SCOPEs mission is to engage the public and connect them to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) through speaking engagements, local, state and national events, as well as sustained involvement by accessing information and resources, at no cost, for the pipeline from Education to Workforce. Target demographics include: parents, students, adults in the underserved areas of urban and rural cores, with some outreach given to outlying suburban regions. Because there are many programs dedicated to serving youth, SCOPE particularly focuses on the bringing a real life relevance to communities at large, particularly those who would otherwise self-select away from Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. SCOPE works with government, industry, education and civic groups to reinforce their opportunities and insure theyre brought to people where they live. | In 2014, SCOPE focused on solidifying its national presence, in order to increase opportunities and resources for the parents, students, adults and partners we serve. SCOPE Executive Director continued involvement, on the national level, as a core member of COPUS (Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science), as well as work with colleagues on the second of a two year project with Massachusetts Institute of Technology Museums Science Festival Alliance (SFA). MITs SFA is funded and provides evaluation to the National Science Foundation (NSF) SCOPEs model for rural outreach and engaging underserved populations resulted in MITs SFA bringing SCOPE on board as one of four sub awardees to mentor festivals across the United States. The areas for SCOPE to work with included the Flathead Reservation and University of Montana in Missoula, as well as The University of Brownsville TX collaboration with the Brownsville Museum of Fine Art, NASA and a celebration of Space coming to the area. SCOPE remains active in the Missouri After-School Network and is represented on the Leadership Board of the Missouri Chapter for the National Girls Collaborative Project, also an NSF funded project. SCOPE shared knowledge and examples of ways to continually impart a STEM Education to Workforce pathway into community activities. SCOPE coordinated and led a team of STEM Education to Workforce partners at two key events. March hosted the St. Louis Spirit Air Show STEM Expo, featuring the Navys Blue Angels. Over 150,000 attended the weekend. ~18,000 were served directly at the STEM Expo. SCOPE organized a Preview Day prior with public, private, parochial and home school students. Families, Teachers and Administrators were also included. More than 2,000 attended the 4 hour event, which included 36 students taking in air flight workshops. The Airshow featured SCOPE at home activities and was hyperlinked to SCOPEs site, in order to insure whether or not someone attended, they could access the STEM pathway. April, SCOPE brought 10 partners to the USA Science and Engineering Festival in Washington DC. The Midwest Pavilion was the first of its kind. The Benjamin Banneker Charter School in Kansas City, MO sent staff and students to showcase their virtual STEM plus Art programming. University of Central Missouri, University of Missouri Kansas City, University of Missouri St. Louis shared opportunities which linked back to the Maker movement (also a presenting partner), 3D printing and more. This event served the public, yet is also a bit of a trade show, where the exchange of ideas and networking was in full force. SCOPE secured more information and partners for website, outreach and shared best practices. Over 150,000 attended. The USA Science and Engineering Festival occurs every two years, so SCOPEs Midwest Pavilion and website hyperlink had significant opportunity to connect with the public before and after the event. 2014 saw a large increase in reaching people. Estimates show SCOPE touched upwards of 500,000 through our activities and served about 75,000 in person. While the public isnt always relating to STEMs value or seeing their place in it, SCOPEs neutral approach, no cost offering and ability to bring many organizations together for interactive constructive, and highly effective, engagement is key. Momentum for this Festival within a Festival model continues to grow and SCOPE will continue to work towards maximizing outcomes for the organizations and those we serve. | $70,351 | - |
