Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Healing Bridges works with traditional communities to create audiovisual products about their beliefs, engages in various forms of advocacy and other supporting activities in national and international arenas to protect and strengthen them, and bridge the gap between them and the modern world for mutual benefit. Current focus is with the traditional authorities (shamans) of the Kofan indigenous people in the Colombian Amazon with sporadic engagement with those of the Siona people.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
In January, Healing Bridges gathered 9 Kofan traditional authorities (curacas), 2 elder women, 7 apprentices, and 7 women from 5 territories to share video it is creating for eventual submission to Amazon Watch for support, to discuss some 236 pages of Government documents obtained in 2019, and to accompany a meeting between the curacas and the Santa Rosa tribal government. Healing Bridges also interviewed an elder couple about life before and during the arrival of the Texas Petroleum Company to their territory in the 1960s. In March, Healing Bridges accompanied 5 Kofan traditional authorities, an elder Kofan woman, another Kofan woman, and 7 Kofan apprentices to the Siona indigenous reservation of Buenavista, Putumayo, where they met with the Siona tribal government and 5 Siona curacas. Healing Bridges supported a Kofan documents request in March to the National Land Agency and, when the Agency proved unresponsive, Healing Bridges shared information with the Office of the Inspector General who followed-up in May, resulting in the release of 1.22GB of documents from the National Land Agency in September. Healing Bridges continued its support for ASMIK, the association of Kofan Traditional Authorities, Asociación "U'fama Kwipa Atenswndekhw A'indekhw," Médicos Kofanes de la Sabiduría U'fama, funding its annual obligations to the Colombian State. Healing Bridges also provided $1,107 in western medical support for some Kofan (and one person related to Siona.) Healing Bridges continued to translate El Pacto de Silencio into English in exchange for legal support for its 2013 case before the Inter American System of Human Rights. In response to the closures of commerce due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Healing Bridges provided $1,726 in aid in June-July reaching 31 families in 4 Kofan territories, and $2,246 in aid in November reaching 35 families in 5 Kofan territories. Also, Healing Bridges embarked on a Food Security project, Ingi bupa semanba humbachuha mendevi, thanks to the support of Honor the Earth. In 2020, $5,833 supported 10 families as they began or expanded aviculture, aquaculture, and/or planting fields with corn and plantain, among other crops. Healing Bridges recognizes the work of the Kofan Traditional Authorities, the elder women, and apprentices, remunerating some $1,950.00 for the work of traditional medicine and some $1,850 in local labor.$0$21,802
Healing Bridges videotaped 2.83 hours in the Kofan reservation Santa Rosa del Guamuéz, including an interview with an elder couple, discussions with the Kofan Traditional Authorities, and their meeting with the Santa Rosa tribal government. Healing Bridges videotaped 4.74 hours in Buenavista, Siona reservation, an encounter between Kofan and Siona traditional authorities. A volunteer produced an introductory video about Healing Bridges, and Healing Bridges produced four video updates. Healing Bridges began translating and transcribing the meeting with the tribal government.$0$12,645
Healing Bridges continued its educational outreach, leading a seminar for Colombia's Universidad Nacional's Film and Television Department, presenting before the Ignatian Solidarity Network's annual "Family Teach-In for Justice," and providing background information about the Kofan struggle to the staff of Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, for a hearing on indigenous rights in the Americas. The Director of Healing Bridges was also interviewed by Bogota's Encuentro Radio "Ecoteología" program in February. In December, Healing Bridges conducted 12 zoom year-end briefings, reaching 104 individuals in three countries, 19 states, and Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia. Healing Bridges continued its search for markets for Kofan handicrafts and a volunteer developed an e-commerce mock-up on square.com.$0$10,254
