Healing Bridges works with traditional communities to create audiovisual products about their beliefs, engages in various forms of advocacy and other supporting activities in national and international arenas to protect and strengthen them, and bridge the gap between them and the modern world for mutual benefit. Current focus is with the traditional authorities (shamans) of the Kofan indigenous people in the Colombian Amazon with sporadic engagement with those of the Siona people.
Working with traditional communities to assist defense of territory, uphold autonomy and culture, and seek to restore lands.

| Healing Bridges was created to produce audiovisual products about traditional communities and beliefs. In conjunction with advocacy and public outreach, it seeks to strengthen traditional communities and to bridge the gap between them and the modern world for mutual benefit. We are currently focused on stopping the cultural extinction of the Kofan indigenous people in Colombia. The Kofan Traditional Authorities, the curacas (shamans) and their traditional medicine are the center of Kofan culture, are the key to their renaissance, and have priceless contributions to offer the modern world. And yet, with the commission and the omission of the Colombian Government, the Traditional Authorities are systematically sidelined, just about ensuring the cultural extinction of the Kofan people. To reverse the extinction, Healing Bridges works with the Kofan curacas to put pressure on the Colombian Government so that it will restore Kofan territorial boundaries to those it recognized in the 70s and ensure that the Kofan can reclaim cultural sovereignty in their reservations. The geographic focus is the Kofan reserve and reservation of Santa Rosa del Guamuéz in Putumayo Department in southwestern Colombia. Healing Bridges develops its goals and strategy by gathering the Kofan curacas of five territories, exchanging information in both western and ceremonial settings, and then translating the curacas' desires into targeted petitions to the Colombian Government. Healing Bridges then engages outside actors such as the United Nations, the Inter American Commission on Human Rights, and the U.S. Government so that the petitions are respected. Our work in 2018 was centered on advancing our specific denunciations before the Office of the Inspector General (Procuraduría General de la Nación). These efforts culminated in a June and an October meeting in the Colombian capital, Bogotá, with said office, for which in both occasions we brought a delegation of Traditional Authorities, grandmothers, and followers of traditional medicine. On the occasion of the October meeting we also had a meeting with the Interior Ministry that was on its face deeply frustrating but began to produce useful documentation. In addition to these two gatherings in Bogotá, we gathered in Santa Rosa in December to review the year's work and look ahead. Since we meet in a reservation that is relatively remote and many of the participants come from even more remote locations, our field expenditures cover their travel (both ground and riverine), the purchase of food to prepare, the hiring of cooks and woodcutter (fuel), honoraria for the ceremonies of traditional indigenous medicine, and honoraria for the coordination of the meetings. We continue to amass a small inventory of traditional handicrafts for eventual fundraising campaigns. Our gatherings in Bogotá involve renting out a small country house. We have also on occasion procured the contract services of a Colombian cameraman and a Colombian lawyer. We signed an agreement for an exchange of services in-kind with the Colectivo de Abogados José Alvear Retrepo, Colombia's premiere human rights law collective, for their accompaniment of our petition pending before the Inter American Commission on the Inter American Commission on Human Rights as the Individual Petition we filed in 2013 was finally activated. | $0 | $56,551 |
