SCOPEs mission is to engage the parents, adults and the public at large with a connection to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). The SCOPE model employs public outreach through curating exhibits with STEAM Education to Workforce partners at local, state and national events. Sustained involvement is secured through a no cost website which provides a full spectrum STEAM pipeline including everything from an at home activity onto a job/career. | In 2020, SCOPE (Science and Citizens Organized for Purpose and Explorations) continued its evaluation of its model and best practices. With a goal to bring Science,Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) opportunities and resources to families, students, adults and SCOPE partners, at no cost, outreach and engagement was a challenge during the Covid pandemic. Activities moved to virtual, as much as possible. Ongoing partnerships with The United State Air Force through Air Mobility Command (AMC), historically black college and university (HBCU) Lane College, the public institution University of Missouri-Saint Louis (UMSL) Whitney Harris World Ecology Center, allowed SCOPE to remain connected to pathways and information to disseminate, from Informal Education onto Workforce. When travel and in person was still possible, Executive Director Cynthia Kramer brought together Dr. Rhonda Key from a joint venture program, Collaborative Laboratory Internships and Mentoring Blueprint (CLIMB) between St Louis Public Schools with UMSL which focused on mentoring high school students for a possible STEAM future. The CLIMB program, founded with Dr. Patricia Parker from UMSLs Whitney Harris World Ecology Center, had proof of concept for a paid summer internship program focused on high-ability but low-opportunity students from Jennings Senior High, a school with a population that is 100% African American and 100% free-lunch-eligible. As a Leadership Board Member of the Whitney Harris World Ecology Center, Cynthia believed there was a potential for collaborating with both Jackson Central-Merry Early College High School (JCMECHS) and Lane College in Jackson, TN. Jackson, TN is only 4 hours from St Louis, so this could allow for a trial for future national expansion. Dr. Rhonda Key, Cynthia Kramer, Nathan Lane (JCMECHS), Dr. Logan Hampton (President Lane College), and Dr. Van Stry, Associate Professor of Biology and the Chair of the Science Division (Lane College) were organized by SCOPE to convene in Jackson, TN. As Dr Parker could not attend, both Dr. Key and Cynthia acted as UMSL liaisons, along with their respective positions with CLIMB and SCOPE. They both spoke to the Lane College Science Club to share the CLIMB program and garner information about their paths. In meetings with Lane College and JCMECHS it was clear there were opportunities to trial CLIMB, as well as for the two institutions to work together more closely in their own community for a higher education pipeline.A follow up was planned for July. The goal was to bring Dr.Van Stry and her team to St Louis, tour UMSL, find areas for possible collaboration, and designate next steps. Work halted on this project when schools and most of the country shut down. SCOPE utilized the remainder of 2020 to research the need for STEAM resources and trusted information, unique ways for outreach, along with strategies for long term engagement. | $2,876 | - |
