Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Sustainable conservation helps california thrive by uniting people to solve the toughest challenges facing our land, air and water. Every day, we bring together business, landowners and government to steward the resources that we all depend on in ways that make economic sense. Because we know that common ground is california's most important resource.

Sustainable conservation (the organization) partners with business, agriculture, and government to find practical ways that the private sector can protect air and water, and ensure healthy ecosystems through collaboration and producing solutions to critical environmental problems. The organization's work has spanned rural and urban environmental issues, ranging from improving water quality in dairy farming, to promoting the growing and selling of non-invasive plants in california's horticultural industry. The organization works with farmers to identify ways that producers can protect the environment, improve their bottom lines, and keep their land in production. The organization also works to overcome the time, complexity, and cost associated with voluntary habitat restoration projects on private land. Lastly, the organization works with businesses and regulatory agencies to insure a more sustainable water supply for agriculture and communities.

Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section A, Line 8B

The organization did not have a committee with authority to act on behalf of the governing body.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

A draft of form 990 is reviewed by management and the audit committee of the board of directors prior to filing. The committee meets with management and the tax preparer as necessary to review the form 990, related schedules and supporting documentation. If changes to the form are requested, a revised copy is reviewed by management and sent to the committee. The committee approves the filing and makes a recommendation to the full board to adopt the filing at the next board meeting.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

The organization requests all board members to sign a conflict of interest statement once a year.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15A

The governance committee is composed entirely of people that have no conflict of interest with sustainable conservation, its officers or its compensation arrangements. It is responsible for conducting the performance and compensation review of the executive director. The performance review process includes a self review by the executive director, discussion with the committee and a discussion amongst the committee then by the board. A written performance review is included in the personnel file of the executive director. The committee also reviews compensation information of comparable positions at environmental organization of similar sizes in the bay area and makes a compensation recommendation to the full board. The full board then discusses the recommendation and decides on the compensation annually and a record is put in the executive director's personnel file. Chief executive officer last compensation review was in 2014.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The organization's governing documents, conflict of interest policy and financial statements are available to the public upon request.

STARTING ON FEWER THAN 100 ACRES IN 2003, WE AND OUR PARTNERS HAVE HELPED CALIFORNIA CORN SILAGE FARMERS MAKE THE SWITCH TO LESS INTENSIVE METHODS FOR GROWING FOOD ON OVER 180,000 ACRES ACROSS NINE COUNTIES. WE ALSO WORKED WITH DAIRIES TO PROMOTE MANURE MANGEMENT PRACTICES THAT KEEP VITAL SOURCES OF DRINKING WATER CLEAN WHILE ENSURING THE LONG-TERM VIABILITY OF THE INDUSTRY. FOR EXAMPLE, WE PARTNERED WITH BIOFILTRO, AN INTERNATIONAL COMPANY WITH A SUBSIDIARY IN FRESNO, CA, TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR WORM-BASED WASTEWATER TREATMENT TECHNOLOGY ON A DAIRY. AT FANELLI DAIRY - THE FIRST COMMERCIAL-SCALE HOST SITE IN THE U.S. - WE'RE TESTING HOW THE SYSTEM COULD HELP SAFEGUARD LOCAL GROUNDWATER AND DRINKING WATER FROM NITROGEN POLLUTION FROM COW MANURE.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0SIMPLIFIED PERMITTING FOR RESTORATION:SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION MAKES IT EASIER FOR LANDOWNERS TO STEWARD NATURAL RESOURCES. WE WORK WITH THE LEGISLATURE AND GOVERNMENT AGENCIES TO SIMPLIFY THE PERMITTING PROCESS SO LANDOWNERS CAN COMPLETE PROJECTS THAT RESTORE STREAMS, REBUILD HABITAT, AND REDUCE SOIL EROSION IN A FEW MONTHS RATHER THAN A FEW YEARS. IN 2014, WE ACHIEVED LANDMARK LEGISLATION WITH THE PASSAGE OF AB 2193 - THE HABITAT RESTORATION AND ENHANCEMENT ACT - WHICH WAS SPONSORED AND CHAMPIONED BY SUSTAINABLE CONSERVATION. THIS CREATED AN ALTERNATIVE, EXPEDITED REVIEW PROCESS FOR SMALL SCALE RESTORATION PROJECTS WITH CA DEPT. OF FISH AND WILDLIFE. WE ALSO MADE GREAT PROGRESS WITH NOAA FISHERIES STAFF TO EXTEND SIMPLIFIED PERMITTING FROM THE NORTH AND CENTRAL COASTS OF CALIFORNIA TO THE SOUTH COAST. THESE EFFORTS HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO ACCELERATE HUNDREDS OF SMALL-SCALE PROJECTS THAT WILL PROVIDE CRITICALLY NEEDED HABITAT FOR THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0PLANTRIGHT:PLANTRIGHT PARTNERS WITH PLANT GROWERS AND RETAILERS, PROFESSIONAL GARDENERS, AND OTHERS TO STOP THE SALE OF INVASIVE PLANTS AND PROMOTE BETTER OPTIONS. OUR 2014 ANNUAL SURVEY INDICATED THAT THE PERCENTAGE OF NURSERIES CARRYING AN INVASIVE PLANT ON PLANTRIGHT'S ORIGINAL LIST (COHORT 1) DECREASED FROM AROUND 30% OVER THE PAST THREE YEARS TO 18% IN 2014. IN 2014, WE FORMALLY SIGNED THE HOME DEPOT TO PLANTRIGHT'S RETAIL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM. GIVEN THAT BIG BOX STORES REPRESENT 70% OF RETAIL PLANT SALES IN CA, THIS WILL HELP US FURTHER REDUCE THE NUMBER OF STORES THAT CARRY INVASIVE PLANTS. WE ALSO TOOK A GIANT STEP TOWARD PREVENTING NEW PLANT INVASIONS. IN 2014, OUR SCREENING TOOL WAS PUBLISHED IN AN INTERNATIONAL, PEER-REVIEWED AND OPEN-ACCESS ONLINE PUBLICATION - PLOS ONE - WHICH GAVE OUR TOOL THE SCIENTIFIC VALIDATION IT NEEDS TO BE USED BY SCIENTISTS AND INDUSTRY TO DETERMINE A PLANT'S POTENTIAL FOR INVASIVENESS BEFORE BRINGING IT TO MARKET. FEWER INVASIVE PLANTS MEAN NATIVE PLANTS AND WILDLIFE CAN FLOURISH, AND OUR WILDFIRE RISK IS REDUCED.
