Healing Bridges works with traditional communities to create audiovisual products about their beliefs, engages in various forms of advocacy and other supporting activities in national and international arenas to protect and strengthen them, and bridge the gap between them and the modern world for mutual benefit. Current focus is with the traditional authorities (shamans) of the Kofan indigenous people in the Colombian Amazon with sporadic engagement with those of the Siona people.

| Strengthening traditional communities. Healing Bridges continued pressing the Inter American System of Human Rights on the failure of the Colombian State to restore Kofan territory (Individual Petition filed in 2013). In January, Healing Bridges submitted a 115 page legal brief (with 13 annexes) of "further observations" to Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. In July, Healing Bridges gathered in Bogotá with four Kofan traditional authorities, two Kofan grandmothers, and two followers of traditional medicine, had three nights of ceremony of traditional indigenous medicine, and accompanied them to a meeting with the National Lands Agency (ANT.) In September, two of the Traditional Authorities sent the ANT a follow-up letter. We also met with the Ministry of Agriculture and one of USAID-Colombia's implementing partners, ACDI/VOCA. In October, Healing Bridges went to the Kofan territory of Santa Rosa del Guamuéz and visited 14 Ingi Bupa projects: five aquaculture sites, six chicken coops, two fields of crops, one pig sty, and an eventual Ingi Bupa site, a plant nursery. We participated in ceremony of traditional medicine with two Kofan Traditional Authorities, two Kofan grandmothers, and other followers of traditional medicine and family members. Healing Bridges provided $14,047 towards the Ingi bupa project, a hallmark of which is the minga or collective work session (representing cultural recovery), supporting aviculture, aquaculture, and other agriculture. The participating 10 families bought 2 piglets and 400 egg-laying hens, 64 bags of fish feed, 77 bags of chicken feed, 3 bags of piglet feed, supplies for egg-laying hens, materials for two chicken coops, one pump for pond replenishment, and one food grinder. The aquaculture participants bought all the fish fry without our support. The 20 mingas (March 25 - November 18) built one chicken coop, refurbished aquaculture ponds; and farmed crops, over a total of 875 hours. Eight children participated in an average of 6 mingas. They also organized two scheduling meetings as well as two workshops on the mingas and accounting. In addition to the two chicken coops, Healing Bridges boosted infrastructure by providing $7,574 to support the construction of a women's outside shelter by ceremonial house, the construction of a new home for a Kofan widow, support for a Siona Traditional Authority's home construction in the reservation Buenavista, another Siona Traditional Authority's home in the reservation Nuevo Amanecer, and a Kofan Traditional Authority's home in Santa Rosa del Guamuéz. Healing Bridges provided $480 in support for ASMIK, the association of Kofan Traditional Authorities, Asociación "U'fama Kwipa Atenswndekhw A'indekhw," Médicos Kofanes de la Sabiduría U'fama, funding its annual obligations to the Colombian State, and providing some support for ASMIK's annual meeting. In 2023, Healing Bridges remunerated $3,937 in indigenous labor, nearly one third of it in honoraria for their work in ceremonies of traditional indigenous medicine. Healing Bridges provided $1,470 for western medical and/or traditional treatment, and in some cases, its associated travel and/or lodging support, for 3 elder Kofan Traditional Authorities, 1 Kofan leader, and 1 Kofan widow's child. We provided support for funeral of elder Traditional Authority Tiberio Queta, R.I.P. In the policy realm, Healing Bridges issued a call for an immediate moratorium on all carbon-offset programs involving indigenous peoples in Colombia and engaged leaders of an Inga indigenous community; Colombian civil society, Catholic church, press, university, and government; NGOs in England, and staff of the U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva and Colombia. Healing Bridges virtually presented an overview of the mechanics of a REDD+ project at a conference of campesino leaders in Ibagué, Tolima Department. Healing Bridges provided feedback to the United Nations Development Programme's Social and Environmental Compliance Unit on their investigative report about their 2021 "strategic alliance" fiasco with the oil company GeoPark. We participated in several meetings of the Colombia Steering Committee, participated in the annual Human Rights Consultation with USAID-Colombia, and drafted language for inclusion in the NGO follow-up letter. | $0 | $49,540 |
| Healing Bridges was honored to present "Interconnections of Horror, Interconnections for Hope: Health and the Traditional Authorities of the Kofan (A'i) people of the Colombian Amazon" at the annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in a panel organized by the National Academies of Science. During 2023 Healing Bridges also briefed Colombian and USA civil society, and staff of USAID-Colombia. This outreach included a "Lunch and Learn" engagement at Bradley University and also teaching an in-person class on Social Justice Advocacy. We participated in a two-day conference launching the National Academies of Sciences' "Climate Crossroads" initiative. In December, Healing Bridges conducted 29 zoom year-end briefings, reaching 109 individuals in 22 states, Puerto Rico, the District of Columbia; and China, Thailand, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Mexico, and Colombia. Healing Bridges continued its search for markets for Kofan, selling handicrafts at a boutique. | $0 | $11,183 |
| Production of audiovisual products about traditional communities and beliefs. Healing Bridges produced and published three videos: "2023 update on October visit," "Turning the 'bore' plant into fish food", and "Don Ovidio and his machine." Healing Bridges produced two videos for the Kofan. We received 313 photos and 59 videos from the Ingi bupa semanba humbachuha mendevi food sovereignty project participants and other beneficiaries. In October, Healing Bridges videotaped 3.6 hours of interviews and meetings, both of Ingi Bupa participants and their sites; and of a conversation about Kofan traditional medicine with two curacas, two grandmothers, and followers of traditional medicine. We formatted photos and/or created graphics for 11 Facebook posts, created four graphics for internal use and meetings, and created five graphics and formatted two video clips for a presentation. We also designed and printed three postcards. | $0 | $7,347 |
