. THE PROCESS IS HIGHLY LOCALIZED, AND YET SUPPORTED NATIONALLY BY CRAYON COLLECTION, IN ORDER TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OUR COLLECTION PARTNERS AND OUR HEAD START & TITLE 1 SCHOOL CLASSROOMS. TO DATE OUR IMPACT HAS BEEN SIGNIFICANT: A) OVER 10 MILLION CRAYONS HAVE BEEN DONATED TO SCHOOL PARTNERS AND SAVED FROM LANDFILLS; B) OVER 150 HEAD START CENTERS ARE RECEIVING CRAYONS WITH OVER 500 CENTERS ANTICIPATED IN 2016; C) OVER 1,000 TITLE 1 SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN CONNECTED WITH PROGRAM PARTNERS. WE HAVE INVESTED SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES IN PUBLICIZING THE PROGRAM ACROSS LOCAL AND NATIONAL TV STATIONS, PRINT & DIGITAL MEDIA OUTLETS TO ENCOURAGE WIDESPREAD AWARENESS OF OUR EFFORTS AND ENCOURAGE SUPPORT BOTH THROUGH DONATIONS AND COLLECTION NETWORKS. TO DATE WE HAVE ATTRACTED ATTENTION FROM NATIONAL MEDIA OUTLETS LIKE GOOD MORNING AMERICA, LOCAL NEWS AFFILIATES INCLUDING ABC, CBS, NBC, AND FOX, NATIONAL PRINT PUBLICATIONS LIKE PEOPLE AND REDBOOK MAGAZINE, AND A PARTNERSHIP WITH PENGUIN PUBLISHING HOUSE - PENGUIN YOUNG READERS. THIS EFFORT HAS BEEN LARGELY SUPPORTED BY PART-TIME STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS, WHO HAVE DEVOTED NUMEROUS HOURS TO THIS PROGRAM.$0$9,976
- Arts in Education Program - Crayon Collection wants to infuse art education in schools around the nation. We are providing schools with the art supply, the crayon, but we know there are many inexpensive ways to experience deeper learning with this simple tool. Crayon Collection uses the crayon as a way to teach art without schools incurring any additional costs through our Arts in Education program. We do this by partnering with local artist volunteers who develop and design a curriculum of art education using the reallocated crayons. Our Artist Rotation initiative invites artist volunteers to rotate local classrooms every few months, giving children access to a wide variety of art expression. We envision the curriculum taking crayons to another level beyond just coloring. Renowned artists Kenny Scharf and Annie Lapin are just two of the first artists to support Crayon Collection's Art in Education objective. They will design and implement interesting projects using these gently used crayons. This artistic mentoring process will add a deeper level of art education using a resource (crayon) that otherwise would have been trash. To date this program has been piloted in the United States with each recipient school we have worked with, over 150 schools so far. We intend to expand the program to at least 350 schools in 2017. Our crayon curriculum is available at no cost on our website, but funding for development of the curriculum and the artist rotation program is provided for through our general operating expenses. In addition to the work provided by the volunteer artists mentioned above, work has also been provided by our volunteer directors who has devoted numerous hours to this program.$0$4,275
