Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Sustainable conservation helps california thrive by uniting people to solve the toughest challenges facing our land, air and water. Every day, we bring together business, landowners and government to steward the resources that we all depend on in ways that make economic sense. Because we know that common ground is california's most important resource.

Sustainable conservation (the organization) partners with business, agriculture, and government to find practical ways the private sector can protect air and water, as well as ensure healthy ecosystems. The organization's work spans rural and urban environmental issues, ranging from improving water quality in dairy farming, to promoting the growing and selling of non-invasive plants in california's horticultural industry, to partnering with farmers in california's san joaquin valley on sustainable-groundwater solutions. The organization works with farmers to identify ways they can protect the environment, improve their bottom lines, and keep their land in production. It also works to overcome the time, complexity, and cost associated with voluntary habitat restoration on private land. Finally, the organization works with businesses and government agencies to ensure a more sustainable water supply for the state.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

The organization did not have a committee with authority to act on behalf of the governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

A draft of form 990 is sent to all members of the governing body and reviewed by management and the audit committee of the board of directors prior to filing. The committee meets with management and the tax preparer as necessary to review the form 990, related schedules and supporting documentation. If changes to the form are requested, a revised copy is reviewed by management and sent to the committee. The committee approves the filing and makes a recommendation to the full board to ratify the filing at the next board meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization requests all board members to sign a conflict of interest statement once a year.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The governance committee is composed entirely of people that have no conflict of interest with sustainable conservation, its officers or its compensation arrangements. It is responsible for conducting the performance and compensation review of the executive director. The performance review process includes a self review by the executive director, discussion with the committee and a discussion amongst the committee then by the board. A written performance review is included in the personnel file of the executive director. The committee also reviews compensation information of comparable positions at environmental organization of similar sizes in the bay area and makes a compensation recommendation to the full board. The full board then discusses the recommendation and decides on the compensation annually and a record is put in the executive director's personnel file. Chief executive officer last compensation review was in 2015.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public upon request.

IRS990/Desc0DAIRIES: WE WORK WITH CALIFORNIA DAIRY PRODUCERS TO PROMOTE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES THAT ARE MORE PROTECTIVE OF WATER AND AIR QUALITY AND WORK ECONOMICALLY. IN 2015, WE PILOTED AN INNOVATIVE LIQUID MANURE DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM THAT APPLIES NUTRIENTS MORE PRECISELY TO CROP ROOT ZONES, WHICH IN TURN LEADS TO SIGNIFICANTLY LESS NITROGEN LEACHING INTO GROUNDWATER SUPPLIES. WE ALSO BEGAN A FEASIBILITY STUDY ON A MARKET FOR COMPOSTED DAIRY MANURE TO BE USED AS A VALUABLE SOIL AMENDMENT FOR OTHER FARMING CROPS. TO IMPROVE AIR QUALITY IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY, WE PROMOTED LOW-INTENSITY CULTIVATION PRACTICES, OR "CONSERVATION TILLAGE", TO REDUCE DUST AND DIESEL EMISSIONS FROM TRACTORS. WE ESTABLISHED A CONSERVATION TILLAGE EQUIPMENT RENTAL PROGRAM THROUGH WHICH 11 FARMERS ON 2,145 ACRES HAVE IMPLEMENTED THE PRACTICE TO DATE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0WATER: WATER IS IN SHORT SUPPLY IN CALIFORNIA. SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION EVALUATES NEW WATER MANAGEMENT APPROACHES SO FARMS, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND COMMUNITIES HAVE THE WATER THEY NEED FOR YEARS TO COME. WE WORK IN THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY TO EVALUATE AND PROMOTE THE CAPTURE OF STORM WATER FLOOD FLOWS ON ACTIVE FARMLAND TO REPLENISH GROUNDWATER AQUIFERS, CALIFORNIA'S MOST IMPORTANT DROUGHT RESERVE. AS A RESULT OF OUR EXTENSIVE OUTREACH, 23 GROWERS HAVE OFFERED 130 DEMONSTRATION SITES, REPRESENTING 10 DIFFERENT CROPS AND ALMOST 15,000 ACRES, ALLOWING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO COLLECT MONITORING DATA TO FURTHER PROVE THIS APPROACH AND LAY THE GROUNDWORK TO BRING THIS STRATEGY TO SCALE WHEN SIGNIFICANT FLOOD FLOWS RETURN TO CALIFORNIA.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0ACCELERATING RESTORATION: SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION MAKES IT EASIER FOR LANDOWNERS TO STEWARD NATURAL RESOURCES. WE WORK WITH THE LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO SIMPLIFY THE PERMITTING PROCESS SO LANDOWNERS CAN COMPLETE PROJECTS THAT RESTORE STREAM, REBUILD HABITAT, AND REDUCE SOIL EROSION IN A FEW MONTHS RATHER THAN A FEW YEARS. IN 2015, WE WORKED WITH NOAA FISHERIES TO ISSUE A FORMAL SOUTH COAST PROGRAMMATIC BIOLOGICAL OPINION TO MATCH THE PROGRAMMATIC BIOLOGICAL OPINION IN PLACE FOR THE CENTRAL AND NORTH COASTS - COVERING THE ENTIRE CALIFORNIA COAST WITH SIMPLIFIED PERMITTING BY THIS AGENCY.
