Mission

Odcs mission, through its professional dance company, school and presenting theater, is to inspire audiences, cultivate artists, engage community, and foster diversity and inclusion through dance.odcs strategic vision focuses on changing lives through the catalytic power of movement. By igniting, incubating and inspiring, the organization is a nexus of creativity, providing access to the transformative power of dance; nurturing lifelong participation in dance, and serving as an essential hub for community and creative collabration and exchange.odc is committed to expanding its impact by enhancing connection to existing patrons and engaging with new constituents through innovative and mutual participatory activities; strengthening the bay areas and the west coasts performance arts ecosystem, and deepening excellence in the dance field.

ODC's mission is to inspire audiences, cultivate artists, engage community and foster diversity and inclusion through dance.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The tax returns are prepared by an outside accounting firm. After completion of said returns, the organization is sent a draft of the tax returns to be reviewed and examined. The organization distributes copies of the complete returns to the board of directors. If all items are found to be acceptable, an authorization is signed and provided to the outside accounting firm to process, sign and provide copies of the returns to be filed (paper or electronically) with the designated governmental agencies. The tax returns are then signed by the organization, stamped with certified return receipt and timely placed in the mail for filing, or the form 8879 is provided to the outside accounting firm allowing electronic filing.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 12C: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts

Hiring or contracting is done using established HR policies. To ensure that ODC monitors areas for potential conflict of interest, committees are used to hire staff and/or contract with outside service providers. No one person in the organization can contract or hire any individual without the consent of the ED, AD and the Finance Manager. Any conflicts of interest found are brought to the attention of the Board for further action.

ODC is exempt from federal and state income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, and Section 23701(d) of the California Revenue and Taxation Code. ODC has adopted the accounting guidance related to uncertain tax positions, and has evaluated its tax positions and believes that all of the positions taken by ODC in its federal and state exempt organization tax returns are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination.

IRS990/Desc0In March, ODC/Dance premiered its evening-length work, boulders and bones, to universal acclaim. YBCA attendance totaled 5,067 over the two week-run. A commissioned three-hour installation performance on Alcatraz Island in conjunction with the opening of Ai Wei Weis @Large exhibit in September drew a thousand spectators. In December, the companys holiday classic, The Velveteen Rabbit, played for 3 weeks. A 25 year holiday tradition, 10,134 audience members attended 15 performances. Our Buddies for Bunnies student outreach program (free tickets and transportation for students from Bay Area public schools) was again fully underwritten. 1,200 third-grade students took part, a majority experiencing live performance for the first time.ODC School, dedicated to quality and access, offers 235 classes in a variety of genres for youth, teens, and adults; from dance workout to world dance, hip hop, professional contemporary and ballet. It is staffed by some 180 professional artist/teachers and composer/accompanists who approach the classroom as an artistic endeavor. ODCs Youth & Teen program provides a diverse dance curriculum for ages 2-18. More than 800 youth participated in classes at ODC during the 2014-15 school year, 12% of whom received scholarships based on need, talent, and/or potential.Unlike most professional American dance institutions, ODC's definition of dance embraces both the fervent amateur and the lifelong professional. Thanks to this inclusive stance, we serve 13,000 adult students each year. Our debt-free, two building Mission district campus also includes a fully-subsidized Healthy Dancers' Clinic. Even as the impact and scope of the organization expands, ODC remains true to the communal spirit of its beginnings. Across all programs, ODC offers opportunities for dancers, dance makers, and audiences to participate in all stages of the creative process.
