Activity 2

At the Berkeley Rep School of Theatre, artists of all ages and abilities are offered the opportunity to experience the craft and artistry of theatre and to actively engage with their own creativity while making meaningful connections. The only requirement is an active mind open to imagination, collaboration, hard work, and lots of fun. Eighteen theatre arts education programs served nearly 23,000 students. The Berkeley Rep School of Theatre is committed to working with local schools to reinforce arts education as a community value and as an integral part of our cultural fabric. Free and low-cost dynamic workshops for elementary, middle, and high schools are offered in all nine Bay Area counties. Using theatre arts techniques that encourage teamwork and ensemble-building, outreach programs reinforce California State Board of Education content standards in the fields of English language arts, history-social science, mathematics, physical education, and visual and performing arts.

Activity 3

In the summer when our mainstage season is dark, Berkeley Rep has the opportunity to develop work in our theatre spaces and to offer more experimental special event performances to our audience. Continuing our interests in developing new work, nurturing new artists and creating professional development opportunities for our fellows, Berkeley Rep hosted a summer new works festival. The 2010 Fireworks Festival was held in June and July and was produced by our graduating artistic fellow. This years festival focused on developing and presenting the work of local solo artists Dan Hoyle and Wes Nisker, and also featured workshops and performances by the nationally known artists David Sedaris and John Leguizamo, who has now taken that show to Broadway.At other times, Berkeley Rep opens its doors to organizations and individuals from the community for a wide range of events. Various facilities and spaces are available to accommodate events of all sizes and types, and non-profit rates are available for qualifying community organizations. Berkeley Rep provided facilities to playwrights, lecturers from Lawrence Berkeley National Labs, Berkeley High School teachers, Theatre Bay Area and Theatre Communication Group conference, schools for benefits featuring interviews with well-known authors, dance and other performance events. Each year Berkeley Rep has been one of the venues for the Jewish Film Festival. The Berkeley Fire Department holds its annual badge ceremony in Berkeley Reps theatre and courtyard.
