Activity 2

Signature events: from tradeshows to competitions and special programs for students, our signature events are a catalyst for driving business success, recognizing artistic and business excellence, and advancing beauty careers. The international salon & spa expo in long beach was attended by over 40,000 professionals and is ranked #165 by trade show news in the top 250 trade shows in the u.s. In conjuncture with our italian partner, bolognafiere s.p.a., we produce the largest business to business beauty event in the nation: cosmoprof north america. Cosmoprof is attended by over 25,000 and is ranked #112 by trade show news in the top 250 trade shows in the u.s. During cosmprof, pba hosted beauty week, which included educational offerings as well as the 23rd annual north american hairstyling awards. Activity 3

Government affairs: pba advocates for the rights and well-being of every pba member. We actively reach out to law makers to educate and inform them on the importance of the industry to the u.s. Economy, as well as track and respond to state and federal legislation with potential to affect the industry. In 2012, pba established an issue advocacy fund to meaningfully engage in strategies that benefit and advance the industry for positive change. Government affairs' top priority is the small business tax equalization and compliance act (h.r. 1957) that would provide tax equality for the salon industry by extending the 45(b) fica tax credit to salon owners, a credit that is currently only available to restaurant owners, while increasing tax compliance (continued on sch o.)and encouraging honest income reporting. In addition, nearly a dozen states have considered legislation to deregulate or detrimentally alter state licensing and regulation. In 2012, we implemented a state tracking program and send issue advocacy alerts to engage professionals in that area. Nearly 21,000 letters were sent in 2012 through our take action now center to state officials in response to this legislation.
