Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Please see schedule o for the complete mission statement.berkeley repertory theatre creates ambitious theatre that entertains and challenges its audiences, provokes civic engagement, and inspires people to experience the world in new and surprising ways. Known for its core values of storytelling, rigor, innovation, equity, discovery, and sustainability, berkeley rep draws theatre artists from around the country and the world to produce an annual seven-play season and up to four additional special event presentations that invite audiences to enjoy an eclectic range of theatrical experiences featuring diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.

Major Activities

Activity 2
At the berkeley rep school of theatre, artists of all ages and abilities are offered the opportunity to experience the craft and artistry of theatre and to actively engage with their own creativity while making meaningful connections. The only requirement is an active mind open to imagination, collaboration, hard work, and lots of fun. Twenty-two theatre arts education programs served nearly 23,000 students.the berkeley rep school of theatre is committed to working with local schools to reinforce arts education as a community value and as an integral part of our cultural fabric. Free and low-cost dynamic workshops for elementary, middle, and (continued on schedule o) high schools are offered in all nine bay area counties. Using theatre arts techniques that encourage teamwork and ensemble-building, outreach programs reinforce california state board of education content standards in the fields of english language arts, history-social science, mathematics, physical education, and visual and performing arts.
Activity 3
Berkeley rep also has the opportunity to offer special-event presentations to our audiences. Activist/playwright/performer eve ensler's powerful emotional creature placed girls' stories front and center, highlighting the diversity and the commonality of the issues they face. We gave away 3,000 free tickets for emotional creature to fellow nonprofit organizations and to government agencies that serve key constituencies, including at-risk youth, teens, and young adults of both genders, and abuse victims of all ages, with priority given to groups that serve women and girls. Also a world premiere at berkeley rep that played in june and july, emotional creature enjoyed a subsequent run off broadway. Earlier in the season, we welcomed international dance star (continued on schedule o) mikhail baryshnikov in an adaptation of ivan bunin's in paris. Both of these shows reached an audience well beyond our core group of subscribers and return single-ticket buyers.at other times, berkeley rep opens its doors to organizations and individuals from the community for a wide range of events. This year, we were able to expand these opportunities when we opened three new studios in the berkeley central building in downtown berkeley. With a 20-year lease on this 13,000-square-foot facility, berkeley rep is providing the studios at a subsidized rate to local nonprofits that do not have permanent homes of their own, such as the bay area children's theatre and ragged wing ensemble. Other organizations that annually use our main theatres include lawrence berkeley national labs, the jewish film festival, and the berkeley fire department, which holds its annual badge ceremony in berkeley rep's theatre and courtyard. We are proud to forge partnerships with fellow nonprofits to continue transforming downtown into a destination for theatre lovers.
