Known for its core values of storytelling, rigor, innovation, equity, discovery, and sustainability, berkeley rep draws theatre artists from around the country and the world to produce an annual seven-play season and up to four additional special event presentations that invite audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.
The theatre produces premiers of new work and major productions from an international repertoire.

“The theatre is a qualified organization exempt from federal income and california franchise taxes under the provisions of sections 501(c)(3) of the internal revenue code and 23701(d) of the california revenue and taxation code, respectively. The theatre evaluates its tax positions taken or expected to be taken to determine whether the tax positions are "more-likely-than-not" of being sustained by the applicable tax authority. Tax positions not deemed to meet the "more-likely-than-not" threshold are recorded as an expense in the applicable year. As of august 31, 2020, the theatre does not have any significant uncertain tax positions for which a reserve would be necessary. The theatre files united states of america ("u.s.") federal, and u.s. State tax returns. For u.s. State tax returns, the theatre is generally no longer subject to tax examinations for years prior to 2014. For u.s. Federal tax returns, the theatre is no longer subject to tax examination for years prior to 2015.”

NEXT UP WAS THE WORLD PREMIERE OF SARAH RUHL'S BECKY NURSE OF SALEM. SARAH'S PLAY WAS YET ANOTHER PRODUCTION BORN OUT OF THE GROUND FLOOR BERKELEY REP'S CENTER FOR THE CREATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF NEW WORK, AND WHICH HAD FURTHER DEVELOPMENT SUPPORT FROM NEW YORK STAGE AND FILM & VASSAR'S 2019 POWERHOUSE SEASON. BERKELEY REP ALSO PRESENTED CULTURE CLASH (STILL) IN AMERICA, A SUBVERSIVE PIECE OF DOCUMENTARY THEATRE DIRECTED BY LONG-TIME BERKELEY REP COLLABORATOR LISA PETERSON AND CREATED BY BAY AREA-BORN AND LOS ANGELES-BASED ENSEMBLE CULTURE CLASH. WHEN CALIFORNIA'S SHELTER IN PLACE ORDERS WENT INTO EFFECT ON MARCH 17, 2020, CULTURE CLASH (STILL) IN AMERICA WAS PLAYING IN THE PEET'S THEATRE AND JOCELYN BIOH'S FUNNY, BITING SCHOOL GIRLS; OR, THE AFRICAN MEAN GIRLS PLAY WAS REHEARSING TO OPEN IN THE RODA THEATRE. THANKS TO A RAPIDLY NEGOTIATED AGREEMENT WITH THE THEATRICAL UNIONS AND A PARTNERSHIP WITH STREAMING SERVICE BROADWAYHD, BERKELEY REP WAS ABLE TO OFFER STREAMED RECORDINGS OF CULTURE CLASH AND SCHOOL GIRLS TO TICKET HOLDERS AND SCHOOLS THAT HAD BOOKED STUDENT MATINEES FOR THESE TWO PRODUCTIONS. SADLY, HAPPY DAYS DIRECTED BY JAMES BUNDY AND STARRING ACADEMY AWARD WINNER DIANNE WIEST, HAD TO BE CANCELLED. THE WORLD PREMIERE OF SWEPT AWAY WITH MUSIC BY THE AVETT BROTHERS, BOOK BY JOHN LOGAN, AND DIRECTED BY MICHAEL MAYER WAS TO BRING THE SEASON TO A CLOSE. THIS PRODUCTION REMAINS A HIGH PRIORITY FOR US AND IS NOW SLATED TO APPEAR IN OUR UPCOMING SEASON, ONCE PRODUCTION RESUMES.
