| IRS990/Description | 0 | Learning Ally, Inc. (LA) provides services for individuals with print-related disabilities. According to the findings of the CDCs 2011 National Health Interview Survey, about nine percent of the current U.S. adult population, or 21.5 million individuals ages 18 and older, have difficulty seeing even with glasses or contacts. In addition, the 2011 American Community Survey (ACS) reports that there are approximately 518,382 children in the U.S. experiencing vision difficulty. There is only a 45 percent high school graduation rate for students who are blind and visually impaired, and a greater than 70 percent rate of unemployment among working age adults with blindness and visual impairments. Furthermore, less than 10 percent of this population is fluent in Braille, making audio accommodation an indispensable link to the written word. LAs products and services help break down barriers to learning for our members with learning disabilities, especially dyslexia. Research indicates that as much as 20 percent of the U.S. population may have dyslexia, hampering their ability to become quick, accurate, fluent readers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approximately 2.5 million K-12 students have been formally diagnosed with a reading-based learning disability. LA has long been one of the leading providers of audiobooks, including the worlds largest library of audio textbooks. LAs more than 5,500 dedicated volunteers record the printed word into audiobooks enabling more than 300,000 students to learn more effectively. In addition, LA has expanded to become a critical resource to not only students in need, but also to their support network, offering a suite of services to parents (Parent Ally), educators (Teacher Ally), students, and volunteers including workshops, seminars, webcasts, and professional development. LA audiobooks and other products help students with learning disabilities become confident, independent learners. When used with text, audio reinforces comprehension, increases word recognition, builds vocabulary, and boosts reading rate. For example, according to a self-funded study, students with print disabilities who have access to audiobooks significantly outperformed their peers in math tests. Focusing on 2010 and 2011 Adequate Yearly Progress data, the study compared scores for every school in a state to the overall state average. In 13 out of 13 comparisons across six states in 2010, and 12 out of 13 comparisons across six states in 2011, schools using LA had more students who scored as "Proficient" or "Advanced Proficient" in math. While LA cannot claim total credit for these student outcomes, these correlational findings indicate that LAs products and services are clearly an influential part of a system that works. Leveraging its audiobook success, LA launched a number of initiatives to ensure that students with print-related disabilities have access to the support and tools that will enable personal achievement. These initiatives include both significant enhancements to existing services as well as the introduction of new ones. To more holistically support our members, LA is focusing its efforts on five interconnected areas: *Improved Student Tools & Support Developing tools and training to build student confidence and resilience in order to foster success; *Parent Engagement & Support Expanding LAs position as a resource for parents and "champions," as well as the broader community; *School Support & Teacher Professional Development Enhancing LA's position as a resource for schools and teachers; *Product Content and Delivery Enhancing and increasing annual book production with improved product navigation features and providing more efficient delivery through technological innovation; and *Public Awareness Increasing public awareness about dyslexia through a multi-pronged public service campaign and the development of an interactive, stand-alone website.
