Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: EYAK Preservation Council $139,866 The Community Cold Storage and Kitchen (CCS&K) Proof of Concept pilot project designed a food preservation model that delivers public benefit outcomes in a Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) - certified seafood processing facility to serve subsistence fishers and gatherers to process, freeze, and value-add to their seafood harvests increasing the quality of their traditional foods. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Hydous Project $29,145 Principal photography of a 3D film led by Dr. Erika Woolsey of Hydrous, a nonprofit organization was completed to generate marine stewardship and science understanding for educational purposes featuring Palau's coral reefs. Project partners include the California Academy of Sciences, Stanford University, the Smithsonian, the University of Sydney, and the Museum of Tropical Queensland. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: Cabo Pulmo Mangrove Project $24,857 The Aburto Lab at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography conducted research on mangrove ecosystems that became the cornerstone of protection for mangroves in Cabo Pulmo. Pilot reserach revewaled that there is greater abundance and biomass of fish due to intact mangroves inside a no-take marine park than that of open access areas. Additionally the research revealed an upward shift in species composition and resulting trophic cascades due to this restoration of natural marine community structures. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: First Nations Roots and Relations $16,275 First nations roots and relations finalized design for a comprehensive interdisciplinary series of exhibits about canoe culture with programs that engage the public in critical environmental questions around work in habitat and wetland restoration. Project designers worked with the Exploratorium Science Museum in San Francisco to attain deeper engagement in the history, culture, and ways of indigenous practices. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 10: OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 11: Green Forests Work $37,694Principal photography and editing was completed on a sizzle trailer for Green Forests Work to deliver a presentation to network executives. The American success story of Green Forests Work is featured as they are now set to plant 100,000 acres of trees on formerly coal minded land in 8 US states. The project offers a new narrative on the Appalachian region and for the American people, one of solutions, hope and economic opportunity. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 12: Mission Blue $40,310American Mission Blue met with Palau's Head of State President about protection of the ocean surrounding the pacific island nation that has 22,000 people. Palau is small in terms of landmass, fitting seven times over into the state of Rhode Island but dedicated their exclusive economic zone to span 80% of its territory. Dr. Sylvia Earle shed light on these vital ecosystems and that safeguarding of marine protected areas such as these are a global model for sustainability. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 13: Plastic Pollution Coalition $16,852 The Plastic Pollution Forum, hosted by Heirs to Our Oceans was attended by representatives from 3 local high schools who came together with visiting Heirs from the U.S., business leaders, educators, and elected officials to brainstorm solutions. Dr. Sylvia Earle was a special guest speaker ath the Youth Forum and spoke to students who were able to set benchmarks for ways to reduce plastic pllution that they want to see come to fruition in the next year. One idea was to take a look at each of their own school's plastic footprint and ways to reduce it.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: EYAK Preservation Council $139,866 The Community Cold Storage and Kitchen (CCS&K) Proof of Concept pilot project designed a food preservation model that delivers public benefit outcomes in a Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) - certified seafood processing facility to serve subsistence fishers and gatherers to process, freeze, and value-add to their seafood harvests increasing the quality of their traditional foods.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1Two of the Board members are related by marriage.
