Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Healing Bridges works with traditional communities to create audiovisual products about their beliefs, engages in various forms of advocacy and other supporting activities in national and international arenas to protect and strengthen them, and bridge the gap between them and the modern world for mutual benefit. Current focus is with the traditional authorities (shamans) of the Kofan indigenous people in the Colombian Amazon with sporadic engagement with those of the Siona people.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Strengthening traditional communities. Healing Bridges assembled and shared information with the Office of the Inspector General, drafted and followed-up on formal information requests to the Government, reviewing the 236 pages of responsive documents, and obtained and began the review of 980 pages of documents of a related legal case. In January Healing Bridges gathered 9 Kofan traditional authorities, 6 elder women, 10 apprentices, and 2 Siona guests from 6 territories to share video it produced of 2018 meetings with the Interior Ministry and the Office of the Inspector General in Bogotá. In March, Healing Bridges met in Bogotá with 2 Kofan traditional authorities and 2 apprentices, while in November, Healing Bridges gathered 4 Kofan traditional authorities, 4 elder women, and 8 followers. Healing Bridges reviewed and discussed video, provided a space for ASMIK-related business, and created the space for a dialogue between the Santa Rosa governor and the traditional authorities. Two musicians, one of them Kofan, showed up in November. Healing Bridges continued its support for ASMIK, the association of Kofan Traditional Authorities, the Asociación "U'fama Kwipa Atenswndekhw A'indekhw," Médicos Kofanes de la Sabiduría U'fama, funding its yearly regulatory compliance with Colombian State, funding the participation of 7 elder women at ASMIK annual assembly in May, and funding an extraordinary assembly of 5 curacas, 4 apprentices, 3 elder women, 2 women in August. Healing Bridges also provided material support for a few Kofanes facing illneses and/or injuries. Healing Bridges continued to pursue remedial action for the multiple failings of the Colombian Government to protect the Kofan people through the Inter American System of Human Rights, enlisting one of the top Colombian human rights lawyers and exchanging translation services for his legal services, who along with his son prepared Healing Bridges response to the Colombian State in the case Healing Bridges filed in 2013. Healing Bridges worked with Amazon Watch and International Rivers to investigate, raise questions about, and ultimately oppose a destructive USAID activity called the "Amazon Best Management Practices." Alerted a Siona indigenous delegation visiting NYC, hosted them and Amazon Frontlines in DC, set up a meeting with a Member of Congress, participated in other Congressional meetings set up by Amazon Watch, produced various memos for Congress, assisted events about oil in Latin America, engaged USAID's annual Colombia human rights consultation, briefed Colombia-focused US NGOs, Colombian civil society organizations, and joined Amazon Watch in a key USAID meeting that led to the termination of the program.$0$13,571
Production of audiovisual products about traditional communities and beliefs. Healing Bridges produced a 30-minute Kofan-language-only video that spanned 14 years of original tape, for the annual assembly of ASMIK (Asociación U'fama Kwipa Ateswndekhw A'indekhw, ASMIK, the only association of Kofan traditional authorities (shamans) in Colombia). The President of ASMIK chose the images and led the editing. Healing Bridges later produced two short video updates for its supporters. Healing Bridges taped half an hour of B-roll videotape in Iyu Ande and 45 minutes audio of music played in after-ritual setting.$0$12,913
Bridging the gap between traditional communities and the modern world to ensure mutual benefit. Healing Bridges continued its educational outreach engaging staff of Georgetown University's Center for Latin American Studies and the Smithsonian Institution, the Center for Investigation and Popular Education (CINEP) and the Catholic Bishops Conference in Colombia, and led seminars at Georgetown University and Blake High School in Maryland. Healing Bridges continued its search for markets for Kofan handicrafts, selling more than $300 of previously purchased traditional handicrafts, generating nearly $50 in new revenue which it put back into the operation. Healing Bridges recognizes the work of the Kofan Traditional Authorities, the elder women, and apprentices, remunerating more than $2,500 for the work of traditional medicine and some $1,700 in local labor.$0$11,103
