Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

Our goal has remained the same for over fifty years: Land preservation, advocacy for its appropriate use and empowering others to do the same. The New Jersey Conservation Foundation preserves land through a comprehensive program of statewide land acquisition and management, promoting strong land use policies, sponsoring and supporting local groups and partners, and education. New Jersey Conservation Foundation forges strategic partnerships with Federal, State and Local Government agencies as well as other non-profits to achieve conservation goals. This multi-faceted approach is one of our strengths and sets us apart from other land conserving groups in New Jersey. We will continue this approach as we move into the next fifty years.

Financial Statement Notes

Part II, Line 9

Conservation easements are recorded on the balance sheet at a nominal value of $1. The remaining costs of acquiring the easements are expensed.

Part V, Line 4

The Board-Designated endowment fund was established from unrestricted donor contributions for the management and conservation of monies to be used in furtherance of the goals and purposes of the organization.

Part X, Line 2

The Internal Revenue Service (the "IRS") has recognized the Foundation as tax exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Management has analyzed the tax positions taken by the Foundation and has concluded that as of December 31, 2016 and 2015, there are no uncertain tax positions taken or expected to be taken that would require the recognition of a liability or disclosure in the consolidated financial statements. The Foundation recognizes accrued interest and penalties associated with uncertain tax provisions, if any. There were no income tax-related interest and penalties recorded for the years ended December 31,2016 and 2015.

IRS990/Desc0Land Preservation: In 2016, we exceeded our goal of preserving at least 2,100 acres of conservation lands, having preserved more than 2,650 acres throughout the state. These include preserved family farms and natural areas that safeguard clean drinking water, produce local foods, and provide wildlife habitat, scenic beauty and outdoor recreation. In 2016, we preserved: 1. 2,400 acres of the Zemel properties in the Pine Barrens, the culmination of nearly 30 years of negotiations. 2. 172 acres as agricultural easement and permanently preserved farmland in Bedminster, Somerset County. 3. 100 acres preserved as farmland in Tewksbury, Hunterdon County. 4. 8.7 acres in Delaware Township, Hunterdon County, near New Jerseys last covered bridge, which provides a link to a local trail network. 5. Pine Barrens Additions groundwater below these newly preserved properties drains into the Kirkwood-Cohansey aquifer, which supplies drinking water to 1 million people in Southern New Jersey. 6. 811-acre new preserve within Brendan Byrne State Forest. This rare ecological treasure contains some of the most beautiful wetlands in the Pine Barrens and provides critical habitat to more than 50 rare, threatened or endangered species. 7. 1,000 acres added to the Franklin Parker Preserve. This purchase enlarges the Franklin Parker Preserve to 11,379 acres, or nearly 18 square miles. We developed the new Conservation Blueprint mapping system with The Nature Conservancy, Rowan University, William Penn Foundation and the states conservation community. The Conservation Blueprint mapping system combines data from state and federal agencies, and New Jerseys nonprofit land trusts, to allow for a more coordinated, strategic approach to identify and preserve the best natural, agricultural and urban areas for health in the Garden State. Stewardship: In 2016, we continued to manage more than 27,000 acres of land and conservation easements, including 16 preserves that are open to the public. These preserves contain trails and associated amenities for walking, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, fishing, boating, and other recreational activities. In 2016, we: 1. Maintained over 50 miles of trails on our preserves. 2. Inspected our preserved lands to ensure compliance with Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices. 3. Removed invasive plants and replaced with native species. 4. Coordinated efforts between various land management and law enforcement agencies to curtail illegal and highly damaging off-road vehicle use in the Forked River Mountain area. 5. Conducted the first prescribed burn at the Franklin Parker Preserve in approximately ten years. Our collaboration with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service was so successful that they allowed us to conduct a prescribed burn that was more intense than usual in order to more closely mimic the beneficial effects that wildfire has on rare plant and animal habitat. Advocacy: New Jersey Conservation Foundation strives to promote and defend public policies that protect the land and natural resources of New Jersey with integrity and transparency. We work to preserve the permanence of land preservation, further land preservation and natural resource protection through policy actions, promote stable sources of government funding, and strengthen citizen conservation advocacy. To that end, in 2016 we: 1. Continued to lead and coordinate Rethink Energy NJ to inform and empower New Jersey citizens regarding the need for swift transition to clean, efficient and renewable energy and increased energy efficiency, with reduced reliance on fossil fuels and pipelines that threaten our preserved lands, water, environment, public health and communities. 2. Commissioned and released results of a second public opinion poll indicating continued overwhelming support among New Jersey voters for moving more rapidly towards a clean energy future, as well as significant concern over gas pipeline proposals. 3. Worked to prevent the siting of
