Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Home resource works with, in, and for the community to reduce waste and build a more vibrant and sustainable local economy. We collect and sell reusable materials, channel materials to those in need, provide meaningful work opportunities, and educate & inspire to promote a sustainable future.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Education: hri launched a major new initiative called the revamp program - an acronym for renewed, value-added missoula products. Revamp empowers people to transform materials and themselves. The program offers training and workshop time to community members who need to reinvent their employable skills, update their home affordably or create marketable products. Home resource constructed and equipped the shop with the help of two grants - one for nearly $79,760 from the city of missoula's community development block grant program, and one for $16,156 from the department of environmental quality. Construction was completed in september 2010, and three aspects of operations commenced at that time: production of value-added products, classes offered in partnership with the missoula county public schools' lifelong learning center, and a public access woodworking program in which community members gain access to the shop to complete personal projects. All class and membership fees are offered on a sliding fee scale. In the first four months of operations, the shop was able to:1. Transform more than 9,000 pounds of waste materials into valuable, local products.2. Hire three previously unemployed workers in the shop - including one individual who was homeless in january.3. Provide more than 200 hours of professionally-equipped shop time to 31 members who have been able to work their way out of economic trouble, gain marketable skills, or make much-needed improvements to their homes.4. Teach more than 230 students skills ranging from basic tool safety to finish carpentry, cabinet making and furniture building. 5. Offer shop benefits to 20 people who meet federal standards for economic assistance.
Activity 3
Work programs: in addition to the revamp program, hri continued to work with missoula correctional services, experienceworks, sentinel high school, the college of technology and other agencies to provide job training and work experience for individuals in missoula and surrounding areas. (see attached detailed report, "home resource volunteer and work program coordination" in schedule o.) in sum, 65 individuals received training and experience through these partnerships.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0WORK PROGRAMS: IN ADDITION TO THE REVAMP PROGRAM, HRI CONTINUED TO WORK WITH MISSOULA CORRECTIONAL SERVICES, EXPERIENCEWORKS, SENTINEL HIGH SCHOOL, THE COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY AND OTHER AGENCIES TO PROVIDE JOB TRAINING AND WORK EXPERIENCE FOR INDIVIDUALS IN MISSOULA AND SURROUNDING AREAS. IRS990/ActivityOrMissionDescription0HOME RESOURCE COLLECTS AND SELLS REUSABLE BUILDING MATERIALS TO REDUCE WASTE AND BUILD A VIBRANT AND SUSTAINABLE LOCAL ECONOMY. WE CHANNEL USED BUILDING MATERIALS TO THOSE IN NEED AND EDUCATE THE BROADER COMMUNITY ABOUT REUSE.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description0CHARITABLE PROGRAMMING: HOME RESOURCE CONTINUES TO OPERATE ITS MATERIALS GIVING PROGRAM, IN WHICH NON-PROFIT AND THOSE IN NEED CAN APPLY FOR FREE OR HEAVILY DISCOUNTED MATERIALS. CURRENTLY 148 PARTICIPATING ORGANIZATIONS ARE REGISTERED IN THE PROGRAM. OF THOSE, AT LEAST 35 RECEIVED FREE OR DISCOUNTED MATERIALS TOTALING MORE THAN $5,000 IN 2010. IF THESE MATERIALS HAD BEEN PURCHASED NEW, THEY WOULD HAVE COST THESE ORGANIZATIONS AND INDIVIDUALS MORE THAN $20,000. FOR MANY, THE COST OF NEW MATERIALS WOULD HAVE MADE THEIR PROJECTS IMPOSSIBLE.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description1RECYCLING IN THE SCHOOLS: HOME RESOURCE CONTINUED TO SERVE AS FISCAL SPONSOR AND A FINANCIAL/LOGISTICAL SUPPORTER OF THIS PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES RECYCLING EDUCATION AND COLLECTION SERVICES IN NEARLY ALL LOCAL SCHOOLS, BENEFITTING AN ESTIMATED 8,000 STUDENTS. IN 2010, 18 SCHOOLS RECEIVED RECYCLING SERVICES AND EIGHT PRESENTATIONS WERE GIVEN ON HOW AND WHY TO RECYCLE.
IRS990/ActivityOther/Description2OUTREACH: HRI PRODUCED BROCHURES, NEWSLETTERS, POSTERS AND ARTICLES EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT BUILDING MATERIALS REUSE AND DECONSTRUCTION - THE CAREFUL DISMANTLING OF BUILDINGS FOR MAXIMUM RE-USE AND RECYCLING. ALSO, ONCE AGAIN HRI HOSTED "SPONTANEOUS CONSTRUCTION A FESTIVAL OF CREATIVE REINVENTION" TO RAISE AWARENESS OF CONSTRUCTION WASTE AND INSPIRE CREATIVE RE-USE OF BUILDING MATERIALS.
