“Program #1 building communitiescllc continues to play a leadership role in the roundtable on the crown of the continent, an ongoing forum of leaders and citizens that is magnifying and expanding efforts to improve the ecological integrity and sustainable communities in the crown of the continent. During the fall of 2016 we held a well-attended tribal roundtable meeting and the 7th annual conference. The leadership team conducted its annual retreat with continued emphasis on tribal engagement and leadership. Our social network analysis shows the power of partnership in climate change adaptation, is a metric of our success. Lessons learned are frequently transferred to other landscapes.the past year has brought tremendous growth to our fiscally-sponsored network of large landscape conservation practitioners. In addition to being the networks organizational home, cllc helps to lead the network by sitting on the leadership committee. The network built active working groups on priority initiatives including a policy working group that has prepared a policy paper as an educational document for federal policymakers. Cllc is a coordinator and facilitator for the national drought resilience partnership in the missouri headwaters basin (high divide region of montana). Great progress is being made to address drought planning in the missouri headwaters basin. We facilitated a survey and workshop of government agencies and local watershed groups to arrive at a workplan for the project. This plan serves as the drought mitigation tool for the entire watershed. Lead agencies for this work, including epa region 8 and the montana dnrc, are working with cllc to create a drought mitigation model for other basins nationwide.cllc collaborates with the confederated salish and kootenai tribes and blackfeet tribe to develop climate adaptation plans. Through workshops, we have facilitated conversations with the tribes to identify changes occurring on tribal lands due to climate shifts, and have helped them draft long-term plans for adaptation. This is a model for other tribal communities throughout the world. As part of this work, cllc and the roundtable on the crown of the continent received the u.s. Department of interiors climate adaptation leadership award, which recognizes these innovative efforts to safeguard the region's resources from climate change.”

“Program #2 advancing sciencethe gnlcc convenes 26 federal partners, five states and two canadian provinces to advance landscape-scale conservation. Cllc facilitates development of a region-wide strategy that supports local connectivity objectives while highlighting their context in the larger landscape. During that last year we helped implement these strategies by providing tools and facilitating gnlcc partners via local workshops. During 2016 cllc added more than 30 datasets to the gnlcc connectivity atlas and used the atlas and related data to identify more than 185 highway projects for wildlife-related mitigation measures in the states of colorado, idaho and montana. The data is also being used to inform u.s. Forest service plans under revision. There is a great deal of uncertainty as to the future of the landscape conservation cooperatives under the trump administration, and if they will be funded in 2017 and for how long. We will continue to move forward with facilitating and coordinating role with the gnlcc as long as we can and are firmly committed to moving this region-wide connectivity strategy forward. During the past year we wrapped up a project with the north central climate science center, where we completed a climate change vulnerability assessment for the u.s. Northern rockies wildlife corridors. Through a report, downloadable data layers, and web-based story map we are sharing how climate change may alter connectivity through changes in habitat composition and how practitioners can integrate this information into climate adaptation strategies.”

“Program #3 advocating policy cllc recently completed a study, using montana department of transportation's "carcass counts" over the past 5 years, and pinpointed the "top ten" roads for vehicle collisions with ungulates. We are working with mdt to reduce the carnage. We received excellent press coverage in montana's largest papers.as part of our crossroads efforts the wyoming department of transportation (wydot) is set to break ground on a $100 million project to widen us hwy 89 south of jackson hole. Based in part on a camera trap data collected by cllc and its local partners wydot decided to add an additional underpass, bringing the total number of wildlife crossings along this stretch of highway to eight. We are also working to ensure wildlife mitigation is including in numerous road projects in the region.cllc is recognized as a national leader on connectivity policy that are transformed into local landscape protection in places identified by science as critical linkage areas. For nearly a decade we have been driving policy creation and helping craft new legislative language at the federal, regional and state levels. To determine the effectiveness of these new policies, cllc participates in a limited number of local, on-the-ground efforts to transform policy into practice.our leadership with the connectivity policy coalition (22 national and regional conservation organizations) allows us to shape and influence federal administrative policies, state-based initiatives and provide wildlife corridor information for legislation across the country. During the past year cllc and the wildlands network lead the effort to develop federal legislation for the national wildlife corridors conservation act, working with congressman don beyer (d-va). It was introduced in november, and we anticipate a reintroduction this spring. If it were to pass, the act would establish a national wildlife corridors system to provide for the protection and restoration of native fish, wildlife and plant species and their habitats throughout the united states that have been diminished by habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation.”
