Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Home resource works with, in, and for the community to reduce waste and build a more vibrant and sustainable local economy. We collect and sell reusable materials, channel materials to those in need, provide meaningful work opportunities, and educate & inspire to promote a sustainable future.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Education: revamp program - an acronym for renewed, value-added missoula products. Home resource constructed and equipped a woodworking shop in 2010 with the help of two grants one for nearly $79,760 from the city of missoulas community development block grant program, and one for $16,156 from the department of environmental quality. Construction was completed in september 2010. Revamp is our educational classroom and woodworking shop. We partner with the lifelong learning center to offer a series of home improvement classes focused on using reclaimed materials available at home resource. Additionally, we hosted a pilot project with willard alternative high school to explore the possibility of offering regularly scheduled woodworking classes for area schools lacking industrial arts facilities. Our workshop also allows our staff to perform minor improvements or major reconstruction on donated items. We now have three part-time employees rehabilitating doors, cabinets, and furniture as well as producing new products made from materials languishing in home resource stock. We have had particularly good success with art canvases (smart) made from excess hollow-core doors.in 2011 we hosted 195 students and 33 classes through our adult education programs. Class topics covered electrical, plumbing, drywall, tile, countertops, outdoor decks, door rehabilitation and rehanging, basic and intermediate woodworking, and earth friendly finish options. Our educational program is open to all but is designed to address the particular concerns and financial needs of low-to-moderate income individuals. We offer a sliding scale for enrollment fees and we design our classes to address some of the most common questions we encounter in the store. Fifty-four adult students received financial assistance in 2011. This past year we also launched a partnership with the local college of technology (cot) carpentry program to engage future building professionals in the philosophical and practical aspects of deconstruction and material reuse through site visits and internships.thirty-one low-to-moderate income students participated in our pilot project. The students used local, sustainably harvested wood to build benches for use on school grounds. We are actively seeking funding sources to offer additional courses with willard and other schools at little or no cost to the schools. We believe exposing adolescents to a combination of reuse/ecological concepts and practical skills will better prepare them to pursue new approaches to solve the challenges our society faces.recycling in the schools (rits): home resource continued to serve as fiscal sponsor and a financial/logistical supporter of this program that provides recycling education and collection services in nearly all local schools, benefitting an estimated 8000 students. In 2011, 15 schools received recycling services and eight classroom and school staff presentations were given on how and why to recycle. Outreach: hri produced brochures, newsletters, posters and articles educating the public about building materials reuse and deconstruction - the careful dismantling of buildings for maximum re-use and recycling. Also, once again hri hosted "spontaneous construction a festival of creative reinvention" to raise awareness of construction waste and inspire creative re-use of building materials. During the festival, teams or individuals are given 6 hours to create something out of materials from home resources inventory of used materials. The items are then judged by a panel of local artists and craftsmen and the favored creations are auctioned as a fundraiser for home resource. During the 2011 event 15 teams turned a few hundred pounds of used materials into 15 works of art and utility; everything from a mobile garden cart to a dining table.in 2011 home resource provided educational tours to more than 3 dozen different organizations and schools. The tours are an excellent opportunity for people to learn ho
Activity 3
Work programs: in addition to providing retraining through the revamp shop, hr also provides on-the-job training opportunities to dozens of community members each year through a variety of partnerships. Education and job skills are some of the most critical factors for finding a good job in the missoula area, and lack of an education and/or job skills constitutes a significant barrier to residents finding and maintaining living wages and family supporting employment. These education and job skill factors are highly related to social issues such as high rates of incarceration and homelessness. Home resource serves as a premier internship training site with multiple capabilities in the retail, manufacturing, and construction and demolition sectors. These capacities, combined with a dedicated and thoughtful staff, provide a holistic training environment for individuals with barriers to employment. The internship these individuals will participate in at home resource will provide much needed jobs skills which will lead toward sustainable employment in the future.home resource work program partnerships include: 1. Missoula job service training program : beginning in november of 2011, home resource began partnering with the missoula job service in a pilot program that offers job and skills training to people struggling to find work in missoula.2.department of corrections community service program, partnering since 2010: in fy 2011 our site has utilized 90 participants for a total of 1903 hours.3.experience works program, partnering since 2007: experience works provides adults over 55 with vocational experience and skills to reenter the workforce. In the last 5 years home resource has trained 8 participantstraining . In 2011 home resource trained 4 participants, who have contributed 2520 hours to hr.4.sentinel h.s. Vocational education program, partnering since 2009: this program serves to build effective vocational and social skills for high school participants who have physical and/or mental disabilities. Hri has served 15 individuals over the course of the program. In fy 2011 our site utilized 3 participants for a total of 120 hours.volunteers:there are many layers of sustainability and resourcefulness that hr puts into action. One is the engagement of an active and diverse volunteer base. In 2011, hr worked with 197 total volunteers for a total of 3455 hours. The generosity, creativity, and hard work of hr volunteers is at the heart of what sustainable community looks like. Many of these volunteers have helped us with the day-to-day tasks of unloading, sorting, pricing, and displaying reusable building materials. Other volunteers come to us with specific skill sets which we identify and utilize on art or outreach projects, or on partnership projects like the building of playhouses for the boys and girls club of missoula fundraising auction. All of our volunteers are dedicated to furthering our mission and this dedication has greatly benefited home resource over the years. The efficient functioning of the store and other programs is a direct result of the many hours of time volunteers have given.1. Long term volunteers: home resource has consistently hosted 3-4 long term volunteers that average 2 hours a week of service. In fy 2011 our site utilized an average of 3 participants for a total of 336 hours. 2.university of montana internship services: every year home resource participates in the universitys internship program to provide real world experience for students in a variety of disciplines. IRS990/Description0WASTE REDUCTION AND SUSTAINABLE BUILDING PRACTICES: IN 2011 HOME RESOURCE EDUCATED AND WORKED WITH LOCAL CONTRACTORS, HOME OWNERS, TEACHERS, AND DEVELOPERS TO RECLAIM USED AND SURPLUS BUILDING MATERIALS. THROUGH THE PROCESS OF SHOPPING, DONATING MATERIALS, OBSERVING THE DECONSTRUCTION CREW DISMANTLING STRUCTURES, AND ATTENDING HOME RESOURCE PROMOTIONAL EVENTS AND CLASSES, THE PUBLIC LEARNED OF THE MANY BENEFITS THAT ARE CREATED WHEN THE COMMUNITY REUSES THE MANY MATERIALS ARE PART OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND REMODEL INDUSTRY. DURING 2011 HOME RESOURCE RECEIVED DONATIONS OF BUILDING MATERIALS FROM THE PUBLIC AND OPERATED A DECONSTRUCTION CREW THAT DISMANTLED BUILDINGS. THE MATERIALS RECLAIMED AND DONATED IN 2011 WERE THEN SOLD FOR $523,800. THE TOTAL WEIGHT OF THESE MATERIALS WAS 2184340 POUNDS (ABOUT 1125 TONS). MOST MATERIAL IS SOLD TO THE PUBLIC AT EXTREMELY LOW COST, BUT APPROXIMATELY $8,000 OF MATERIAL WAS DONATED OR PROVIDED AT A REDUCED PRICE TO NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES. MORE THAN 30,000 INDIVIDUALS AND ORGANIZATIONS WERE SERVED BY HOME RESOURCE IN 2011.
