Supplemental Narrative

Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4A-first Accomplishment

In 2023 odc faced one of the most fiscally challenging years of its 50+ year history due to: - the glacially slow pace of audience and patron return to participation in the arts post pandemic, - extensive relocation out of san francisco of audience and artists as well as the creative professionals required for performing arts production, - the profound negative consequences to san francisco's arts, food and beverage, tourism, and small business sectors from highly publicized "doom loop" narrative about san francisco in national and regional press, resulting in perceptions of crime and cleanliness issues across the city, - the withdrawal of long-time foundation and corporate funders to the sf bay area region and the performing arts in favor of other sectors and other regions - the conclusion of all state and federal covid relief funding despite a slow recovery from the dynamic impacts of the pandemic, and - the temporary cessation of the irs processing ertc credits despite odc having met all eligibility requirements for nearly $1mm in credits to prepare for these anticipated and on-going environmental challenges, odc invested in staff, programs, and capital with resources available exclusively in the 2022 calendar year. Most significantly and responding to the collapse in so many aspects of the field, odc responded to the unique opportunity to acquire the building adjacent to its current theater, purchasing 3175-3177 17th street in the fall of 2022. For odc, it will provide enhanced function of its theater and increase the size of its existing campus by 14,400 square feet-a 40% expansion of the current campus square footage. For the field, our purchase captures space for the future, as many others close and real estate goes increasingly to tech industries. Though the organization was required to draw down its board designated artistic venture and innovation fund to achieve a balanced budget result at year-end, odc survived the 2023 year in stark contrast to numerous other 50+ year old non-profits and small businesses in the region who closed their doors. Through the year, the organization's presence and programs become dramatically more valuable to its own constituents and the bay area's arts ecosystem as it became, in some cases, one of the last 5-10 remaining providers or the sole in-region provider of programs and resources such as access to mentorship and small business incubation focused on dance artists; dance-making space for $25/hr.; arts access class and ticket rates; employment for dance artists, employment for dance educators and employment for related creative professionals. Significantly, odc continued its queer bipoc space residency program and strengthened its rental discount initiative (curated by a panel of guest artists and community leaders), granting 100s of hours of discounted and fully subsidized studio and meeting space access to artists, peer arts organizations, and fellow, local non-profits. Odc is now one of just five organizations in the greater san francisco bay area renting studio space at or below $25 per/hour. Odc continued the sustained, costly process of rebuilding its in-person class offerings for students of all abilities and ages in its school and its health program. It recruited and re-hired faculty, increased its schedule of in-person class offerings from the 2022 year, and extended the time period in which classes are subsidized and incubated before final roi evaluation determines continuation or conclusion in the schedule based on impact on mission delivery, attendance and fiscal sustainability. Pre-pandemic, odc school offered more than 200 classes per week in a wide variety of genres. The student base was normally 16,000 annual participants ranging in age from 2 years-old to 90+ and representing all abilities. 2023 enrollment reached a year-end census of 2513 total students, a schedule of 220 classes per week, and a return to 96 faculty from the 2019 benchmark of 102. Odc school's schol

Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The organization has adopted the accounting standard related to uncertainties in income taxes. The organization evaluates uncertain tax positions through its review of the source of revenue to identify unrelated business income and certain other matters, including those which may affect its tax exempt status. Management believes their estimates related to income tax uncertainties are appropriate based on the current facts and circumstances. The organization's federal returns of organization exempt from income tax (form 990) for years ended december 31, 2020 and after are subject to examination by the irs, generally for three years after they are filed. The organization's state returns (form 199) for the years ended december 31, 2019 and after could be subject to examination by state (california) taxing authorities, generally for four years after they are filed.
