Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Please see schedule o for the complete mission statement.berkeley repertory theatre creates ambitious theatre that entertains and challenges its audiences, provokes civic engagement, and inspires people to experience the world in new and surprising ways. Known for its core values of storytelling, rigor, innovation, equity, discovery, and sustainability, berkeley rep draws theatre artists from around the country and the world to produce an annual seven-play season and up to four additional special event presentations that invite audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The berkeley rep school of theatre provides comprehensive arts experiences for students throughout the bay area each year. Through onsite classes and scholarships, student matinees, and free and deeply discounted arts education in-classroom residencies, berkeley rep ensures broad access to some of the bay area's finest teaching artists and productions. The berkeley rep school of theatre's outreach programs reinforce california state board of education content standards in the fields of english, language arts, history-social science, mathematics, physical education, and visual and performing arts.over the fiscal year, the berkeley rep school of theatre served 21,277 students through in-classroom programming, onsite classes, student matinees, teen night events, and the teen one acts. Our in-classroom programs for local schools and community centers in nine bay area counties provided 28,007 contact hours--over 50 percent of which were to title 1-funded schools. The school also offered 78 scholarships for its onsite programs totaling nearly $30,000 in program services. Over 250 bay area teens took part in nearly 6,000 contact hours of art and leadership training through the free teen council. Fourteen theatres across the country have instituted programs modeled on berkeley rep's teen council.
Activity 3
Berkeley rep also has the opportunity to offer special-event presentations to our audiences. Last year's hit wild bride returned for an encore performance at the beginning of the new year before it enjoyed a run off broadway at st. Anne's warehouse. And over the summer we introduced a new artist to bay area audiences: the award-winning hershey felder in his smash hit, george gershwin alone. The master entertainer and piano prodigy wowed audiences and critics alike, enjoyed extended performances, became a new audience favorite, and smashed box office records. At other times, berkeley rep opens its doors to organizations and individuals from the community for a wide range of events. In addition to our downtown campus, we also offered three new studios in the berkeley central building in downtown berkeley. With a 20-year lease on this 13,000-square-foot facility, berkeley rep is providing the studios at a subsidized rate to local nonprofits that do not have permanent homes of their own, such as the bay area children's theatre and ragged wing ensemble. Other organizations that annually use our main theatres include lawrence berkeley national labs, the jewish film festival, and the berkeley fire department, which holds its annual badge ceremony in berkeley reps theatre and courtyard. We are proud to forge partnerships with fellow nonprofits to continue transforming downtown into a destination for theatre lovers.

LOCAL MEDIA CELEBRATED BERKELEY REP'S SHOWS WITH SEVERAL FRONT-PAGE STORIES AND SEVERAL PRODUCTIONS ATTRACTED THE ATTENTION OF CRITICS FROM LOS ANGELES AND NEW YORK.BERKELEY REP HAD AN AUSPICIOUS START TO ITS 2012-13 SEASON WITH THE WEST COAST PREMIERE OF DAVID HENRY HWANG'S CHINGLISH, A COMEDY ABOUT AN AMERICAN BUSINESSMAN WHO BECOMES LOST IN TRANSLATION WHEN HE VISITS CHINA TO EARN A LUCRATIVE CONTRACT FOR HIS FAMILY BUSINESS. CHINGLISH EARNED STELLAR REVIEWS, BECAME AN AUDIENCE FAVORITE, ENJOYED TWO EXTENSIONS--AND A FEW MONTHS LATER (AFTER A SECOND RUN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA) BERKELEY REP'S PRODUCTION OF CHINGLISH PLAYED TO SOLD-OUT HOUSES AT THE 1,600-SEAT THEATRE AT THE HONG KONG ARTS FESTIVAL, MARKING THE COMPANY'S FIRST SHOW TO TOUR TO ASIA.IN JANUARY, BERKELEY REP WAS PROUD TO PREMIERE DAN LEFRANC'S TROUBLEMAKER, OR THE KICK-A ADVENTURES OF BRADLEY BOATRIGHT, THE FIRST PLAY COMMISSIONED AS PART OF THE THEATRE'S NEWLY LAUNCHED GROUND FLOOR NEW PLAYS PROGRAM. FOLLOWING A RIGOROUS SERIES OF WORKSHOPS IN SUMMER 2012, THIS PLAY ABOUT A 12-YEAR-OLD BOY WHO FANCIES HIMSELF A SUPERHERO TO COPE WITH HIS PARENTS DIVORCE EARNED GOOD REVIEWS AND ATTRACTED A YOUNGER AUDIENCE--AND BECAME A FAVORITE SHOW OF THE THEATRE'S STUDENT-MATINEE CROWD. BERKELEY REP ALSO PRESENTED TWO OTHER WORLD PREMIERES. DURING THE HOLIDAYS, TONY AWARD-WINNING DIRECTOR MARY ZIMMERMAN RETURNED TO THE THEATRE WITH HER NEW WORK THE WHITE SNAKE, A CLASSIC ROMANCE FROM CHINESE LEGEND AND ANOTHER SHOW THAT RECEIVED AN EXTENSION. SOON AFTER, BERKELEY REP WELCOMED PULITZER PRIZE WINNER LAWRENCE WRIGHT--WHO HAD JUST PUBLISHED THE BESTSELLING GOING CLEAR: SCIENTOLOGY, HOLLYWOOD, AND THE PRISON OF BELIEF--AND HIS NEW PLAY FALLACI, A COMPELLING LOOK AT THE COMPLICATED LIFE AND POLITICS OF FAMED ITALIAN JOURNALIST ORIANA FALLACI. DRAWING POLITICAL DIGNITARIES AND PLENTY OF PRESS AND STARRING CONCETTA TOMEI, THE PLAY WAS DIRECTED BY OBIE AWARD WINNER OSKAR EUSTIS. FALLACI WAS BERKELEY REP'S 65TH WORLD PREMIERE.DEAR ELIZABETH MARKED BERKELEY REP'S SECOND WEST COAST PREMIERE OF THE SEASON AND REUNITED THE WINNING TEAM OF PLAYWRIGHT SARAH RUHL AND DIRECTOR LES WATERS, WHO ALSO COLLABORATED ON THE THEATRE'S PAST PRODUCTIONS OF EURYDICE, THREE SISTERS, AND IN THE NEXT ROOM (OR THE VIBRATOR PLAY). DEAR ELIZABETH FOLLOWS THE BEAUTIFUL AND BITTERSWEET FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN ELIZABETH BISHOP AND ROBERT LOWELL. ROUNDING OUT THE SUBSCRIPTION SEASON WERE TWO REWORKINGS OF CLASSIC STORIES: AN ILIAD AND PERICLES, PRINCE OF TYRE. WITH A SCRIPT BY LISA PETERSON AND DENIS OHARE (OF TRUE BLOOD FAME), AN ILIAD STARRED VETERAN SHAKESPEAREAN ACTOR HENRY WORONICZ, WHO LEAD THE POPULAR SHOW INTO AN EXTENSION.
