“Program #1 BUILDING COMMUNITIESCLLC continues to play a leadership role in the Roundtable on the Crown of the Continent, an ongoing forum of leaders and citizens that is magnifying and expanding efforts to improve the ecological integrity and sustainable communities in the Crown of the Continent. During the fall of 2017, we held the 8th annual Roundtable conference. The Leadership Team conducted its annual retreat with continued emphasis on tribal engagement and leadership. CLLC continues to be on the leadership committee and be the fiscal sponsor for The Network for Landscape Conservation (NLC). NLC brings together over 300 large landscape conservation groups with close to 400 members. These groups are all working together to elevate the effectiveness of collaborative large scale conservation across North America. Through the NLC network, we are advancing the practice of conservation through collective community action.CLLC continues to collaborate with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and Blackfeet Tribe to develop climate adaptation plans and now more formally refer to this as the Tribal Climate Change Network. We are working to expand this network to include tribal communities further east in Montana, and we are sharing some of our lessons learned at national conferences focused on culturally sensitive conservation.CLLC became chair of Connectivity Conservation Specialist Group (CCSG) in 2016. In the past year, the CCSG has recruited a global membership of over 750 people working on connectivity conservation from over 73 countries around the world. Additionally, a coordinating committee is working together to highlight Areas of Connectivity Conservation. Over 450 institutions are represented in this community including universities, governments and indigenous agencies, the private sector, and community-based organizations.The Transport Working Group (TWG) of the CCSG brings together a specialized community of road engineers, road ecologists, infrastructure specialists, international finance institutions and transportation agencies. The TWG provides rapid response expertise to local and regional governments and civil society organizations concerned about road projects that often are built without any local oversight or public comment.”
“Program #2 ADVANCING SCIENCECLLC and partners will work together in an effort to incorporate ecological connectivity as a key element in the Custer Gallatin National Forest Plan Revision. Our spatial ecology staff are conducting a wildlife corridor and connectivity analyses for this Plan Revision. During the past year we wrapped up a pilot project with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. We created and presented a resource management tool used for prioritizing management actions that optimize joint benefits to terrestrial and freshwater targets, using the Missouri Headwaters Basin of southwest Montana as a case study. This tool uses new climate modeling and remote sensing techniques to explore how climate change may impact habitat for desert grassland wildlife species.”
“Over the past year, CLLC has made great progress with local governments concerning wildlife crossings. After 6 years of work by CLLC and partners, Teton County unanimously approved a new wildlife crossings plan, stating where crossing structures can be placed to improve motorist and wildlife safety. This is the first ever county-wide plan addressing wildlife connectivity and road crossing in the nation. CLLC has partnered with the Blackfeet Nation to co-develop a reservation-wide Animal-Vehicle Collision Reduction Master Plan (the first in the nation) that identifies and prioritizes proposed mitigation for roads with the highest incidence of collisions involving wildlife. CLLC and partners also launched the State Wildlife Corridor Project: a one-year pilot project to lay the groundwork for successful state wildlife corridors legislation and policies for 2019 and beyond. This groundwork can be used for state laws and policies on connectivity across the country.”
