SCOPEs mission is to engage the parents, adults and the public at large with a connection to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math). The SCOPE model employs public outreach through curating exhibits with STEAM Education to Workforce partners at local, state and national events. Sustained involvement is secured through a no cost website which provides a full spectrum STEAM pipeline including everything from an at home activity onto a job/career. Target demographics include community as a whole (all ages), particularly underserved urban and rural cores. Addressing diversity among minority and women are additionally highly important. Because many programs are dedicated to serving youth, SCOPE particularly focuses on Adults. A niche needed to be filled for parents and adults looking to retool their careers with 21st century skills. | During the year of 2019, SCOPE (Science and Citizens Organized for Purpose and Explorations) used its 2018 evaluation to redefine its public engagement for the best possible impact to bring the best opportunities and resources to families, students, adults and SCOPE partners. SCOPE continued serving on the United State Air Force through Air Mobility Command (AMC). An AMC Leadership Tour of Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX led to the ongoing share of SCOPEs outreach methods, partnership growth across the US with other AMC leaders and review of STEM/STEAM needs and activities in their regions. In May, SCOPE Executive Director Cynthia Kramer met with Tricia Morris from the Dover Air Force Base Museum. She provided them with projects and various STEAM links for their summer camp. This was a great success and a new area for SCOPE to broaden its access to families, and adults. It also allowed SCOPE to connect a new segment of educators, with the concept of tying real life opportunities into fun informal engagement. Those relationships are crucial for proof of concept and growing the model. This year, SCOPE looked at the return on investment for festivals within festivals. The outcome was SCOPE became a consultant for others, like the military, learn how to outreach to the public. Budget cuts in education and industry made 2019 a difficult year for partners to take the time and incur the cost to display at events.Cynthia used her position as a member of the Whitney Harris World Ecology Center at University of Missouri-St Louis (WHWEC) to build a network which would both serve as a new avenue of activity for SCOPE, as well as bring together the Education to Workforce pipeline from St Louis, MO to Jackson, TN. In learning about the Jennings-UMSL Mentorship Program (JUMP) at a Leadership meeting, Cynthia realized the potential to address several STEAM/STEM issues. The program paired college students with high schoolers, which allowed them to learn, define higher education paths, and potential career opportunities. Lane College in Jackson, TN has a robust Science department, however due to the nature of the town, research opportunities are often difficult to attain. Another SCOPE partner Jackson Central Mary Early College High School, which is down the street from Lane College is a dual credit (High School Diploma and Associates Degree) school allows students to make the most of their High School path to Higher Ed and Workforce. The WHWEC mentioned it might be interested in expanding, in order to see if the concept could ramp up. Normally, a trial in another region would be the answer. Missouri is a big state, Kansas City (often partnering with St Louis for programming) is about 4 hours away. SCOPE realized Jackson, TN is only a 4-hour drive, yet an hour by regional flight, and would allow the Jennings-UMSL Mentorship Program (JUMP) to explore its efficacy in another state. It could also fit into Tennessees significant work to support STEM/STEAM from Education to Workforce. Cynthia organized a meeting between the Jennings Director Rhonda Keys (who met with everyone representing her colleague and partner Dr. Patricia Parker at WHWEC at University of Missouri-St Louis as well), Lane College Science Department, Leadership, Science Club, along with Jackson Central Mary Early College High School (JCMECHS) staff and students. Much synergy was found. An immediate connection was made between Lane and JCMECHS. Within a week, they joined forces for a NASA grant. Rhonda Keys and Dr. Parker decided to look into next steps for a follow up meeting in St Louis. This proved to be an exceptional year of taking best practices, SCOPEs mission, and discovering ways to tweak what worked, expand upon innovative methods to continue to stay fresh while addressing the needs of our audience, and to move away from the areas that no longer served them. | $55 | - |
