Odcs mission, through its professional dance company, school and presenting theater, is to inspire audiences, cultivate artists, engage community, and foster diversity and inclusion through dance.odcs strategic vision focuses on changing lives through the catalytic power of movement. By igniting, incubating and inspiring, the organization is a nexus of creativity, providing access to the transformative power of dance; nurturing lifelong participation in dance, and serving as an essential hub for community and creative collabration and exchange.odc is committed to expanding its impact by enhancing connection to existing patrons and engaging with new constituents through innovative and mutual participatory activities; strengthening the bay areas and the west coasts performance arts ecosystem, and deepening excellence in the dance field.

Henry Erlich and Brenda Way are husband and wife, and both were on the Board as of December 31, 2017.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The tax return is prepared by an outside accounting firm. After completion of said returns, the organization is sent a draft of the tax returns to be reviewed and examined. The organization makes copies of the returns and distributes to those individuals charged with governance. Those individuals at that time can review and if applicable discuss any line items in the return with the accountant who has prepared the return. If all items are found to be acceptable, an authorization is signed and provided to authorize the outside accounting firm to process, sign and provide copies of the returns to be filed (paper or electronically) with the designated governmental agencies. The tax returns are then signed by the organization, stamped and mailed with certified return receipt or the signed form 8879 is provided to the outside accounting firm allowing electronic filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

Hiring or contracting is done using established HR policies. To ensure that ODC monitors areas for potential conflict of interest, committees are used to hire staff and/or contract with outside service providers. No one person in the organization can contract or hire any individual without the consent of the ED, AD and the Finance Manager. Any conflicts of interest found are brought to the attention of the Board for further action.

IRS990/Desc0ODC has evolved to become the most active center for contemporary dance on the West Coast. Its school is open 365 days each year, and is dedicated to quality and access. Staffed by more than 180 professional instructors, ODC School offers 235 classes each week in a wide variety of genres. The School serves a total of more than 16,000 youth, teen and adult students ranging in age from 2 to 90 each year. The teen scholarship program supports 15% of the annual student population with over $100,000 in dedicated funds to make dance lessons accessible for all. Unlike most professional American dance institutions, ODCs definition of dance embraces both the fervent amateur and the lifelong professional. In addition to classes, ODC Schools Youth and Teen program include the Dance Jam a pre-professional teen company of 9-13 members which provides participants with an intensive training and performance experience, including 7 classes and 3 rehearsals per week, work with professional choreographers, performances of the professional companys repertory, participation in company fundraisers and special events, and the production of its own season with mentorship provided by ODC staff. The ODC Hip Hop dance-focused Seeds has also been expanded as a teen ensemble. Members train and rehearse weekly and perform in specific showcases and community based performance opportunities.Since its founding, ODC/Dance has performed for more than 2 million people in 31 states and 13 countries. Built on risk and nerve (New York Times), ODC/Dance premieres new works by resident choreographers Brenda Way, KT Nelson, Kimi Okada, and guest choreographer Kate Weare; showcasing a wide range of award-winning repertory which currently consists of more than 140 works. In 2017, nearly 22,000 audience members around the country experienced ODCs professional dance company in live performance in two home seasons in San Francisco and through national and international touring.In 2017, ODC premiered two new works, Blink of an Eye choreographed by KT Nelson and What we carry What we keep choreographed by Brenda Way. Blink of an Eye, was inspired by Nelsons meditation practice and her six-week walk and participation in the ancient Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. What we carry was inspired by a New York Times review of The Keeper exhibition at the New Museum, and informed by community member answers to a survey which asked, What is it with the relationship between people and things anywaythis human drive to have more and more? ODC also continued its more than 30-year tradition of presenting its original holiday classic, Velveteen Rabbit. As part of ODCs commitment to access and community engagement, the company invited 1,200 students and educators from underserved local schools to attend admission-free performances of The Velveteen Rabbit and companion educational activities. This access is designed to foster imagination and creativity of underserved students, many of whom have never experienced a live dance performance.ODCs Healthy Dancers Clinic is a model for diagnostic health evaluation, provided free of charge to the ODC community. The clinic also regularly offers in-depth, two-hour health screenings to professional dancers and dance educators as part of the Dance/USA Taskforce on Dancers Health.ODC owns its two Mission District buildings and serves as a significant resource for small and mid-sized companies, both new and long established: from infrastructure needs like physical meeting and rehearsal spaces, formal mentorship and technical consulting programs, to presenting and subsidized rental opportunities.
